If you decide that you will only go by what men's councils tell you about scripture, and ignore the history of scripture, then you will not listen at all to the book of Enoch, and with that decision that you can make, you are never going to know much of anything about the fallen angel: Satan. He is explained in that book. It is up to you.

The men who hid the deep sea scrolls thought of Enoch as scripture, Jude in the NT book of Jude thought of Enoch as scripture, I think you would be safe to at least consider what it says as being of God. You can't know, but you could consider it as possible.
Out of curiosity, I just bought the Books of Enoch. After reading Job I lost everything. What a painful lesson.

Yes. So is it Satan or a satan?
Satan is the word used dto desccribe him. Just as early names were simply compilations of words to describe attributes in people, i.e. abraham may be said in English Honored Father of the Peoples *Nations(.

Hello all. I was reading the Book of Job and I was reflecting on who/what Satan is. He appears in the story of Job as one of God's angels, seemingly in a trusted position, as God heeds his advice. In the Book of Job he is described as being one of the bənê hāʼĕlōhîm ('sons of God'). Any responses would be much appreciated. God bless you and may we all be led to righteousness.
Satan was a cherub Angel Cherub meaning a hybrid type Angel half human like half beast.. satan had wings and was called Lucifer.. He was part of the throne of God and his wings where a covering over the top of the throne... The sons of God reference in the Book of Job is pointing to Angels of whom Lucifer was one. Who at the time had the freedom to travel from heaven and earth..

Because of his beauty and pride satan thought he could be a God equal to God and he decided to sabotage Gods creation by tempting our first ancestors to take for themselves the knowledge of good and evil using the enticement that once they attained this knowledge they would be like God.. Which is the same thing that tempted satan to rebel against God.. Wanting to be a God like God..

Surely the Book of Enoch is non-canonical, and as such shouldn't be taken seriously, right?
Correct.. It was not included in the Holy Bible for a reason.. Too many people read it as if it is the infallable word of God.. It is Not..

As for Jesus he was not created by God in 0 BC .. Jesus has always been but a body was formed for him and He dwelt on earth and appeard to us as ""God with us"" Emmanuel..

Matthew 1:23
"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

Jesus the Father and the Holy Spirit are One..

Isaiah 9:6
"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

And without contraversy great is the mystery of the trinity

1 Timothy 3:16
"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

The name "Satan" means adversary. He was the Tempter in Eden - the book of Revelation calls him the "Serpent of old". Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 are both rebukes and prophecies about earthly rulers. At the same time, there are references that many Christians believe are to the world's ruler, who is Satan. (Me included).

We need to know that Satan was God's enemy from the very beginning of the present human race. We see Adam succumbing to Satan's temptation. God gave authority over creation to Adam. By his betrayal, Adam gave that authority to Satan.

This situation applied until Lord Jesus came to the earth. Lord Jesus is the "Last Adam". When Lord Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He refused every one of Satan's enticements. So Lord Jesus reversed the situation and defeated Satan. Job is probably the oldest book in the Bible so it predates Lord Jesus by thousands of years. At that time, Satan was not defeated.

Things are not always what they seem. Job left himself open to Satan's attacks because he trusted his own righteousness and lived in fear of falling short of God's righteousness. While Satan gave Job a terrible time, God was in control the whole time. Job went from knowing about God to meeting God and coming to know God in reality. Job was greatly blessed after the ordeal. Satan's plot backfired. God wins. As always.

There is too much doubt about Enoch to classify it as scripture. The Jews refused to include it in their compilation of the Old Testament. Only two Orthodox denominations accept Enoch as scripture.

At one point Revelation wasn't to be included...if it wasn't, would you be saying the same thing?

His name was Yeshua, not Emmanuel.

Does it show us that, or is that simply your interpretation?
God's word teaches us this,

Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Psa.44:22

That I may know him,and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformableunto his death; Phil.3:10

There are just so many deep things which teach us this truth. It's walking with him, listening to his Spirit that really educate us.

And is 'satan' a proper noun (his name) or an adjective (a characteristic of the accusatory angel)?
In Job, "satan" is a noun meaning "adversary". It has become thought of as a name, but it means a person who opposes you. Either way, I wouldn't go nutty about it.

If you're studying a subject, do you take the textbook "seriously"? What is the alternative? Frivolously? Many Christians unfortunately treat non-canonical books as though they have no value, which is silly. While we rightly distinguish between Scripture and non-Scripture, there is no reason to conclude that books outside of Scripture have no value.

So, can we learn from the book of Enoch? Yes. Do we accord it the same authority as 1 Peter or Matthew? No. What it can do is give cultural context to the material found in Scripture, just as an atlas or history textbook can. In fact, it is reasonably clear that the New Testament writers referred to material that is found therein. That doesn't make Enoch canonical though, any more than Josephus is canonical for confirming the destruction of the temple.

And there are satans all over the world, people will encounter Satan in various forms. Do not get angry at Satan, that would be the failing of the test. Let Satan get angry and lash out, because you do not get angry and emotional. Good stuff

On whose authority? On Jude? On scholars? On yours? What about the men who hid scripture in the deep sea caves? You seem to be on the know, back it up.

According to scripture, including Enoch, here is what happened:

Before the earth was created, one third of the angels rebelled. There are three classes of angels: those of one class are watchers who watch over us. Watchers who have reveled are demons. They can take on human form as is told to us in Hebrews. One class goes constantly between earth and heaven as is told of when Jacob saw the ladders with angels going between heaven and earth. Scripture describes them as heavenly fire. The third class are cherubs. There were six cherubs, and a third fell away leaving Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. Two fell away and God took away their names, they were the angel of death and the angel of light. Satan was the angel of light, he is given a description not a name.

You can choose to accept what is told to us or reject it.

God was definitely not "heeding his advice". And he was definitely not in a trusted position. Would you trust the chief Liar and Father of Lies?

The name Satan in Hebrew is "ha Satan" which means "Adversary". So the Adversary -- who is an evil angel and a spirit being -- came to God to mock God and Job. God gave the Adversary permission to attack Job, but Job did not turn against God. And in the end God blessed Job mightily.

Please note that in the Old Testament, all angels (who are direct creations of God) are called "sons of God" (whether good or evil). Before the Flood the evil "sons of God" had unlawful intercourse with human women, and produced Nephilim (giants) and men of renown. The Flood was primarily because these angels had corrupted all of mankind. Now these same angels are locked and chained in Tartarus, awaiting their final judgment. See 2 Peter and Jude.

Satan is the "prince of the power of the air" and rules over all the evil angels (who are ranked in hierarchies). But God does not take any advice from this Adversary, for whom He has created Hell. Satan will be cast into the Lake of Fire for all the evil that he has done: And the devil that deceived them was cast into the Lake of Fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Rev 20:10)

You are not acknowledging what Satan was before he rebelled, Nehemiah was acknowledging that.
