how long are hostilities meant to go on for though? Like what if battles drags on for months even years? I mean I dont know, never 'played war' so what it is like a rugby game or something where its over in 40 minutes?
do they not cremate the bodies what if you cant find them, and also, does the other side do the same for their dead? what about the people that get killed who are NOT fighting.

You don't really play war but rather conduct battles leading to declared victory or surrender.
The US campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan were never declared as a war. Unfortunately, there was not really an exit strategy for either conflict. There was neither victory nor surrender in these two conflicts, just a lot of deaths, horrific injuries and tremendous waste of resources' and money.
