Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12, at least, that Prophecy is a Gift of The Spirit.
the message of wisdom, the message of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in various tongues, interpretation of tongues. "All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines."

In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul tells us that he wants us to seek Prophecy above all other gifts.
"Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.... the one who prophesies edifies the church. ...
Tongues... are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers....

But if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in while everyone is prophesying, he will be convicted and called to account by all, and the secrets of his heart will be made known. So he will fall facedown and worship God, proclaiming, “God is truly among you!”

Has this been true of Our Worship? This was the epitome according to Paul. Which churches are currently teaching that the members interrupt the Pastor when they receive a revelation during the "service"? Why are "western" churches denouncing the very idea of prophecy, such that anyone who points to the bible instead of their own thoughts, is accused of "Trying to be some prophet!"

Which of the methodologies of our common denominations, are instructing that we pursue prophecy? Tons of them want women to shut up in church, plenty want to eat the Passover, or eat the communion, or pray the proper wording in the prayer of some famous Saint, and not a few just want to hug a tree and everyone on earth.

Revelations 19:10 confirms there must be yet a place for Prophecy.
"... I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who rely on the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

It seems to me we have abandoned our bomber fleets, and are running about trying to defeat Satan's hosts with supply trucks.

All who have come to Jesus Yeshua have the Spirit of prophecy, so you need not look too hard.

The Spirit of Prophecy  Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

So, would you agree that we should be teaching that all new Christians should expect to be given prophetic visions and utterances, upon receiving the Holy Spirit?
Does your church teach this?

No, we should be teaching that the Holy Spirit distributes the gifts as He chooses (1 Corinthians 1:11). Nothing wrong with praying for spiritual gifts, as you quotes in 1 Corinthians 14:1; but we shouldn't teach that we should "expect" this or that gift. The whole idea of a gift is that it's given, not demanded.

Prophecy is teaching the Word by the Holy Spirit. As for what you think limit prophecy, no, prophecy is not simply foretelling events by personal revelations for all we need know it already written and known as the father wills.

Do not deny any believer's sharing of given understanding by the Holy Spirit.

That seems reasonable, since we'd be demanding on God. But is it perhaps that we often misunderstand what God considers a gift, or a demand, or maybe just the nature of how God views us?
Luke11 said:
"So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11What father among you, if his son asks for a fish,d will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!

In this case I don't misunderstand anything. I go by what scripture plainly teaches.

Sorry, this term gets used in a number of ways. Do you mean The Scriptures, or the person of Jesus?
I have given you the Scsripture from Revelation. I have shared how I have been given to understand, as others hae also. To continue in this revolving dooor approach would be wrong for me. You pray, and learn by the Holy Spirit. It is obvious you wish to drag out your view based upon your knowledge.

I'm actually just confused by your language choice, but yes, my query is direct, because I think we've given up something as a Western Church, and we are sorely lacking it.
If you're saying that Prophecy is teaching the Scriptures, then I would argue, that while Paul says this ability is the same Spirit, it is not the same Gift. The behavior you're describing seems to me to be exposition, which I would match to the Gift of Wisdom, or Teacher. But again, I think it's just a language use difference. I'm not at all claiming you in err, if that's what it seems.

Was Jesus over-speaking when he said that we could expect God to give the Holy Spirit when we ask? Is this a different spirit than the one Paul speaks? Was Jesus saying that we would only get part of the gift which we requested?
I can't disagree with your conclusion, God gets final say, but I think that I too am quoting scripture.

The key word is "ask"; I already stated this. We appear to be in agreement. I'm I incorrect?

I dunno. One of the other posters in this thread seems to be seeing that everyone gets prophecy immediately upon coming to Jesus. That may be true.

I believe that prophesy is just as real today as was in times before Christ; however, to a much lesser degree. God changes not and King Solomon wrote "Ecc_1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. " But now, we have Liberalism, Fact Checkers, Media Bias and mny more group willing to stiffle any form of God's word, labelling it hte-speech, they can, even with incarceration and death if need be. But we still have it. The proble really it finding it among the fraud.

i for one wish for less of this charismatic madness. i have never encountered a real prophet. always God telling them some useless garbage. its like God is their pal they want to play basketball with, cracking jokes with them ala joyce meyer. No reverence for God whatsoever. as for the women being quiet in church, that unfortunately for you and your movement is in the bible, new testament. paul's epistles. oops.

Where are Our Prophets

We are all called to witness and testify.

Luke 10:2
“Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”

The old prophets spoke of His first coming. We are to speak of His second.

Why are you not satisfied with the prophecies already given in the Bible? Do you wish to have your ears tickled?
