So it may come as a shock, I’m 32 , and a man. My favorite show of all time is little house. The morals in encompasses and the real life tragedies that occurred. It was a show that humbled you and a show that made you cry continuously. Laura and her father’s bond could not be matched by any other on tv in my personal opinion. Shows now have no meaning or value. They don’t teach right and wrong. Little house didn’t always end with a happy ending. There wasn’t always a win. But there was love and love for god and man. The Ingalls were human, they did wrong, but they knew when, and they apologized and did there best to forgive there fellow man and neighbour. Hard times tested them. And many times they suffered.

What I loved about Little House was the humanity in every episode. It’s played world wide, reruns over and over. Lost in time it still continues to challenge me as a man. It makes me question my own forgiveness to others and my own resilience in troubled times. Could I be Pa, could I be that type of man. I’d only hope I could try to be.

Fun fact. Michael Landon ( Pa) only become the actor for that role because the one chosen did not show. Must have been god playing a part in that. I can’t imagine a better actor for the role.

Another fun fact. Michael Landon’s real life did not shine as he did as Pa. Multiple divorces and half the man in real life. We can see the struggle in Michael’s life almost shown through in each episode. It’s as if his real life mirrors his saddest moments in Little House. Anyway folks.

Do you think this was such a good show too? Or am I living in my own head haha?

Funny story, like you I grew up watching it. My sister is five years younger than I am. When my mother found out she was pregnant my father wanted to name my sister in his namesake. My mother didn't want to tell him no. But we watched the show every week and one of the girls names was Melissa. So the story goes that when she was born and I ran in to see her for the first time I said " Oh Melissa, she's so pretty!" Well even my father knew that I had named her at that point and there was no changing it. So every once in a while when she gets on her high horse I remind her that but for me her name would be Eugenie. Which is a fine royal name but not so much in the real world.

My wife's daughter has the same name - but only one 's'. - Melisa.

It's endearing to know that so many men were watching this show, too.

And here is where I have to confess that although I loved the book "Little House in the Big Woods" and I think the book after that, I couldn't get into the show because the books traumatized me, and I didn't want to see that brought to life.

I was just a kid and loved reading about this pioneer family and how they managed daily life having to do everything from scratch. I loved the story of when Mr. Edwards swam across the creek during atrocious weather to make sure their family had a Christmas, and how Laura was SO excited to have a WHOLE PENNY of her own!

But then all the sad things started happening, and it just killed it for me. My heart was absolutely broken when Mary went blind, and in the later books when I read about Laura and her husband's son dying, I couldn't take anymore. It was just too sad for a kid who was already withdrawn and prone to sadness.

I tried to watch the show a few times, but when Nellie Oleson came on the screen, I wanted to pull her hair on Laura's behalf, and I couldn't watch anymore because it made me so angry! 😂

Maybe I'm just too attached and overly emotional!

I've had a favorite book on my table that I haven't read since the 1990's (Lightning by Dean Koontz,) but to re-read the story means I have to re-live the death of one of my favorite characters, and I just can't work up the heart to do so yet. 😭

I can understand. I can get wrapped up in characters too. Like Anne of Green Gables. When all her friends are getting married and she's still pushing Gilbert away. lol

But Nelly and Laura become friends in the end. So there is a bit of a happy ending there haha. But Nelly was a tyrant lol

I read the series.
I've seen one or two episodes of the tv version, but I think they were a bit different to the books.

You might enjoy this memoir called Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated. by Alison Arngrim.

Some funny and some harrowing moments in there!

I think for me the books were bittersweet, because near the end, it got sad, the house burned down, they had to keep moving place to place because Pa kept trying to outrun his debt..but for the girls at the time was one big adventure.

I think Laura is an example of a pioneer woman who took on everything life could give her. She famously did not want to 'obey' her husband. As the family of the Ingalls was only girls, Laura took on the tomboy role. Someone had to work on the farm!

She was kind of like Scarlett O'Hara (of Gone with the Wind) in that sense. Also from a family of only girls. No brothers to take the heavy loads. Also expected to be a wife and mother and give up her independence for a man.

Laura did have a little brother called Charles but he died at 9 months old.

Scarlett apparently had three brothers but they were all stillborn.

So the girls genes were strong but the boys genes were not...I don't know how that works, but even in the Bible woe betide the family of five girls - what are they going to do? Nobody to carry on the family name, and what about their inheritance?

Same thing with the five daughters of Pride and Prejudice, and also the four daughters of Little Women. It's really about survival, and the girls show they need a lot of guts to survive in a world where all they expected to do was to be a wife and mother and not have their own life.

It’s great that you’re bringing this up! It’s definitely one of my favorite shows, too. :) At least seasons 1–6, and maybe parts of season 7. After that, the cast changed too much. And Mary… yeah, I always felt really bad for her, too. She’s been through so much. I never want to see that episode with the school fire again. Way too sad. Sometimes I also wondered if the creators didn’t go a little overboard with the drama.

I bet you think that a man with the responsibilities that come with having a family "has his own life" (whereas, "the woman does not") - as opposed to having made great sacrifices that come with having a family.

Marriage is an option. But, it is a willful 'union' where both the husband and the wife agree that the joy of a shared life together is worth the sacrifices made by both the husband and the wife.

It is pure baloney to say that the wife gives up her life for the husband but that the husband does not give up his life for the wife. Both have given up the otherwise life they might have had because they both believe that the married life is better.
