My parents' fortune is their own, I'll inherit whatever's left for my own retirement, that's it.

And frankly speaking, they're overbearing and domineering materialists, everything I've done right is what I'm supposed to do, as my duties and obligations; everything I've done wrong is my fault, even when it's not, like if I slip and fall, they'd acowl at me for not watching where I'm going instead of asking if I'm hurt. And I don't blame them, we ought to honor our father and mother, right? I've just concluded it as the price to pay for such a comfortable life.

I'm truly sorry to hear this.

Thank you for providing some insight.

And it does indeed sadden me that your parents have apparently only shown care about things and not actually you. 😔🙏🏼💐

Yes, we honor our parents, but God also tells parents to love their children as He does.

I'm truly sorry your parents did not follow this.

Ephesians 6:4 -- Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger (do not exasperate them to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial, unreasonable, humiliating, or abusive, nor by showing favoritism or indifference to any of them,) but bring them up (tenderly, with loving kindness,) in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

May God right any wrongs you have suffered.

The debate between holding liquid vs. non-liquid assets (or how much of each) is interesting.

I'm seeing a lot of articles about baby boomers in the USA who bought houses as a store of wealth, but they're now stuck because one can afford to buy their houses.

I heard the story of one couple who just assumed their house would sell for, at the time, the appraised $800,000, so they signed on to build another house for $800,000. But with things being the way they are now, they've had to drop the asking price of their old house to around $650,000 -- and still haven't found a buyer.

One would hope/assume someone at that level has enough liquid assets to cover the difference -- and from what I've seen (I've known several people who built homes,) a new build always costs quite a bit more than originally estimated.

But for many people, all their equity is tied up in their house/real estate and they have no room to breathe.

Yes, I know this doesn't really have anything to do with your post.

I'm just talking out loud because I find the topic of finances, and the different ways people handle them, to be quite fascinating.
Yes, I have an uncle who fell into this trap, buying a house during the bubble, now he's stuck with it as well. My parents' apartment is for their own residential use, anything else might be in trust funds or bonds or insurance, I'm not sure.

I don't mean to pry into your family's business at all, but I appreciate you sharing.

Thank you.

I find conversations like this to be interesting.

As I said, I don't blame them. They grew up poor, the only "loving kindness" they understand is providing stuffs. I'm still grateful to God that I get to know Him though.

Well it's all just a number on the balance sheet, doesn't mean anything other than a sense of security.

This is also a great testament to what God has done in your life, and how you've allowed Him to work in your heart.

The fact that you try to understand, rather than blame, your parents -- and that you know material things are not love, but that God is love -- is quite an accomplishment.

Most especially since you were raised in an atmosphere that only knew how to give material things.

Kudos to you. 🙏🏼

I honestly can't blame you for not wanting to find a wife if it would mean going through the horror of dealing with a gold digger.

I wouldn't want anyone, man or woman, who's worked hard to save something, to be subjected to that kind of person.

This one needs a target emoji.

Good gravy.

First, NightTwister tried to take me out with a large dose of caffeine.

Now he's suggesting someone draw a target around me?!

Whatever have I done to incur his wrath??!!

(Well, I hold to what I said last time. At least it could be said that I was ACTIVELY TAKEN OUT of the fight rather than just backing down, or heaven forbid, THROWING IN THE TOWEL!) Mercy!

However, if it happened to be THIS target, I might begrudgingly acquiesce.

Even if it's not a gold digger, it is still puzzling to me on why anybody would even bother to date if not driven by their own lust. We live in a bizarre, depressing era, and I'm probably too old for this anyway. I don't expect anybody doomscrolling on social media and consuming AI slops in all their spare time would have any common ground with me on theology, classical music or literature.

Sometimes, people can pleasantly surprise you.

But if not, I agree, keeping to oneself isn't always the worst option, either.

Part of the reason I'm single is because even if I meet someone, I always ask myself if I would have more peace (would it be an improvement) with that person (and everything they come with, including their family,) or as I am now.

So far, it's clear to see what the answer seems to have been, lol.

But, to each their own. :)

How much more wrong could you be? Your comment was on target, not a target on you. Perhaps you've had too much caffeine today. Only camomile tea for you now.

Or people can stealthily tempt you, provoking your sinful desire, leading you to where you never have intended to go. I don't know about you, my peace is found in theology, classical music and literature.

You might be able to handle being eternally caffeinated...

Me, not so much. 🥺😳😂

I thought you were saying I'd make an excellent target! 🤣

Granted, I wasn't completely disagreeing...

But downgrading me to chamomile 🍵?!

That's just harsh! 😭

Chamomile doesn't go with popcorn 🍿 at all! 🤢

I wasn't expecting to see a reference to James Bond on a forum about dating advice.

The only people that could really tempt me are those that give more than they take, which is exceedingly rare, so I'm pretty safe.

And even when I do meet those kinds of people, they wind up becoming just a good friend. 🙂

I'm glad you've found peace in theology, classical music, and literature.

It most definitely helps to guard against temptations when we know what keeps us grounded. 👍🏼

This is why we all keep coming back.

The conversation goes off the rails so many times, we all can't wait to see where it will go next! 😂

This time it apparently even made it out to the shooting range! 🤣🎯🔫
