AnandaHya,One more thing, Yeshua never worked on the Sabbath, He was showing the difference between doing something good on Sabbath, like helping someone in dire need, healing, donkey in the ditch etc.

He was showing that what the pharisees were teaching was contrary to Torah. YHVH never said leave a man down because it's Sabbath, He didn't say you can't help anyone in an emergency.

I'm excuse me for being crude, but orthodox jews by what is called sabbath toilet paper, It's squares of toilet paper that are already torn apart, because they say it's work to tear the paper. It's rediculous and obsurd. This is not what YHVH said.
And it's because of stuff like that, that Yeshua had to explain these things. Shalom
yes I think there is a distinction that needs to be made.

out of necessity we must work to maintain our jobs, our homes, our bodies. we have to be concerned with things of this world like food and clothing and I believe God entrusts us with the caretaking of various things which differs. Like the parables of the servants and vinekeepers and harvesters, etc.

God has tasks for us to do and strive but He also wants us to rest and rejoice and focus on HIM and spiritual things and see that life is more than this world and it is more then just work.

to help someone who has fallen or heal is not work but mercy.

God would rather we understand that the Sabbath is about mercy and not sacrificing things of this world but how rest and peace is a way GOD is being merciful to us. It is meant to be a blessing not a burden.

*ps. are you pulling my leg about the toilet paper squares?
seems kind of out there.

Rachel, I'm sorry but I speak, read and write hebrew. It is YHVH, hebrew letters yod, hey, vav, hey. The only way you can have a w in a hebrew word is with two vav's. Shalom
that is modern hebrew...

in biblical hebrew they had the letter waw instead of vav...it made the W sound...for the V sound they used the letter vet

God's covenant name was spelled yod he waw he...YHWH

I agree that on sabbath we are to help people in an emergency but, not to maintain our jobs, for where would our faith be? And where does it end?
Exodus 20:8-11
(8) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
(9) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
(10) But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
(11) For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Matthew 6:28-34
(28) And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
(29) And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
(30) Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
(31) Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(32) (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
(33) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
(34) Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

The Sabbath is a type and a shadow. Lots of things in the Old Testament are types and shadows. They tell us of glorious things to come. Sabbath means rest. The Lord Jesus is our Sabbath now. He is our rest from works, and the Law. Without the Lord Jesus we would still have to perform the Law. But the Lord fulfilled the Law for us.
Thank You Jesus.

Matthew 11:25-30

25At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
If the Lord is our new sabbath rest, why does HaShem keep the shabbat as well?

That seems pointed, but it dawned on me, on the 7th day he looked over all He had made an saw that it was good, and He rested.

Rachel, please don't assume you know what style hebrew I know. Because you're wrong again. Yes, I know modern hebrew, but I also study and teach, Paleo hebrew and pictography hebrew. There was never a waw letter ever in hebrew, and as I said you have to have a double vav for a w sound. And the v sound that is also used in hebrew is from the letter bet,(the second hebrew letter). There are originally 22 letters in the ancient hebrew, there are now over 30 with the added letters such as sofits. You make it really hard to not get irritated with you Rachel, but I'm going to be good. Please stop trying to educate me with my language. I am hebrew.

come on Avinu, don't you have irritating little sisters?

lol here is a verse I repeat to myself often during this time of family gatherings, perhaps it will help you. ;)

James 1:2-4
New King James Version (NKJV)
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

weren't you saying something about needing more patience?

here is an article showing the waw in ancient hebrew... Biblical Hebrew - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

the fact that in modern hebrew the vav can also make the O and U sounds is a result of its original pronunciation as a W instead of a V

also the sofits are not counted as separate letters...they are just a special form for certain letters when they appear at the end of a word...

Rachel, I already know all this stuff, to get a w sound for a word, it still has to be a double vav. I just told you about the sofits, hence there now being over 30 letters in the alphabet. You're not telling me anything I don't already know. It is YHVH, that is how it has ALWAYS been spelled. And as Laodicea said this post is not about this. If you want to start a post on YHVH's name, then we can discuss this further and I can teach you some stuff on the true hebrew, otherwise I'm done with this conversation on this post. Shalom

AnandaHya, being a doctor is one thing, you can't put peoples health on hold and YHVH knows that. That pertains to life and death. Being a cop, military, some things are out of our control, and YHVH knows that. When we make it clear to our Father that we will do all we can to honor His Sabbath, then He comes in a makes things happen and fights for us. As for preachers, that's not a job, it's a calling and a privelege. Shalom

If the Lord is our new sabbath rest, why does HaShem keep the shabbat as well?

That seems pointed, but it dawned on me, on the 7th day he looked over all He had made an saw that it was good, and He rested.
The Lord Jesus kept all the Laws perfectly. The Lord Jesus followed the Law. He didn't fulfill the Law until His Sacrifice to us. Once He was Crucified for our sins the Law was Fulfilled. Our faith in His perfect sacrifice is what keeps us from the curse of the Law, and the Wrath of God.

Acts 15:5-11

5But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
6And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
7And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
8And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
9And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
10Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

The Law of God will continue to do what it was always designed to do. It will cause the proud to harden their hearts and it will cause the humble to seek their Saviour.

God Bless You

Yes the purpose of the Law is to show that we need a saviour
Galatians 3:24
(24) Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

This was the purpose of the Law in the OT as well when God gave it, God gave the Law and the gospel. He first gave the Law then gave the sanctuary message which teaches the gospel.

Grandpa, no where in scripture does it say that when Yeshua died on the cross that the Torah was fulfilled.

romans 10:4..."Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes."
This is talking about the law can't make you righteous, but as I said, scripture doesn't say He fulfilled Torah, Matt. 5:17-19 makes that clear.

Genesis states that God rested on the 7th day and SANCTIFIED IT. Why would God need to rest? Please google who has the healthiest diet in the Christian faith. Even science is showing us that the Biblical way of doing things is better, but you dont have to do it if you dont want to its up to you but I am more comfortable when I follow Gods advice and do what Yeshua did.

Blessings
