Hey Everyone,

What kinds of things push your buttons and how have you learned to cope? Are you good at managing anger (if so, give us all some tips), or have you found yourself in some hot water, all because you lost your temper?

Because God convicts me very heavily over honesty, dishonesty (stealing in particular) is one of my pet peeves. At my last job, someone was stealing my hairspray... and for some reason, it was really ticking me off. I'd put a new bottle in my locker and it would be gone in a week (I rarely used it.) What really irritated me was that in 10 years of working there, I'd only had things taken from me once before, and because of the ways our shifts were at work, you could always tell who was taking something from you. (I never kept anything valuable or personal in my locker).

And here's where I ignored my good Christian foundations.

I took an empty bottle of hairspray, filled it with red food coloring instead, and simply waited. The person I knew was taking using it was scheduled later that day... (and what irritated me the most is that I was 99% sure the reason it was disappearing so fast is not because of grooming issues--that wouldn't have bothered me--but because this person was using it to get high.) And then I " happened" to have a conversation about it with one of my bosses, who was like an uncle to me.

"Kim," he sighed, "Of course it's wrong that someone is stealing. But now that I know what you've done, I would have to discipline you as well." "Shoot," I replied defiantly, "A three-day suspension would be a vacation!! I'd just eat ramen noodles and watch TV!" But--and here's what finally got to my conscience--he said, "Two wrongs don't make something right."

Yowsers. For some reason, I knew the Holy Spirit was speaking to me. And so I took the bottle, threw it away, and posted a sign in the locker room (you see? I couldn't let it go! One of my famous faults...), and wrote that I was very disappointed that after 10 years, I was finally putting a lock on my locker because someone (I didn't name the person) was stealing. I also wrote, "I would like to think that whoever it is is just having a hard time and is working to become a better person," and signed my full name.

Eventually, I came to see this person through different eyes--they were having a very hard time in life and fighting drug addiction. I had even thought that I might be able to hire this person to help me with some work around my house as an extra source of income. But something in my heart told me, If you have them over to your house, they'll steal from you there as well.

I tried my best to be kind to the person and prayed for them. God changed my heart.

But, as you can see, it took a LOT of work.

How about the rest of you? Tell us about a time when you got pushed just a little too far... Did you stay in control, or snap? What things push you over the edge... and how does God help you maintain a spirit of control and forgiveness? (Or, if you fell off the wagon like I did, how did He get you back on track?)

I have a lot of things that make me angry. But it takes an awful lot to make me actually snap at someone.

Most of the stuff I notice that irritates me God reminds me that I'm either guilty of the same thing myself, or was guilty of it at some time.

If I put a note on my hairspray also saying 'please don't use' I don't think I would find anything wrong with doing what you did. lol :D

I've always wanted to bake some cookies with diaorhorettics in them (How do you spell that word) in my fridge and put a note saying please don't eat.

diuretics i think. But you probably more likely mean laxatives.

Things that make me lose it are lack of common sense or blatant stupidity.

What makes me mad...

Lying. And even worse, lying for really no reason

Other than that, im pretty even tempered and i can usually take a lot before i snap out in anger.

I usually get upset when someone's selfish actions are affecting others in a very negative way. I can handle it if someone's being a jerk to me, I'm not easily offended and I don't hold grudges but when they start messing with others, it gets harder for me to keep my mouth shut. :/

I'm nice until you shoulder bump me..then I will destroy you.

Kidding aside, I'm nice until someone is just over the top nasty and they direct their anger right at me. In my adult life, that hasn't happened too often.

I had to deal with an extremely abusive client a few months ago. The screaming at the top of his lungs I could deal with, but what set me off was when he made some snarky comment about how I needed to do everything he was requesting right then and there because I personally was no better than something I won't repeat on the site. Lol, the only thing that stopped me from responding back just as rudely was the idea of getting fired. I called his bluff though and told him to just take his business elsewhere and he calmed down a little bit. I went home for the rest of the day after talking to him, I was just in such a foul mood after.

I'm also nice until you mess with someone I care about, and am not shy about confronting anyone on that.

Normally people demonstrate basic manners and stuff, so I'm good

I was just going to say bullying, Catlynn. It really brings something out in me.

I totally agree!! Hairspray isn't the only thing in the world that makes me angry! :D

Things like inequality and people being picked on unfairly truly brings out the worst in me. I was with someone once whose co-worker made a racial slur at him and when he told me about it, me, being the good Christian I am (yeah right!) talked about going and slashing his tires.

But my friend said, "Kim, you just have to let things like that go, it's not even worth it," which made me admire him all the more. I wish I could be more like that. (For the record, I don't have a history of violence, but I can't deny thinking about it--whenever I've talked about it, people have always been there to stop me.)

When its blatantly obvious that someone is being fake. Like an associate being overly nice at clothing stores or wherever, just so that they will buy from them.

Also, its happend to me a few times that if I'm at the salon getting my hair cut or whatever, and I'll end up with a stylist that likes to complain about people in her life, and loves to share her complaints with me  Ugh, I'm paying you to get a service done, not so you can unload on me (I know thats super uncompassionate, but honestly, thats how I feel)

Also, people who complain about their life and yet are not willing to improving it.

What chaps my fanny the worst is people who use and abuse others followed closely by those who refuse to look beyond someone's past to see who they are today.

Sis you responded properly. The important thing is remembering why you responded that way. Believe me when I tell you I have been there MANY OF TIME ! Always remember to respond in a manner that's pleasing to The Father. And ask the individual what led them to do what they did or how they reacted. It opens up a door for real ministry because now they have a reason to want what you have. Blessings :-)

Hellooo--I can't imagine having to deal with that kind of thing from clients on a regular basis. God bless you for keeping your cool--I know I couldn't!! I've worked in retail all my life and the comments made by customers in that field are bad enough.

I'm really enjoying everyone's thoughts... I was also hoping maybe people might like to share times when they lost their cool and how they later dealt with it, repented, etc?

Of course, we're always SUPPOSED to act in a Christian manner but obviously doesn't always happened... I'm the girl who's more interested in damage control and the aftermath than sugary perfections.

Yep that's the one Nautilus.... lol

You are a green haired boy.

.

This. Except I don't really want them to talk at all... - not that it really ticks me off, it's just mildly irritating.

Bullying

Abuse/neglect of children, the elderly or those with challenges

Christians who make vicious sarcastic remarks and gossip about people rather than approaching an issue in a more constructive, edifying manner. Especially re: things that are really none of their business in the first place.

Christians that pride themselves too much just because they think they're good christians. Christians that sit on their high horse while they point their finger at others.

I used to be so mellow that I was labeled super-mellow, and people thought I was high all the time.
Then I got older and more on edge..

People who say things like ''im brutally honest'' as a thinly veiled attempt at being a jerk. They just can't admit they are a jerk.
People who are sensitive to being insulted but just blatanly and with a broad brush make general insults. ''Oh you don't like my singing? You must hate all humans with vocal chords"" "" Oh hey i just showed up but it seems like you all are boring people, how about at least trying to entertain me''

I guess it just boils down to people being obliviously inconsiderate. That bugs me even more then people who know they are.

oh and this is a new one..christians who make gay jokes..and i see this more amongst the younger women for some reason
If you think being gay is a sin why do so many christians joke about and then get offended when you say you don't find it the least bit funny.

Now I'm angry. I'm going to add people who start threads asking what makes me angry.

Sexist attitudes.

Closed-minded outlooks.

People who use "being old-fashioned" as an excuse to be a jerk.

Oh, and basically, any invisible injustice that no one really notices or seems to care about, allowing the injustice to continue and manifest into something ugly in the long-term.

I am mostly a nice person, but when certain attitudes get me irritated, I have to leave. I have learned to walk away from my triggers, because arguing becomes too tempting otherwise. And I'm old enough to know when it's pointless to try and open someone elses mind.
