I think I'll agree with you on this point. Nudity does not belong in a holy setting where our focus should be on God. Now we're not told if when David danced he was completely naked, though it hints at that. We don't know if it was wrong per se. I agree that it depends on the situation in which the nudity is presented. I've seen Schindler's List and I'm not enticed by the nudes in the concentration camp scene.

I believe that partial nudity in art is harmless most of the time. But, again, it depends on the depravity of the audience in this fallen world. I've seen women gawk at a man's hip flexors because of what they hinted was below them. So it's not that men are depraved and women are innocent in this regard.

I know that God in Isaiah 20 commanded Isaiah to walk around nude. I don't believe God would order one to do something sinful. But the purpose was not, "Look how tasteful Isaiah is." The purpose was, "so the king of Assyria will lead away stripped and barefoot the Egyptian captives and Cushite exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared—to Egypt’s shame." I just have to wonder why Christians support full nudity in art when the human figure can be represented beautifully with partial nudity and the situation becomes much less murky.
Most excellent response... and not cuz you agreed with me...:)

i've danced naked before the Lord. i wonder if that's too much information.

Good point. The sin is not in nudity, the sin is in lust, which again comes to the viewer knowing what their limits are. By putting the blame on artwork, or the artist, the person does not own up to their own sin.

for sure! nude in purity was how we were created to be.
sin opened our eyes and there was need for covering. but that's not how God intended it. He intended for us to live unclothed in communion with Him and our fellow man.

there's nothing shameful about our bodies. there's only our hearts and what our hearts do with the information we now have upon eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

I prescribe to the doctrine of Dr. Tobias Funke, self professed "Never Nude". The less anyone sees of me nekkid, the more blessed & fruitful the world will be. LOL

There are really 3 schools of thought:

1. Nudity is ok
2. Nudity is not ok.
3. Nudity is ok sometimes.

Now, lets see what the bible dictates, or not..

1. God created man and woman nude.
2. God sewed clothes for the man and woman only after they realized they were naked.
3. God ordered Moses' hem to be low so that his nakedness would not be exposed to the altar when he approached.
4. Naked we came into this world...and naked we shall leave it.
5. :p

It'd be interesting to include a more specialized poll with this thread that specified whether one was a man or woman and what their belief on this topic was. And then ask ourselves why people believe the way they do.

I've been to art shows with my husband and as far as I can tell tasteful classic nudes don't turn him on. However when we go to Wal Mart he begs me to wear Pajama bottoms. I guess that does something for him. just kidding.

I had something super wise I was going to post to show off my knowledge, and then read this, and completely forgot.

^^^ Zao was going to tell us about his favorite pair of Hello Kitty pajamas.

One of many in his own personal collection. I've heard he also has a Hello Kitty guitar pick AND fights his daughter for over matching hair bows that match his pajamas.

Well, at least he's not nude.

It must be the pajama bottoms what a distraction. lol. I don't like the sweat pants with words on the butt. It looks so stupid.

Zao in Hello Kitty pajamas? It may not be a nude but I would consider it to be art.

Of the rather comedic genre. :)

(Zao wearing Hello Kitty pajamas, sipping coffee from his Hello Kitty coffee mug...) Heh heh heh.

Of course, you all know I'm just writing this because he looks better in those pajamas than I do.

OK. Derail (sorry). What is with this Hello Kitty crap? And what's with adult women being obsessed with it?

All I know about it is that if you shoot an adult woman's Hello Kitty toy in the head with a BB gun, she cries like a little girl. So, that's fun and weird.

Seriously, I don't get it either. So I'm glad you asked.

I don't know about other women, but Hello Kitty is like a symbol of a lost part of my childhood.

My parents were very conservative when I was growing up and we were on a tight budget. I used to look very longingly at all the cutesy, girlie things in the store but they always said no, out of interest for the future. I never had a Barbie, Strawberry Shortcake dolls, etc. and I never had a lot of the girlie things other little girls have--not that I'm complaining, but I still haven't lost my love of bright, colorful, cheery designs (anyone remember Lisa Frank? I loved it but was never allowed to have any of her things.)

I was secretly very jealous of a girl in my class who had ALL the latest and greatest knick knacks--pencil boxes, lip glosses, paper clips, colored writing instruments... and I had my plain yellow #2 Meads.

When I grew up, worked my own jobs, and had my own money... I decided to splurge on some of the things I couldn't have as a child. I like to write letters, so my Hello Kitty merchandise of choice is NOT clothing or accessories, but stationery, stickers, and rubber stamps. My friends know I'm a big kid at heart so they see it as an extension of my personality.

To me, Hello Kitty is a symbol of my adult independence... And my ability to be able to afford the things my family couldn't when I was growing up. Within reason, of course. The most I'll shell out is maybe a whopping $10 for a stationery set. And I have a small shelf of H.K. things my little niece has gotten for me over the years. :) I also made covers for my sewing machines in colorful Hello Kitty fabric, just as my own act of adult defiance--the fact that now I get to have my own say in what I can and can't have.

Yes, I know I'm an odd duck and most won't understand this, but to me, Hello Kitty is almost a symbol of childhood rebellion.

Sorry for the derailment, just had to add my own contribution.
