Try something different. Reread the conversation. You started it. Surely you should be able to see how it continued.
I don't have a clue what you're talking about. I said I'd rather lie than turn Jews over to the Nazis to be exterminated. That apparently makes you angry.

Choose to do neither...
If I was hiding Jews in my home, and the Nazis asked me if I was hiding Jews in my home so that they could take them away and kill them, then I'd say "no." Why are you harassing me over this?

Why would you willingly sin?

Why would any Christian knowing sin, on purpose???

Just tell them "if I were I wouldn't admit it" and laugh real big and they'll most likely think you are joking and leave.

Just find a different way to answer their question that does not involve sin.

It's like in modern times when doctors at the doctor's office asks parents if they have any guns in their house which is their Constitutional right... the answer is "ain't nonya bidness"

I don't think it's a sin to protect innocent people from being murdered.

I would do the same.

But... lying IS in fact a sin...

It's simple... find a way to answer the question without committing sin, or simply don't answer the question at all.

Besides, back in nazi germany someone would have ratted you out for hiding Jews and they'd kill you and those you were hiding so this exmaple is really a mute point.

What you are referring to is what they call "situation ethics" where people see themselves as upstanding citizens doing right... unless there is a need for wrong doing and then they do wrong knowingly and on purpose

Do you think Jesus would have stuck to the law? He famously healed on the sabbath and was condemned for it by those following law.

It's not a sin if you are motivated by love. It is a sin when you are motivated by selfishness.

Did you quit smoking yet?
I know that your post wasn't directed at me but I will answer it anyway. Sadly, still smoke. I have asked God to remove this from my life but He hasn't answered this prayer yet because He knows I have been lying when I say that in my heart I truly want to quit. I need to stop lying and face the truth before it kills me. I will pray on this.

I smoked heavily for twelve years. I finally got myself to quit back in 1986. It took about six weeks to get over the urge to smoke. It was well worth the effort. I think Depleted had tried to stop smoking and then gave up.

Healing on the sabbath was not against the Law of God... if it were, then Jesus committed sin.

No, healing on the sabbath was against the things the pharasees and saducees aded to the law that was not of God

It's not a sin if you are motivated by love.
God is Love, and God never, ever, ever, motivates anyone to sin.

However, the god of this world will motive people to sin for the world's definition of love.

Sadly, still smoke. I have asked God to remove this from my life but He hasn't answered this prayer yet
You still smoke because you want to. Recognize it as a sin and decide to quit.

God would never have parted the Red Sea had Moses not got his feet wet... so quit buying them and start the process of training yourself to not enjoy sinning against your own body.

When you first started smoking, you had to tarin yourself to believe "this inhaling smoke this is great!"... now, train yourself to believe this is a sin (it damages your body which you are supposed to be submitting unto the Lord as a living sacrifice), and admit it and quit it!

Oh and yeah... I been there, so I know all about the lie the devil tells as he claims in the first person "I can't quit" that you keep receiving as being your own thought.

Exodus says this.

Exodus 20:16 NKJV
[16] "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Exodus 23:1-2 NKJV
[1] "You shall not circulate a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked
to be an unrighteous witness. [2] You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor
shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice.

Interesting thought. What is an unrighteous witness? I came across this If it helps.

Strong's Definition
From H2554; violence; by implication wrong; by
metonymy unjust gain: - cruel ({-ty}) {damage} {false}
{injustice} X {oppressor} {unrighteous} violence
({against} {done}) violent ({dealing}) wrong.

Brown-Driver-Briggs' Definition

  1. violence, wrong, cruelty, injustice

Maybe there is room for lying if done with the correct motives, to protect for example,
to preserve from evil. To prevent wrong and cruelty, etc. I think there is.

Ive had to lie to my aunt several times, when a person you love is suffering from
delirium and ranting and getting upset and you know lying about something will
settle them down and make it easier for medical staff to take that blood test, or
take their blood pressure etc. What do you do.

Do you tell them the truth and leave them ranting and swearing at staff which hinders necessary
medical procedures. This is just one example that came to mind.

If you have a person who keeps seeing imaginary mice, dogs, cats, zebras (which my aunt did).
Its no good saying it's all in their mind that just makes them worse. Once I had to tell my
aunt they had come to say hello then they would leave after a short visit.

Re the hiding of Jews. That is a matter of protecting and preserving life from
evil. I believe such things are permitted. Have folks ever read about Corrie Ten Boom.

What about Rahab, should she have told the truth if she has been asked.

Joshua 6:17 NKJV
[17] Now the city shall be doomed by the LORD to destruction, it and all who are in it.
Only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because
she hid the messengers that we sent.

Incidentally I don't think smoking is a sin, it's bad for your health and
God wants the best for you. He doesn't want people to die of smoking related
diseases so for all those reasons it's good to stop. But as far as I am aware
the bible doesn't say smoking is a sin.

Maybe it could cause a person to fall into sin, but I don't think smoking
specifically is a sin. In that respect it's the same as drinking alcohol.

Really??? It's OK for Christians to knowingly and on purpose engage in activity KNOWN to destroy the Body? Do we need to trout out the evidence that smoking destroys the body? You do know that it is toxic, right?

One would have to not die to self and refuse to submit their body to the Lord as a living sacrifice to be on board with smoking to not be a sin... in which case, why bother to call themselves Christians if they are going to dishonor the Lord like that?

If they're going to smoke, they may as well get drunk, do drugs, engage in perverted sex, steal, cuss, beat up little old ladies, and rob banks... just let yo freak flag fly

That's sort of taking that verse out of context.... it's about giving up our own worldly desires and wants in order to follow Jesus.. it's not talking about smoking cigarettes.

Get a bit of perspective robbing a bank is hardly comparable to having a
cig. Gee you are emotional for a man, if you had been a woman I might have
thought it was PMT. :D

Plus, I have seen no scriptural evidence that says that if we harm our body, it's a sin.

It may be stupid, but it's not a sin.

Yes, and smoking is a wordly desire of the flesh... it's an intoxicant that makes the flesh feel good... sinful.
