Hey Folks!

Tell us about some things you love and yet hate at the same time. It could be a relationship with someone (friend, family member, neighbor, etc.), a hobby or interest, an object (your car?), event, organization, job... whatever comes to mind.

I have a love/hate relationship with sewing, which is my inspiration for this thread. It's a hobby I've dabbled in on and off since I was a kid, but admittedly, I've had much more off time than on. I know clothes seem pretty simple but have you ever tried to actually put a piece of clothing together that fits??? Piecing together flat pieces that drape and move properly around angled bodies is truly a work of engineering and I admire people who can whip up entire outfits in a few hours or days.

I am not one of those people. I spent half my morning going through 10 different patterns for pants just trying to find a certain kind of pocket (cargo) to put on a pair of shorts that originally does not even have a pocket. My brain is also foggy from the 12 different steps I've read over 3 times to insert the zipper (fly zippers are especially challenging vs. something like a zipper on the front of a hoodie), along with my 16 additional notes I made the last time I did it that are supposed to make this next time easier!

My biggest complaint is that I will put my heart and soul into a project... and the stupid thing won't fit. Out of my last 15 projects, I've had maybe 2 that were successful. I felt better when I read in a sewing book that over 50% of patterns aren't designed as they're shown in the picture and will not turn out right anyway, making me feel somewhat better. Every failed project is still a learning experience, but I feel like I'm always spinning my wheels. In some cases, I'm able to turn it into something I can give to and adjust for someone else.

I often feel like I should just give my machine away and put down the needled for good. The only reason I still sew at all is because I have the hope of someday being able to make most of my own things... that will actually fit... instead of spending a day at stores and still not being able to find a pair of pants for work. I've also been able to make things for others (special pants for a girl who was pregnant at work; shorts for my Mom who wears a size smaller than what you find on the rack; a mint green dress for a co-worker going through a rough time, etc.) but it would be nice to be able to make some things for myself sometimes, too!

I love sewing--the creativity, the whole process of a "phoenix rising out of the ashes", the fact that it forces me to think in very different directions. But oh, how I loathe it at the same time. And yet, like a bad relationship, I just can't seem to walk away! :p

What about the rest of you? Why are so many of us so persistent at something that we love in theory... but part of us just can't stand it at the same time?

What a fun topic!

I have a love/hate relationship with sleep.

Also with exercise.

Also with love. (And hate.) :p

These are over-simplified. I may add to it with more thought-provoking answers soon.

That's just awful! What a way to make sure people fail before even opening the pattern up. -_-

I've seen some of your work and I definitely would press you to continue! (See my play on words there?) I totally get the desire to make something rise out of the ashes. That's why I love painting (rooms) so much. A new coat of paint can make teh ugliest room into something amazing. Sewing with a pattern is quite beyond my skill capacity, but it's something I've always admired in others.

my love/hate relationships, all of which the ratios of which swing wildly depending upon the day/circumstance:

+ having rather long hair (especially in the summer)

+ being single

+ working for myself

that's all i can come up with for now. nice thread idea, kimbo. : )

I hate my purse. I carry it anyway, because I love my purse. It's a kinda hideous, cheap (from Target) white with black zippers contraption designed to make me carry around a bunch of junk I will probably/probably not need, and it is the place where gum wrappers and loose change go to die.

At all times, it contains:
a digital camera that I never use
Pepper spray
8,391 business cards (or maybe just 3...I'm not sure)
cherry chapstick
driver's license and other such identification junk in case I forget who I am
several dollars worth of change, yet never any quarters

Sometimes, it may or may not contain:
a random diaper
a set of keys
actual money
cards/invitations that I forget about until the event has passed and angry people call me
perfume that makes my skin breakout in hives but smells nice
shopping lists from a month or more ago
a pen that I can never find
long-lost scrub hoes (good one, autocorrect...but I meant scrum hoes) (no! SCRUNCHIES!!)
the world (on a chain)

The stupid thing is heavy and annoying. I've been known to leave it hanging in public restroom stalls and actually drive away before remembering it. I hardly ever use anything out of it (but if I leave it at home, guess what I miss?).

Yesterday, I destroyed the zipper. I stuffed a plastic bag inside and zipped it super quick...now there's a Walmart bag stuck in the zipper and I can't get it out.

I think it's time for a new purse to love/hate.

Exercise, I procrastinate but enjoy it when I'm doing it.

Ice cream, it kills my stomach, but it's ice cream.

Water chestnuts, I don't like the texture, but they taste good in spinach dip.

Autocorrect kept destroying my word- I meant scrunchies (you know, for the putting up of hair into a ponytail or hideous bun)

I have a love relationship with eating chocolates in bed.
But I hate the 3.14 lbs of weight I gain for each chocolate ate in bed.

I have a love relationship with Mooseburgers.
But I cannot think of anything I hate about Mooseburgers.

I hate getting on the treadmill, but I LOVE when the endorphins kick-in and it's time to get off the treadmill. :)

The lift. Especially squats - I'm at the point where there's often a sense of dread when I've loaded the bar to the work weight. But usually once a week, I'm successful at hitting my 5x5, and there's a real sense of accomplishment about it. I am also very much aware of how the squat benefits all of my other lifts, too. But there's always that sense of dread.

I definitely have a love/hate relationship with my job. Even if I were blessed with three grades and six classes of perfectly behaved and optimally involved students, I would still have gradebooks, parent meetings, IEPs, professional developments, standardized testing, fund raising, budgeting, entry forms, eligibility checks, UIL deadlines, TMEA meetings, region auditions, region clinics, lesson plans, department meetings, department chair meetings, at-risk assessments...you know, if I could NOT do anything else, and JUST TEACH, my job would be the most amazing job in the world. ^_^

Oh me too! I have short stubby little fingers that refuse to do bar cords and it's so frustrating.

I've a love/hate relationship with food in general and my work (love the people, hate the work...but finishing up in less than two weeks so it'll be one off the list)

Customers, though I hope I don't actually hate any of them. They can be very nice, and of course they're necessary for business. But they can also be unreasonable or rude.

- Programming.
It is great fun, but my friends either know nothing about it, or are way better than me, so I feel like I'm terrible at it.
(Especially as I know I don't know half of what I should when I am to use it for a job purpose in the future)

- Studying (though I don't study any more). I love learning, but I don't take criticism very well :p

Owning kittens lol. There is mostly love, though.

Also singleness, as others have said.

Maya.

Maya's a high-end 3D graphics program capable of much good.... and much pain. It can be used to create awesome visuals... and when it simply vanishes from the screen without notice, and you just got something right where you want it and hadn't saved yet, you want to rip the software out of the computer and beat it the way the Hulk beat up Loki in Avengers.
