If you want to know why disputes happen on forums (or social media in general) nowadays, here is the reason:
Person A makes a thread about a topic.
Person B comes along and one of two things happen: Either Person B criticizes what Person A said, or Person B responds with some reply that is not at all confrontational.
If Person B responds in the first way, then Person A responds with a rebuttal and we have a debate on our hands. Either that or Person C comes along and jumps in to criticize Person B and/or defend Person A.
Look at any social media status update or forum thread where there is bickering and you will see the exact same trend play out over and over again. Someone comes along and criticizes another person's post and all of a sudden you have two perspectives pitted against each other and other people join in and take a side.
If you want to avoid this kind of disharmony, 1) don't respond critically to someone else, and 2) don't respond to another person's criticism. Don't engage in taking sides.
Of course there are some things that I think are worth having discussions about. I'm one who likes to think critically myself. But if it's a topic about the weather or bike-riding, then yeah, not worth anyone's time, and it is lame when someone turns a light-hearted thread into something more serious.
