Immodesty is usually in the eye of the beholder.
People should take the time to think about what they are wearing.. If they love their neighbour they will seek to take reasonable steps not to provoke in them thoughts that are not right with the will of God..

I attend a fairly "progressive" church, and about a quarter of the people wear shorts. Due to my background, I instinctively notice male reactions. It is interesting that even pretty short shorts hardly ever phase many of the men. And the younger men look even less than some of the older ones.... THAT was a bit of a surprise to me.
Why?

If you think about it.. Older men who where raised up in a society and times where woman on average covered up more would be more distracted when woman in church start wearing short shots.. But younger guys who grew up with girls around them being covered less will naturally be distracted far less by woman wearing less...

wow you're church sucks. lets hope and pray no lost person gets lost in that church. they would see that and think its ok for christians to do it. progressive is code-word for apostate. let the excuses roll in im waiting. no apostle would of accepted whats going on in today's "progressive" churches.

Your first four words say as much as I think anyone needs to know about what you must find acceptable. :)

As 1Timothy2:9-10 goes,
"I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearl or expensive clothes, but with good dees, appropriate for women who profess to worship God".

Modesty is beautiful but it's been lost.

I don't think Jesus ever said anything about acting (or dressing) one way inside a "church" building, but operating by another standard elsewhere. I suspect there are very few "Christians" spouting holiness and modesty whose dressers wouldn't contain a pair of shorts if you were to take a look.

The greatest deed ever was done in scanty wear when our Lord was crucified.

I believe it was Isaiah who was ordered to prophesy in the nude, three years I believe….you tell me.

I tell ya what, if you don't like the clothes they wear, take them to town and buy them something else.
There may be a million reasons why a person wears what they have on.
From reading that scripture the best I could tell it said not wearing jewelry or braided hair. I think it's about flaunting wealth.
I think generally people wear what they have and what they think is the best of what they have.

If you bothered to teach Christ, and lived one another I bet anyone who didn't dress right would go away or change their clothes in the light of sound teaching.

I like what you said at the end there about sound doctrine which produces love and righteousness (this is the goal of the gospel), but indeed you are mistaken about the verse, if you look a bit more closely you can see: "1st Timothy 2:9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire" It's talking about clothing that is modest which would include not dressing in a flaunting type of way that is unreasonable and showy, but also not dressing like a Jezebel :)

Perhaps that was considered dressing modestly back in the day.

Ok, but so what? i mean Modesty is obviously more of a problem for women than men, hence its applied that way in the bible (1st Tim 2:9).

oh yes

'so what' is definately the right answer

like I said, your agenda is showing

if you want to berate women, just do it and don't hide behind little notations like ...oh and men too

so nothing in scripture is written to men...only women

maybe it's men leering at women that is the actual problem

maybe they have an 'eye' problem and would like to blame it on women

you can throw out scripture from now until camels fly, but it is a heart problem

anyway, this topic has been cooked to death in this forum. have fun

Apparently. This thread brings back memories of the women wearing pants in church thread a few years ago.

a tight bun, a stern face and black lace up granny shoes is the acceptable apparel for many

and the dress should be ugly as home made sin and be effectual in causing people to have an upset tummy

that way men will be able to look around and not be accused of leering
