How are we defining a relationship? I'm going to tell you about my first love.( younger folks. please close your ears) I had mentioned in my bio that I was in a musical in high school. My parents felt that the relationship with my drama teacher was in-appropriate . Sent me to live with my father's sister in Port St. Lucie .

New world for me. Humidity! I was a senior in high school. I went on dates with girls. But there was one girl that moved into town. Her mother worked for my aunt in a beauty salon. This was the first, last, and only time I went on a blind date. I refused. My aunt told me that one of her friends daughter moved back with her. Anyhow I ended up calling her. set up a date. When she opened the door I said to myself. Lord, let this be her. It was! It's late, I'll continue tomorrow...
"Romy" was the love of my life. We never had an argument. She put up with my baseball games, I went out dancing with her. When I twas time to move to D.C. I made a plan to go out there and get a work. When that was settled she was going to come live there. Her mother told her the only way that was going to occur was if we got married.I agreed. My aunt told me that I was going to through my life away. Against my wishes she told Romy"s mom .

The next day When I called. She was sent back to Pennsylvania, I did'nt here from her until 3 years later. My aunt called me and asked if she could give me her number. She called and asked if we could meet. Of coarse I was dating a girl at the time.( I was insecure, could never be alone.). Any way she called. told me she had business in D.C. If we could meet. I told her no. I knew if I was to have seen her , I would have never returned.Anyhow. That was my first love....

I got lucky, I was her first date when she was 16 .. Her grandfather never allowed her to date and I'd never been serious until after a year dating she got one of those long shag haircuts and it dawned on me that ''what in the world was I waiting on'' and proposed that evening .. I am blessed and thankful .. She's beautiful inside and out and doesn't need make-up .. What a woman, but she did try to henpeck me for about 7 years lol .. Talk about two becoming one flesh and I'm the jerk but she says she is LOLOL
Going on 47 years now
Way cool Bo...

About a year and a half. Her dad absolutely HATED me. I couldn't blame him. She was scary smart and had a brilliant future and ... really, couldn't say enough about her. I actually told her dad I couldn't blame him. He just kinda got exacerbated and shook his head, threw his hands up in the air. I was a mess and he knew it.

So, the rest of the story - after we broke it off, she went on to earn her PhD then about 3 years ago she got Hodgkins Lymphoma and died in 6 months. Nobody told me, you know. I actually found out about it several months later on internet stuff. I know this devastated her mom and dad.
So sad!

So....pretty simple question. The first time you got into a relationship with someone....how long were you with that person?

Me, I don't have an answer for this because I've never been in a relationship. I won't tell you why because it's nothing interesting or worth reading.

So how long were you with this person? And what did you learn or take away from the relationship....if anything?
The only relationship I have been in was with my wife. We were married a little over 14 years.

I had a few dates here and there before I was married but never a relationship.

2 years, 4 months, and 21 days

Honestly...I don't think I learned or took away anything...

Depends on who you're talking to. Some people use the two terms interchangeably. Others see dating as the phase that occurs before officially being in a relationship.

THE LETTER

We were both 15. She lived about 50 miles away and was visiting her aunt for the summer. We hit it off right away and saw each other a few times after she went back home. Between visits we would exchange letters and an occasional phone call. After about 6 months the letters arrived less frequently. One day I called her and asked it would be OK to visit her that day. She said that she was now interested in another boy. So that was that. Actually by that time it was a relief to have the relationship end.

A few months after my first relationship ended she wrote a letter saying that she was now interested in me once again but by that time I was seeing a local girl and could now care less about her. I threw her letter away.

The second relationship didn't work out either thank God and ended after about 8 months because she was now interested in my best friend. Instead of moping around I joined the US Air Force for a change of venue. During training the girl from my second relationship wrote me a letter too saying that maybe she made a mistake from dumping me. I threw that letter away too.

She ended up marrying my best friend. I saw him a few years later. He was in the process of divorce. Said he was sorry about stealing my girl. I told him that he actually did me a favor and no apology was necessary. I gave him my condolences.

Later, having gotten married myself I found a letter that my wife wrote. The problem was it was not written for me but for another man. She had been cheating on me for the last couple years. I threw that letter away too. Shortly after the divorce I packed some stuff in my car and left Michigan for Florida.

"Take a letter Maria,
Address it to my wife.
Daddy won't be coming home,

Gonna start a new life."

First relationship lasted maybe about 3 weeks or so. As for what i learned, take time to learn a person before getting into a relationship with them on that level. Eye candy is nice, but not all candy is good candy if that makes any type of sense... Substance before the visuals lol.

The thing about the eye candy actually makes a lot of sense to me. Some guys learn the hard way and often there is a price to pay.

For me, Dating is Not being in a relationship with that person - call it “courting“ in oldschool terms. It’s the part before you both choose to be an “official couple“.

It could mean differently for someone else though, so I’d be interested to know what their definition would be.

6 years on n off. Married 1 yr. Without the Lord in a relationship or marriage it’s hard to succeed in a marriage. In anything in life. God bless

Im not even gonna mention STDS. Oh I just did.
Well let me just say...HIV and other viruses are still around. They dont just magically disappear. So if you are going to be in a 'relationship' where its likely you are going to share spit or some other bodily fluid...this is how it spreads....

hmm ok well courting or dating lasts just as long as the date lasts, so, it could be a couple of hours. after that you both have to go home...and NOT to each others homes...unless you invite them to stay the night, the week, or the month. I cant imagine having someone over for a more than a few months though.
