Correct. It does not say that in greek. It says that in old translations in English.

    What is the Gospel?

You literally quoted your own post, and then replied: Okay, but that is still not the answer to my question.

    What is the Gospel?

And as if it weren't nutty enough to be told I was recommending sin, now you are arguing...WITH YOURSELF!

Yes. Correct. In that place it is referring to a man who is to be an overseer not practicing polygamy. But it is not correct that the entire passage refers only to husbands, or men. As someone pointed out earlier, if we are to be that legalistic, there may be NO single or unwed overseers.

No...the subject of what paul is saying is overseers. He is talking of the...office? of overseer. You would not title the passage: about husbands. You would title the passage: about overseers. Now within the subject of overseers, he does mention that they should not practice polygamy, but the...

What does it mean to live holy?

None of us has complete understanding. It's okay to discuss this and help each other with the verses we aren't remembering to add to our equation/understanding. I often change how I think about some things or aspects from the time I begin in a thread with you guys to the time the thread ends...

What does it mean to live holy?

    I didn't say it was...

And that's the danger of the letter without the spirit of the word. Try to fit THAT in with Paul saying it's better to not marry! The logical illogical conclusion is that it's best not to marry BUT if you don't you cannot be an overseer! We go wrong everytime we try to make a new system of...

What does it mean to live holy?

Yes. The Holy Spirit IS the power I was speaking of. Are you pulling my leg? Or do you REALLY think I was recommending continuing in sin? What part of what I said were you saying would get me in hot water?
  10. S

    woman preaachers

Yes. But the result is either male, female, or nongender specific.

What does it mean to live holy?

You think I have said men should continue deliberately sinning...? No! I am saying we receive power that KEEPS us from continuing on in deliberate sin! I'm a bit flummoxed that you think I am recommending the continuation of sin...

What does it mean to live holy?

To do your best to obey commands is the error of the foolish galatians who thought they could finish (by trying their best) what was begun in the Spirit with power.

What does it mean to live holy?

You are called to the obedience of trust/faith in HIM. This is what brings victory over sin. (Not perfection, but increasing victory.) The gospel is not to do your best to obey His commands. The gospel is believe/have faith/trust and you will receive power for a changed life.

Paul was being very specific. He knew greek.

It is easiest to refer you back to posting #82, trofimus. Overseer - nongender specific. Husband of one wife - gender specific Then Paul continues on again in nongender specific. Then he goes gender specific again concerning women.

It is not the case with the word "husband." That is correctly translated.

So the dispute is not over places where the original greek was referring to a man only or to a woman only. The dispute is over places in which it was non gender specific in the greek but the English translation does not convey the intent of the greek. In English, to convey non gender specific...
  18. S

    woman preaachers

Yes, that is correct in English. Greek is another matter. Greek is very specific, with a noun being masculine or feminine or non gender specific.

So, trofimus, what would you say to someone who came in here and said that it originally said "man" in our translations and so this means women cannot be followers/disciples of Jesus? You would say that it had not been translated as well as possible and that the original greek word that was...

I agree. But it was originally translated from the greek as "man." It has now been revised in many translations.
