Before I spoke/prayed in tongues, I started going to an assembly of God church because I wanted a miracle and I knew they happened there. I didn't want tongues, and I admitted it. Eventually tho I decided I did want it but they didn't come right away. I did get a couple other gifts at that time tho, but still no tongues. After really praying hard for it, I Got One word. Then eventually a few phrases, but I haven't pursued it at all. I always got my Holy Spirit highs after spending 4-5 hours in a prayer meeting once a week, and spending an hour or so worshiping the Lord to music before starting on my prayer list. Always think, oh yeah, I need to pray in the spirit when I 'put on my armour', but it just doesn't occur to me after that until reocently. But I have done neither of these things for several years, but immersed in God Word instead. I wasn't reading much all that time. I really didn't understand the importance of it. Sometimes when my husband is gone, I am literally reading it all day. He doesn't get involved in the things of the Lord really. I go to church and read without him. He lets me read for hours in another room while he sits in front of the TV.
Well, that is my story of it.

As far as the naysayers in these threads, those animal noises you see or hear about are NOT of God. Satan CAN get into those meetings probably to scare people who aren't familiar with it. I came into the aog just after the pastor cracked down on the service being 'taken over'so to speak. I don't know what they were like at all, I just know he was sick of being pointed at by others. Yes, SOME people fake things, too. But I go to the Salvation army right now, God put me there. Based solely on scripture. Which scripture clearly points out that private tongues are in there. I just don't understand why some people so vehemently refute that. Just say, NO, I don't want that instead of arguing about it which there is no scriptural bases to do so. You can't ignore Paul said he did it. I have NO problems with people who do not or choose to do not. That is almost my whole church.

Let me guess, you are into cessationism? You are free to do as you wish in your free will but you do so opposed to the things of God. This mindset quenches the Lord, and grieves Him. You, yourself, have gifts residing in you hardly even touched. If only you would believe, you could edify those around you. Your doctrine limits your service.
I'm into biblical truth. My doctrine is biblical and honors the Lord not me.

Scripture teaches that three gifts ended as these were sign gifts given for the Jews.

What is grievous is folks running about espousing fantasy as moving of the Holy Spirit all the while covering their unbelief in Gods word.

the great thing is we do not all have to agree with the topic :) it is ok ... opinionated, unscriptural and confrontational is also a language of the immature, ignorant and unlearned let them be :)
We do have a responsibility to believe the bible. We are admonished to live according to what the bible teaches.

What you are espousing is it's ok for Pentecostals and Charismatics to act contrary to Gods word as long as they are unlearned and ignorant.

That is like saying that it's ok for pastor so and so not to believe that Jesus is God incarnate as long as he believes he's saved.

Ok, this is about tongues again.
This question is for tongue speakers, tho, so maybe not so contentious.

I speak in tongues a little hear and there. God has really had me glued to His Word these last two years as foremost of anything at all in my life. The tongues only comes out sometimes when I am praying for somebody, or occasionally in praise and worship at church.

Anytime I try to do anything different spending time with Him, He directs me back to reading instead.

That can be a blessing depending on how we view.... new revelations coming from God that today cannot be added to prophecy.. Resisting new prophecy today is where the blessing comes from possibly why He directs you back to reading prophecy instead?
.
I guess I was curious about how much you all speak in tongues, and what is the extent of it. Meaning lots of words, or not so much. I only have a few phrases that come out.

I would think trying to understand the purpose for tongues and what it is that defines what a tongue is needed in order to generate some sort of harmony. .

It’s not the number of words but more the proper manner of spirit. We can see the gift is not attributed as coming from a work of Peter who spoke as he always did his own dialect.

But tongues is used as a direct new revelation coming from God which added to the scriptures as one of the many manners he used to add to His word while he was still performing that work . . All tongues are revelations from God and not after any man in that way.

While the scriptures define that tongues are designed and prophesied ahead of time to the rebellious natural man unbelieving Jew , that puts his faith in that which is seen (Jewish flesh)as in this case with Peter... some unbelieving Jews did not hear the word of God in their own dialect and mix it with faith (the unseen eternal ) .

Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.(the rebellious)

The purpose was for the rebellious that rebelled against his words of prophecy (the word of God, scriptures) by adding to it,

In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the LORD.Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but "prophesying" serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. 1Co 14:21-25

We find at the same kind of prophecy, as that which is revealed by the new revelations found in the Bible in which we had in part up until the book of Revelation, the last chapter.

Today we have the whole will of God with no law missing. . This means that tongues as one of the manners in which Christ did add are now no longer referred to as coming from God.

But rather the father of lies who is still trying to deceive men to believe God is still bringing new revelations even though along with that kind of idealism comes a strong delusion from God so that they can continue to believe God is still bringing new revelations .Therefore violating the final warning in the perfect or complete book of prophecy. Up until then tongues was a valid source of new revelations.

In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the LORD.Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:2Th 2:9

Tongues were present in the early NT church as an evidence to the presence of the Holy Spirit and this was to witness to the Jews present that it was the same Holy Spirit they witnessed at Pentecost.

Prophecy is a different matter as prophecy came not through tongues. Prophecy came through the proclamation of the OT scriptures teaching from them that Jesus was the promised Messiah. The prophets agreeing with the prophets. Scripture came through the pen of inspiration by a limited number of men of God's choosing.

Please honor the OP's request in asking people about their experiences and not derail this thread...there is a tongues thread that people can talk about whatever else they want to discuss.
Since when do 'experiences only' threads get posted in Bible Discussion Forum ?

Since when do 'experiences only' threads get posted in Bible Discussion Forum ?

It started way before you talked about your experience with the Lord when you got saved and I'm sure it will continue on as other people give their experiences with the Lord. Go ahead and derail the thread all you desire as it has already been derailed and I am not going to respond anymore to your "baiting"......have a great day...Bless you!

lol sometimes it even comes out unexpected with me (a few words), I usually use it when I do prayers, I start with the Lords prayer, praising and then with my own words special occasions like prayers for friends and people that asked me and with that tounges come in when the holy spirit starts speaking for me in some things, sometimes i just speak in tounges while doing stuff around the house.. and in church.. some depends on the situation.
You should after you pray in tounges pray for the intepretation (thats important) because often God has a message for you and just speaking in tounges doesnt help a lot if you have no idea what is being said.

Regarding the original post, my experience is similar to that of others here. I only had a few words at first, but now (forty years later) I have "fluency" in my prayer language and can pray for hours at a time.

Regarding whether or not tongues are biblical, I think you'll see when you study I Corinthians 13 that tongues are needed in this life and will cease when perfection (heaven, redemption, glorification ... etc.) comes. Paul's point wasn't that tongues will cease, but that love is eternal and we should place more emphasis on love than the gifts of the Spirit. But the clear implication is that faith and hope are temporal whereas love is eternal, so as long as we have faith and hope we will have the gifts. That includes tongues.

The gift of tongues is real, although seriously abused/misused in the modern church. Tongues has its place, even though its been given, IMO, higher elevation than it should have..... ya know, just like discernment has been put high on the list of fleshly christians.

The gift that doesn't receive due justice because of its importance in scripture is prophecy. Pentecostals & charismatics alike don't seek this gift even though they claim Joel's prophecy of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Act 2 focuses on prophecy, not tongues. They also claim the upper room experience as tongues only when in fact they were speaking in the hearer's own language the wonderful works of God, which, BTW, is prophesying.

It's a shame the church wants to speak in an unknown tongue without interpretation that won't edify the body when they should desire to speak for God (prophesying) that edifies 100%.

Imagine if every christian would speak for God led by the Spirit..... Scripture would be fulfilled much sooner, For the Bible says when the Gospel was preached to the whole world, then the end would come.
Matthew 24:14And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

There is a devotional tongues and a public use which is as the Spirit wills and is outlined in 1 Cor 14 but you can go to the link below to read what everyone had to say about it..the unlearned part is discussed there..this OP has a different purpose....please do not derail it...

Sorry, but then why nobody in this tongues threat can give me an answer to several question i have. i am not hear for to spoil something, but we should proof the spirits, the bible says. And i have some doubtings:

Now i should believe to a movement as from God, which is established with signs, which we cant find in the bible! Falling backward, driven to laughing without stopping, driven to move and noising like animals. Where we can find this in the bible as signs from the Holy Spirit? for to receive him?
What i can find in the bible are warnings that in the last time many false prophets will come for to try misslead even the choosen one. They will do wonders and miracles! And in Matth. 7,21ff Jesus said, that there will be People who call Jesus Lord and cast out Demons in Jesus name and has done miracules deeds in Jesus Name, but they are not known from the Lord!
I cant see from the bible that the Holy Spirit is working according denominations! The conclusion is, if the revival from 1906 is from the Holy Spirit is true, that all other denominatians and doctrines are wrong!
What is your explainatian about that fact?

you must not give an anwer in this threat. But i would be glad if you would come to tongues. in acts 2 pentecost units the christians/believers. The events around 1906 and following charismatic movements splitt the christianity till today.

The argument is not that God is moving in the church. The argument is that God is not moving in the confusion and disorder of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements.

There is no agreement among those who profess these gifts as to what they are. Ecstatic utterances or actual human languages? The intoxication produced by the least of the gifts precludes any reasonable admonition from Gods word?

Is it not the same Holy Spirit that unites all believers? I do not expect any man to convince any man of biblical truth but I do contend that the Holy Spirit will bring conviction in the tender heart, the heart that truly loves and desires to serve the Lord.

The actions of the Pentecostal and Charismatic churches testify against their holiness and purity before the Lord. The very things that Paul was rebuking the Corinthian church about is common place and even sought after in the modern church.

God does not operate outside of His word. If it's not biblical don't do it.

Roger
here is the thing if you are going to paint all Pentecostals / charismatic with the same brush please do that is your opinion. But I would not paint all Baptist by that of "Westbro Baptist". The topic is not the Denominations you have labeled here :) you can do that; but it is your opinion.

No, I am not espousing anything. and you are building a straw-man as it seems you like to do and that ok :). The origin of this post was not about the issue you have brought up which many have pointed it out to you, I was actually on your side by saying it is ok for one not to agree. That was it. You now want to read into the idea that I am now in someway saying:

"that it's ok for pastor so and so not to believe that Jesus is God incarnate as long as he believes he's saved."

not at all what I believe the Bible says in 1 cor chapter 12, 13, 14 is the these Gifts are of the " Holy Spirit " distributed by HIM for the Body of Christ to Edify comfort , and lift up. And that The Same Holy Spirit empowered in the Old Testament, empowered in the Gospels and empowered in the early church in Acts and empowered the Gentiles and HE is empowering today. your point too makes me laugh because 1Cor 12:2-3 tells us you do not have the Spirit of God if you do not believe Jesus is God. Bible all bible

It's very simple. I have read the NT and I cannot find anything that resembles what those in the Pentecostal or Charismatic movement claim to be God produced tongues.

If we are good stewards of Gods word ought we not to endeavor to correct error?

For the cause of Christ
Roger

Well you may not be able to find it but it is there in context as the passages have outlined them in Acts 2 1 cor 12, 13, 14 and my others. correcting error ? or what you do not agree with? because the Gifts of the Spirit are recorded and no where does it say they are done away with. The greek is clear they were langagues and also Unlearned languages.

You were right LOL may be it is a contentious subject LOL.

If God has given you this gift then use what He has given you. I started to read through this thread but stopped so I could answer you, it was getting silly.

Use what God has given, within that gift is the promise of more. Interpretation, knowledge, and prophesy make four. Revel in it and have fun, just like we like to see our children do when we give them a gift.

We have one awesome Daddy.

Go back to the thread wolf about tongues and you will see a number of different people did give you answers. You just didn't like them. You are allowed to believe whatever you want and you were actually answered a few times in that thread so this discussion is basically useless and will serve no purpose to edify anyone. Have a great day.

I have to say that using this gift edifies the believer in personal use, as said by Paul, because it fills up with the Holy Spirit, producing the fruit of the Spirit. 'Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. 'And you will know them by their fruits.' It is another faucet where Paul commands to "be filled with the Spirit.' Something that must occur for us to be more effective witnesses, rather than looking like sour grapes. Honestly, if you have been in a charismatic setting and you leave with fruits of the Spirit evident in your life, it was definitely a God thing. It empowers the believer as a witness and brings a boldness, removes the fear of it. Stephen was soooo full of the Spirit they saw his face the face of an angel. And people DO see something different/good and attractive(in our demenor) when we are filled with the Spirit.
Also, one time I was sitting next to someone in a meeting who spoke the EXACT phrase in tongues as me.
