The term "nerd" really is relative.
My ex-husband considered himself a nerd. He wore glasses because he found contacts uncomfortable, was always reading something, was extremely intelligent, and loved video games.
But he also worked out and played a few sports because he was into healthy living. My ex-father-in-law told me that when (my ex-husband) was in high school, he tried out for a sports team and the coach laughed and made fun of him, saying he "ran funny" (implying he was gay) and assumed he was so awkward he wouldn't even get through the tryouts.
A month later this same coach made him captain of the team (even though there were guys who were older and had more experience.)
We also made a few trips to Chicago because a model scout had chosen him as a possible candidate at a convention.
You never know what you might find once the person puts down the book/video game console and introduces himself.
Agreed....nerd can be very relative and can honestly have two different extremes. I'm gonna show y'all the other end of the nerd spectrum.
Though I may not play video games to my heart's content, I am so very nerdy (though I actually have REALLY good eyesight so I don't need glasses. Last time I checked they were near perfect). I pretty much fit the stereotype for nerdy girls on those TV shows.
I'm REALLY good at math, and somewhat enjoy science, I even help kids with their math at school as long as it's not geometry, and I'll help the science teacher do science projects with the lower grade kids because they're just that fun (yeah and I'm good with kids, so I may or may not go into teaching when I graduate).
Like some nerds, I have to have a "special" diet (dairy-free, gluten-free, low-soy, can't do much meat...), I have almost straight A's (what isn't a high A is a High B almost low A), I'm kinda chubby like some nerdy girls (it's funny how nerd girls and guys are stereotyped. The nerd girls are always chubby and the guys are stick thin), and...I'm socially awkward (oh and can't forget the acne!!)!
Then I'm a music nerd. This means I could tell you the Seven Basic Major Scale Modes, the different minor scales, and what it means when a certain chord is dominant or sub-dominant. I read music for piano, guitar, and violin, though I'm not very good at violin at this point. Oh! And I can spout of the Circle of 5th's to ya from memory if you'd like.
