Hey Everyone,

I often consult with younger people to keep up on today's modern "vocabulary." Recently, I asked a nephew and his girlfriend what "Pick Me" means, as I've been seeing it thrown around.

A quick Google search says:

"A Pick-Me is slang for someone who desperately seeks attention or approval - usually from a specific group or gender - by acting disingenuously or demeaning their own peers to seem "different" or superior.

* Pick-Me Girl - A woman or girl who belittles other women, rejects traditional feminine interests, or boasts that she is "not like other girls" just to win male validation.

* Pick-Me Guy - A man or boy who relies on performative emotional vulnerability, self-deprecation, or feigned sensitivity to manipulate or win the attention of women.

* Pick-Me Employee - Anyone trying to hard to win earn attention, win favor, or impress a dominant social group."

I was thinking of this in humorous, not serious terms after participating in @legion's awesome "Ok, I'm Now Ready" thread. We finally came to the hilarious conclusion that the secret to being a "Pick Me" (the thing that makes you PRIME dating material) is OBVIOUSLY -- owning a Keurig!!

And so, I was just thinking that it might be pretty funny if we all listed 3 more OBVIOUS reasons why we should all be seen as THE Ultimate Pick-Me Guy, Girl, or even Employee!

* What are 3 OBVIOUS things that make you unique -- and put you at the head of the pack?

* For Singles, what 3 things would OBVIOUSLY make someone interested in dating you? (Things you own? "Special" skills or talents, etc.?)

For example -- is that vintage bottlecap collection just BOUND to impress? Are your grilled cheese-making skills beyond that of any mere mortal?

* For the Marrieds, what 3 things OBVIOUSLY made your spouse fall in love with you and unable to let you go? (Maybe it was the way you silently passed gas in the car and yet somehow convinced them it wasn't you!)

* All other options are also open -- What makes YOU a Pick-Me Employee -- or anything else? (Sports teams, Keeper of the Remote, Grill Master, etc.)

While answers can be serious, the intent is that we all "tell on yourselves" with several funny and ridiculous "skills" or "possessions" we all have -- that we think other people should (laughably) admire us for!

To give you an example, follow this format if you like (but you don't have to -- feel free to answer in your own way!):

"I'm a Pick-Me (fill in the blank... Guy, Girl, Employee, Coach, Volunteer, HOA President, etc!) BECAUSE (then list your 3 reasons!!)

I'll go first!

I'm (OBVIOUSLY) a Pick-Me Girl BECAUSE:

1. My sock-sorting skills are unlike any other!

Never mind that all my socks are either white or black, but hey... Some are longer and some are shorter so NOT ONLY can I arrange socks by color, but I sort them by seasons as well! (Who wants to wear long socks on a hot day?)

So if you want the best-looking sock drawer this side of the Mississippi -- I said I could sort socks; I didn't say I could spell -- PICK ME!!

(When you post, you DON'T have to explain your reasons, but you know me -- I have to over-explain EVERYTHING! :D)

Actually this moves along nicely into Reason #2:

2. I over-explain and over-communicate EVERYTHING!!

I strive for perfection here, so it's simply not good enough for me to just present an idea -- NOOOO! On a good day, you'll be handed a page-long, typed explanation. On a "Gee, I'm Feeling Extra Thoughtful" day, you'll be handed a 20-page (front and back) dissertation of what I'm thinking about, why I'm thinking it, and the llllooooonnnnggg story -- from 1982, or was it 1985, and everything in between-- that made me think of it!

So if you like THOROUGH, and I DO mean THOROUGH communication, PICK ME!!

3. I like to be prepared!

While other preppers stock USEFUL things like food, water, and batteries (bah humbug,) I happen to have an entire clear plastic container's worth of toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash.

While an apocalypse is scary, we all know that the WORST apocalypse is one in which everyone has halitosis, and so I am proud to say, I am prepared for most any bad breath emergency!!

So if YOU value dental hygiene (and a collection of products that 4 out of 5 dentists recommend,) PICK ME!!!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be married before the end of next week! I mean, if ALL THIS doesn't lure in Mr. Right, I'm not sure what will!!

And now, I want to hear from YOU!!!

* What kind of "Pick-Me" ARE YOU, and WHY??!

Ok its a coffee machine.

1. I can make a cup of tea. Not just tea bag in hot water. I mean actual looseleaf tea, in china tea cups. The little ones without the handles.

2. I can wow you with my English Language conversational skills if you can understand my Kiwi accent. Over a cup of tea.

3. I own a wombat. She's 3 kilos and her name is Matilda. I got her imported from Australia, so she's the only wombat around for several kilometres. None of my friends have wombats, that I know of. I am teaching her how to be a kiwi. So far, her burrowing skills are excellent.

I'm sorry. What is a keurig? Am I idiot for asking. I never heard of it before.
I have to find out first or I'll never be able to answer the 20+ questions required of me in this thread.

You answered perfectly, Lanolin!

Other women might have English and tea, but a wombat???

This MOST definitely makes you a Pick Me -- and maybe more so than anyone else in the thread! 😁

What? How is that saying "Pick me"? All of my emotional vulcanability and self-reciprocation is real I tell ya. It's real!

Ok let's see the 3 things that scream pick me for a date:

I have an 11 year old car that's rather scratched up and dented so you know I'm very committed (to getting my money's worth out of cars at least).

I'm a walking Bible concordance and can tell you the most entertaining (and mostly accurate version) of a Bible story you've ever heard. Also good for having random discussions about obscure passages. Might make you feel like a stupid neophyte but if you're interested in learning stuff I'm your best bet.

I'm really smart and learn a lot by reading. The internet accidentally taught me how to make homemade chloroform and how to use battery acid to grow berries. It's also taught me how to cook tastier food and some strategies to keep my dog from trying to savage people she doesn't know.

Also there are my extensive collections of tea and board games you've never heard of, as if you needed any more reasons to pick me.

Wow... Yeah, no, that sounds way too much like way too much w*rk. Forget it.

Oh... Yeah that's more like it. I can do that.
And now, I want to hear from YOU!!!

* What kind of "Pick-Me" ARE YOU, and WHY??!
1: Care-less. Like, you don't have to take care of me much. I hear a lot of married/widowed women complaining about how much care their men need - cooking, laundry, etc. But the more you leave me alone, the happier I'll be. I can cook my own food and you'd BETTER NOT mess with my laundry cause I know exactly how I want it done. I'll remember to take my own pills and I can dress myself in colors and patterns that don't clash.

2: Easy-going. As long as you don't mess with my stuff, you can do whatever you want. Plant flowers around the house, hang pictures on the walls, get a new couch or throw out that old recliner... Just don't mess with my chair or move my keys and I'm fine. And don't ask me to maintain the flower bed. That's your project, not mine.

3: RAM - Random Access Memory. I can probably give you 743 songs that fit that topic, or find a really good recipe (and cook it myself) if you're hungry for a certain kind of food, or quote a comic strip that perfectly fits what you're talking about, or find a lot of Bible verses that mention the same thing you just said... I'm handy at parties.

Ok married so...sheesh...who knows how this landed.... I think for me it goes like this...the first time she came over when I opened the door, before I could even say more then hi...both of my basset hounds escaped out the front door and I had to chase them down and carry one back..-
it must have been my muscles glistening in the sun

The second is the first date, she didn't realize until much later that the martinis she made had a smear on the handwritten page and she was completely making them with 2 parts alcohol..which then she turns around and showed me a catalog of jewelry she was selling...so the "pick me" part was me buyng a couple chains, a ring and bracelet i couldnt afford...

The 3rd was probably when I over committed to an 8 hour long tube float down a river that i turned down to a point of never being asked again... but i couldn't swim...and at one point i thought I could drown if i relieve myself, hanging on to the innertube for dear life... until she told me just to stand up....the water came to my knees.....so yeah definitely a charmer ....LOL

OK here are my first 3 pick me's

1. I can talk to animals. (they just don't talk back)

2. I can fly a plane (in case there's a zombie apocalypse).

3. I can cook a mean plate of spaghetti.

That's cool but I would put the spaghetti in a bowl and eat it with chopsticks.

I'm not sure about the zombie apocalypse though. Is that in the Bible? I'd be on the side of the plants, so not sure why you'd need a plane...

The Walking Dead was a hit tv series from several years ago about a zombie apocalypse. You could use a plane to fly someplace away from the zombies, like Alaska.

I prefer a bowl too, but I don't use chopsticks. I actually don't use spaghetti noodles. I use elbow noodles, but call it spaghetti. :D

I think the key difference -- for men or women -- is whether or not it's sincere. I remember in school, there was a popular boy who was never quite the jock, but the jocks and cool kids kept him around because he was funny and had popular parents.

His way of getting girls to notice him was acting sad and depressed, which would usually lead a circle of girls sitting by him at lunch asking him what was wrong. The thing is, nothing was ever really wrong (or at least he never had any explanations.) Maybe he was just waiting for the right girl to ask him, I don't know.

When I attended some event after we'd all grown up -- and he was actually doing the same thing there -- it was a big lesson to me about people who use these kinds of feelings for attention. (Not to dismiss actual sadness or depression -- I'd just seen this happen way too many times.)

For what it's worth, I've never been attracted to the strong, stoic type -- and there's nothing wrong with being that way.

But for me, I'm always drawn to the sincere, expressive guy who's good at communication -- and isn't afraid to laugh at himself.

I realized after I posted that, that you meant it was a slang meaning of pick-me guy. :D
