And in those customs the Groom comes for his bride (or brides). It was not against the law to marry more than one woman.
The custom was that the young unmarried friends of the Bridegroom were to wait until the announcement was made and join the procession with lights. None of these were the bride. She was always at another location and given to the Bridegroom by her father.

Jewish men did not marry a whole group of virgins. That did not happen. Didn't we already have this discussion?

A simple Google search should lead you to plenty of resources to show you that none of these are the actual bride. I won't keep arguing about it. It's not up for debate.

No, the father only decided when the Groom should go get his bride. The father didn't go get her and give her to the groom.

Many Jewish men had multiple wives, usually just rich men and/or Kings. Jesus is also a king and is marrying a huge amount of people. It makes sense that in his parable about his second coming and marriage that he has multiple brides.

A Jewish bride in Israel had no idea what day or hour when her bridegroom would return for her to take her to the wedding. The groom himself didn’t know when he’d go to claim his bride because only his father knew when the time was right. In the parable the groom comes to his brides just as the custom was in Israel. Never did the groom come for guests or friends etc. His job was to go directly to his bride or brides and personally escort them to the wedding and that is what is described in the parable. A very simplistic Google search will lead you to this.

It just means at that time it's too late to try to get oil. Those that have it need all they have, and going out to buy more ios useless because they had to be ready with the right amount of oil right at that time and the foolish didn't. They also were foolish from the beginning rather than becoming foolish.
i meant, we all agree oil represents the Spirit, right? so why can't the wise share the oil, for fear they won't have enough for themselves? the apostles laid their hands on believers and they were filled with the Spirit.
is this saying something about cessation of certain sign gifts and power?

Those small refill jars were an everyday common item. The listeners would have understood that they were a one lamp refill. They could not risk their own lamps going out during the procession.

The five foolish virgins are "Unsaved"

You arent saved unless your sealed by the Holy Spirit, and this seal is until the day of redemption Eph 1:13, 4:30

Ephesians 1:13KJV
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 4:30KJV
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

The scripture is very clear, the five foolish virgins were never saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit, the Lord never knew them "Unsaved"

Matthew 25:11-12KJV
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Yes, you got me there. A simple Google search is very likely to turn up posts from unreliable sources where people say things out of ignorance. I should have said most scholarly commentaries for the past several hundred years would tell you about this custom and how they were the friends of the Bridegroom and Bride and joined the procession and were not the bride. The notes and bibliographies in these scholarly books will cite the resources for where the custom occurs in ancient Jewish literature. That would be the correct way to find the facts. Hopefully a proper Google search could get you there. Maybe something like "Ancient Jewish Literature recording Ancient Jewish Wedding customs" or "documented evidence that the 10 virgins in Jesus Parables were friends of the Bridegroom" eventually you should be able to find the oldest records in extant that describe these ancient Jewish wedding customs that Jesus was referring to. Or pull out a Bible Dictionary, or a New Testament Customs at the time of Christ book and they should have the resources cited as to where this has been recorded in ancient literature.

It would be a good discussion if people were to find that data and post it to support their views. I will see what I can find when I have time. I am currently studying for a class on 1 Corinthians, so I can't spend too much time on side research projects.

Yes, you got me there.

Yous till seem to be ignoring that the Bridegroom went directly to get his bride which in this case is multiple brides. He did not go to other females he wasn't going to marry.

Gill:
be likened unto ten virgins; to "virgins" for quality; being betrothed ones to Christ

The 5 foolish virgins weren't betrothed to Christ a false claim, you deny to acknowledge the presented truth below (Why)?

that doesn't say they have oil. it says they have lamps.

a wick will burn for a short time without oil.
nope
Their lamps that had oil ran out of oil

" our lamps have gone out"

Clear as a bell. It reads just like what it says.

None of them are the bride in the parable. They are friends of the Bridegroom. This is a parable taken from the common custom of a Jewish Wedding celebration.

The friends were to wait until they heard the announcement of the coming Bridegroom and join in a procession of participants invited to walk behind him with lamps lit as they entered into a wedding feast/party and if they did not have a lamp lit they were not allowed to join or enter into the party.

None of them were the bride which was given to the Bridegroom in a different ceremonial custom than this one being explained in the parable.

This is one of those excellent examples where reading commentaries will give people the background information that is missing from the text. When it was written everyone understood the custom and so it was not explained. But unless you read about ancient Jewish wedding ceremonies from another source besides the bible you will not know this information. The next time someone says they don't believe in reading commentaries ask them to explain this parable and see how many different interpretations you get based on lack of knowledge.

Some have thought that Jesus was talking about Bridegroom coming to marry 10 virgins at once but had to settle for 5.

The parable is not about being ready for a long wait and not thinking that you have time to prepare at the last minute.

I often think about this. I have lived long enough to see it happen and know that I will continue to see it happen and need to preach this message using this parable so that church goers will awake to the sober reality of the danger they are in when they live such compromising lives thinking that they will "get right" later, but later never comes.

I don't know if there are more compromisers in church who are tolerating sin today or if I am just more aware of it.

I think the parable is a true picture of who it will be when the Lord returns. I used to think that it was a warning to help change the outcome, but the outcome is going to be like this and being aware of that helps us to be ready.
In Jewish custom, is it mandated that ALL “friends” of the Bridegroom have to be virgins?

Or that EVERYONE invited to a Jewish wedding MUST be a virgin?

No, it is the Bride that MUST be a virgin.

This is a parable with secret meaning....hidden from those that are prideful in their human intellect that trust in their human reasoning.

I have been preaching the word 35 years...
You promote things which have no Biblical basis. I wonder how many you have led astray?

With teachings like this:

You can't have God (who is a Spirit) without having an OPPOSITE Eternal Spirit also.
So, no one really created Evil, it is eternal just like God, it's the opposite of God. .
Telling people God cannot exist unless something aside from
and opposing Him exists also. Eternally self existent also

There is not a ghost of a hint that the 5 foolish get to lay down their lives for the Lord and go to heaven. Not a ghost of a hint.
The ghost of a hint is that all 10 are virgins. Virgins are Believers in Christ but, not all Believers are the Bride.

This will upset many but, it is true.

but there is no 'extra oil' in the parable.
the foolish maidens had no oil ((Matthew 25:3)) -- not 'insufficient oil' but no oil at all.
the wise maidens had none to split with them ((Matthew 25:9)) -- they have what is sufficient for them, but not 'extra'

we're all agreed that the oil represents the Spirit, right?
so the foolish did not have the Spirit, at all. i think that part is pretty clear - and Christ, the Groom, says He does not know them ((Matthew 25:12))

it's a more difficult question for me to answer why the wise can't "share" their oil/Spirit. what does that mean?
Maybe it means that no one can ride on someone else's Salvation...
You must be born again , we cannot borrow Salvation to get us into the Kingdom...
Many believe because their parents are believers , this gives them a pass to , just a thought...

Some spiritual virgins will cease to be virgins through the Apostasy. I believe that is exactly what is being taught in the parable.

I agree, the parable surrounds works, just as your explanation of salvation on the family plan doesn't cut it

As we clearly see, the works of maintaining virginity and virtue is useless, without salvation through Jesus Christ's Finished Work On Calvary

If so then what should they have done to make sure they did not "run out" of the Holy Spirit? What does having brought an extra container of oil translate into? What does that mean? Praying always?
The ones with extra oil are in love with Jesus Christ, not just saved but they keep their passionate first love stirred.

The others do not stir up the Holy Spirit within them....their flame goes out. They lost their first love and were not ready at His coming.

Jesus Christ is going to marry those that LOVE Him. Many are saved but, few LOVE Him.
