I was going to be set-up with a woman once, but when I was told she had nicer hair than me, I called it off. Competition is not a good way to begin a date!!!

And by "set up", I don't mean framed for a crime. ;)

Most of us have probably experienced the whole "Oh, you should meet ______! You'd be great together!" But, have any of you actually ever followed through with that?
Yes. I was chatting with a buddy on facebook who was always urging me to "put myself out there," whatever that means - I guess that meant go out in the dating scene, ugh. I was joking around with what I called his "harem" of facebook friends and asked "what about this one" after reading some of the things on her profile. The two of them had met on "Plenty of Fish" and went out a couple of times, but didn't continue dating. The next thing I know. He contacted her and mentioned some of the nice things I said, also mentioning that I would contact her within a few days! The jerk!

I remember one of my mom's friend tried to set me up with his gay son because i might change him. @___@

I was only "set up" once, in the eleventh grade. A friend told me a young lady had asked him for my number. I told him it was okay to give it to her. We talked for a good bit before actually going out. That helped ease the anxiety, especially since I hadn't been on a date before. I was a late bloomer. :)

Anyway, we went out and things were going quite well. But shortly thereafter, my family moved from Oklahoma to North Carolina. While I was too infatuated to realize the futility in trying to maintain a long distance relationship at that age and during those times, the 70s, she understood and made it clear that it was over.

I don't think one should take any options off the table. You never know how God might be planning to bring that special someone to you. But I would recommend anyone getting "set up" try to get to know as much as possible about the one they're being set up with before going along with it, perhaps some extensive chatting and a background check. :) And that's especially true for women. People will often say how great someone is that they want to hook you up with, even if they're a psychotic stalker. Just go for it. And make sure to pack some pepper spray and a taser. :)

Yes, and both times it was a FAIL. I mean I appreciated the effort but nobody knows better what I look for in a boyfriend than myself. So everybody has an idea of what is best for you and I'm sure that has worked for some people but so far it hasn't for me.

And Rachel, you seem like a really awesome person and you should totally try and see if that guy you are interested in is also interested in you... you never know it could lead into something great. :)

Aw, OceanGrl, you're kind. :) I'll interact with guys normally, but when it comes to being bold about that kind of stuff...I'm gun shy with it. But that's a whole other thread. ;)

I can relate, although, I think I'd be bolder now-a-days if I was interested in someone. Well, maybe, it's easier said than done I'm thinking... lol Well, I hope that if the opportunity arises, that either you or him will step up to the plate and go for it. :) You never know, either one of you might get that split second fearlessness. I like when that happens, although, it doesn't happen often for me. lol

Thankfully, I've never been set-up with anyone but I imagine I would've been many times over if I were female (women seem to get the rough end of the stick with this sort of thing).

Rachel, you're amazing. Your heart for God, your heart for people. Your patience and kindness. Beautiful. :)

After reading everyone else's dating horror stories, and remembering a few of my own, I'm thinking I really WOULD rather be set up for a crime than on a date...

Both events seem to have the same consequences, after all.

Serving time!!! ;)

A friend of mine and I would always go to these Christian meetings for young adults. And she would always set me up with guys she use to date. The problem was, the guys always thought they were with her.

I did go on a blind date once, just once.

Within 5 minutes of meeting her, I was already planning my escape.
I took her to a restaurant a block from her house, so that after dinner... I could get rid of her really fast.
: )

Nope. Never been set up....I see an ongoing theme here that a lot of people's mothers have tried that game. The last I heard from her on that subject was when my aunt said she could picture me with "a nice black man'' and my mother's response was a disdainful ''pfft. Not like she'd know what to do with a man anyway.".......So I suspect I won't have an interference from her anytime soon. lol :p

(Timeline for those that don't know: 2/14/12 I was served divorce papers & at this time I am still married, though it is not because either of us is looking to work things out...and the church elders recommend that I proceed with the divorce she initiated.)

Last summer a couple from my Bible class at church had me over for dinner... and when I walked in the door it was all or a sudden, "Hey, have you met my cousin?" I promptly found an opportunity to follow "Mrs. Cupid" into the kitchen where I tearfully explained that while I was complimented, that I was still quite married, and that this was all terribly awkward. This cousin was her closest friend of all, but conversation was a major trip to Dullsville anyway. Big compliment, but no thanks... and BTW, I'm still married. I wasn't bothered by the fact that her cousin is a midget. I just figured it was a compliment that she thought I was cool enough to set up with her best friend and mature enough to not be bothered by that, ahem, small detail. Guess she was right, but A)not interested, and B)not available.

Saturday a friend leaned in conspiratorially and asked, "SeatBelt, are you yet a divorced person?" I replied explaining the current state of limbo, to which he countered, "Well, as soon as you are, you let me know, and you need to come to One, just One service at the church where my girlfriend is a worship leader." She piped up and said that it would have to be the Rock & Roll Service, not the traditional... I walked away shaking my head wondering who "she" is that they have in mind. heaven forbit it be one of those churches where a single man over such and such an age gets ripped to shreds by all the potential MRS's.

I'm not naming any names, but if I was date-able there's some CC Ladies I might cotton to the notion of being set up with! :o

Honestly, I think I'm too burned to use the stove again. It'ld probably take someone setting me up to get me back out there.
