Hopefully the American Red Cross will be on the scene soon. It does say in the bible that in the times of the end there will be earthquakes in diverse places. It is good of you to volunteer to collect the funds. Bottled water will be one of the relief supplies needed. I don't drink water often but when I do I prefer Dasani.

having been born and lived for several years in CA, an earthquake of 4.2 is something like a mild sneeze.

p.s. i can still remember like yesterday watching the much hyped "dream series" of oakland and san fran, and how the 1989 bay area earthquake disrupted game 3. i was living in san jose, working. since i graduated from high school two years early, i lived with my grandparents until i was 18 before moving to NYC.

1989 was quite an exciting year for the cali bay area. and gypsygirl. : )

p.p.s. i still haven't quite forgiven lynx for his nasty comment about disney being all that. i grew up going to disneyland, and have been there several times since. and i loooooved the california adventure park, especially that cool ride that simulates hang gliding over the state. anyone else???

olerica, i noticed that it looked a little odd too! after a little scrutiny, i decided that it's because:

1) men have a shorter leg-to-torso ratio than women. i believe it was in my anatomy (?) or art class that men's legs are usually about 3/8 of their total height, vs. women's 1/2 of total height.

2) the contrasting pants and shirt accent this fact by disrupting the overall vertical line.

you've probably also heard the advice often given to women who want to appear taller (and thinner) to match their top and skirt (or pants) color, as the monochromatic effect emphasizes overall length by creating an unbroken vertical line--akin to a an optical illusion.

this is further evidenced by the fact that i've always noticed that when driving a vehicle, the comfortable seat adjustment for me is always the same as a guy who is a decent amount taller than me.

my first boyfriend, who was a half inch taller than me actually had need to move the seat closer to the steering wheel than i did. however, when my 6'2" boyfriend would drive my truck, he would comfortably drive the same adjustment as i did.

It's been a nice day. Really, it has been. I'm finding that learning and studying subjects I have interest in really make me feel more productive, and not like I'm just sitting around doing nothing. I learn more about me, God, and other areas. Maybe I won't do so bad in college.

oh evie, i am SO excited for you to start college! it is such an exciting time of growth and development!!!

it's hard to imagine, but there are so many exciting things that you discover about yourself when you're finally on your own, and making your own decisions for yourself. it's the beginning of so many discoveries and paths of awareness, from knowledge and learning that is vocational, but about the kind of person whom you wish to be, the manner in which you will choose to distinguish yourself, and the first time you start to do things because they're important to you, rather than pleasing your family and those around you.

you go to church, and get to start fresh from the beginning. the only things they know about you is what you share. this may sound weird to some, but for me, my family and the drama/background was something i always felt overshadowed me. when i moved away to school, i was just "monica" and i never felt any of the scrutiny that my past or family carried.

i think women grow the most as individuals between your age and maybe 23-25 (depending upon the individual) and looking back on my own experience, it was when i kind of "grew" into my "personality". it may be hard for you to believe, but when i was going through school, most people described me as painfully shy and hard to get to know. it was when i moved away from home (and at college) that i was able to grow into my natural outgoing, playful, and extroverted personality.

and the learning!!! *insert harp sounds* it's such an exciting time of growth and possibility. where almost anything is possible, and you are limited by precious little. your professors become more like your peers, and assistant to your grown and learning, rather than the "parental figures" that we associate more with primary years.

you are definitely embarking upon the (almost undisputed) most exciting, formative and growing times of your life. and of course, i'm terribly excited for you. i can't wait to see what is next! *hugs*

i'm actually in mid/central willamette valley area. i think you posted something about a farmer's market? we have some lovely ones around here. i'm probably close enough to the coast to be among the part of the state that is supposed to fall into the pacific when the "big one" happens.

i'm also in the part of the state that is still celebrating the passing of the recreational marijuana ballot measure passing. ; p

p.s. i missed your earlier post about a pavlova, but i do know, and have even made one before. one of my girlfriends who was getting married several years ago had requested one, and i made something even martha would approve of.

believe it or not, i wasn't all that fond of it. i'm not a big meringue girl -- in fact, it was a little too sweet for me, despite the fact that i omitted part of the sugar called for in the recipe.

oh, and i'm well known for my pumpkin cheesecake around the holidays. : )

maybe my favorite dessert (or one of my favorites) is tiramisu. : ) mascarpone and ladyfingers with booze and chocolate and whipping cream? INSPIRED! : )

dang it, i tried to post a picture of my three level pumpkin cheesecake! it's not working for some stupid reason. and the time limit expired before i could fix it.

i do three layers:

a pumpkin cheesecake, a cardamom-scented vanilla cheesecake, and a layer of (what is most akin to) pumpkin pie.

it's kind of my own creation and i only make it around the holidays. and, good gravy,i am hungry now. ; p

note: i normally make it in a standard (straight edge) cheese cake pan. but in a pinch, you can reduce the recipe and make a more petite version in a regular pie pan.

but now i feel kind of bad joking about the earthquake. i really do hope everyone is alright and not too much damage was sustained.

oh wow, bandon isn't TOO far from one of my VERY VERY VERY favorite hikes, north of lincoln city called cape lookout.

have you been there? if you're not much of a hiker, it's an easy-to-moderate hike out and back in beautiful old growth forest and i'd say the best time of the year to go is around june when the rhodies are 6-9 feet tall and it's in full bloom. later in the summer, there are tons of trillium in bloom, and all kinds of other beautiful wildflowers, such as those wild irises and the view above the ocean is amazing.

oh, and it's supposed to be one of the very best places to whale watch!

it's well worth an afternoon, olerica! you should check it out. last year i hiked it and posted pictures here that made more than a couple cc'ers jealous and ready to book a flight. ; p

we just call it the "other" cheese place. ; p and for those playing at home, the first is tillamook, just down the road from bandon. ; p

one of my college roommates was from bandon. she was a fun girl, but i had to teach her how to scramble down the ivy trellis several times before she figured it out enough to not land on her kiester.

we had an 11:00 curfew on "school nights".

oh, and she was noteworthy for being the only girl in my dorm who had even bigger hair than i did. mine, while natural and due to having unrepentant and stubborn curly hair... her's mostly due to a giant can of aqua net that she blew threw every couple days. i swear, it doubled as a crash helmet.

i was always certain she was going to be the cause of my developing lung cancer, and truth be told, if i ever do develop it, i might look her up. ; p
