A worthy thing to desire.. I am assuming you are talking about peace of Mind.. If i am wrong please feel free to correct me..
The first is talking about those who work to cause conflicts to cease..
The second is talking about the sword ( His gospel message ) that causes division/ separation between people.. Lots of people who have converted to Christianity know what that some people that they formerly where friends with or even family members will shun them and they will be cut away from them like a sword cutting their ties..
So for me.. No paradox, no conflict..

You actually have to have an intimate knowledge of scripture to know both verses and what Jesus meant by stating both of them.

Now I can reconcile these things rather easily....I know scriptures well. I know what they mean and why they say what they say. It's more paradoxical than conflicting....and the real hermeneutics from these passages are extremely relevant for today.
