Postmodernism has been difficult to define because it has many faces and many degrees. For the purpose of theology, it's focus is primarily the domain of epistemology. Postmodernism is in part a rejection of the epistemology of the Enlightenment and a rejection of approaches that are positivist, rationalistic, exclusive, and certain.

Yet postmodernism has many degrees. In the first half of the last century, avant-garde thinkers argued, with great persuasiveness, that for finite human beings there can be no uninterpreted facts. In the second half of the 20th century, many extrapolated this argument to conclude that there are no facts, only interpretations. The latter is toxic insisting that we are confined to a quagmire of relativity, that all meaning is merely a result of linguistic markers that occurred in neo-Darwinism, and that there is no (e.g. zero) possibility of any objective truth.

How am I doing so far Rachel?

I think you'll find your 'avant-garde thinkers' were cultural Marxists. :)

It's Mennonite, but really we are a group of various back grounds, only a few card holding Mennonites, but enough to get their themes across. I actually gave a few sermons here, one in which I attempted to explain to them how God hates, lol...Gotta love it...

wow that suprises me, Did not think this would hit them. they are pretty strict from what I have heard! I guess no one is imune to this stuff!!

hi ellie....did they ever establish an 'Institute' in America for their fancy thinking and planning?
what was it called?
who paid for it and gave it Gov't sponsored power?

maybe i dreamed it:rolleyes:

don't know if they gave it an official name...
but they settled in at Columbia University.
from there to the University of Chicago...Stanford...UCLA.

and spread from there to every ivy league college.

idk about the gov't funding.
oh, wait! since John Dewey was a disciple, is it safe to say
every public school?
funded by the gov't. :)

There are conservative and liberal, and a mixture of both in the Mennonite Church. This postmodernism is new to the Church, and not taught, but it seems that this young college student has been hurt by Cedarville University for the injustices of the Christian fundamentalists who have been turning the college upside down. And this older guy, I think is just "out there" and maybe loosing his ability to think and reason.

My view of postmodernism? I don't have a meta-narrative by which to respond with.

Cultural Marxism- In current American politics, the term has been picked up in a sense that does not reference an analytical technique, but a conspiracy to destroy Western society and Christian religion[SUP][1][/SUP] by promoting core values as backward and obsolete. This is seen as the true purpose behind Political correctness and Multiculturalism, which are identified with Cultural Marxism[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3][/SUP]. This use is popular among American right-wingers, who see themselves in a cultural war with Marxists they assume to have subverted American institutions like schools, universities, media, entertainment industry and most mainline churches[SUP][4][/SUP].

lol got it those meddling marxists

oddly although mennonite churches tend to be very strict about practice...they are often very lax when it comes to doctrine...

marxism actually began as a modernist school of thought...it was not a product of postmodernism...though modern marxism has adapted to it pretty effectively...

Hmm. I see Revelation as God's way, reason and the 'scientific method as one step removed and Postmodernism as two steps removed thus having no improvement on the first two.

i see it differently...

revelation is God's way... modernism is the exact opposite...rejecting revelation in favor of rationalistic and materialistic 'science' and 'reason'... postmodernism is a reaction to the modernist extreme and is a step towards the middle...somewhere in between revelation and rationalism...allowing that both could be valid...but only in a subjective sense...

Yes, I agree, we have a mixture of conservatism and liberalism in the Church, is this a bad thing or a good think, some may say it provides balance.
Theological liberalism is pure poison the same poison the Serpent fed Eve,,,''Hath God said?" .

really? Many of the enlightenment scientists were christians, who used observable data , much the way the disciples were eyewitnesses. The trend has gone from truth as an objective fact e.g. eyewitnesses of the resurrection and...

'That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—(1Jn 1:1-2)

to subjective truth spawned by 18th century Pietism and still carried on in post modernism.

it is true that many of the scientists of the enlightenment were christians...but the vast majority of scientific specialists prior to the enlightenment were also christian... one of the primary changes that took place in the enlightenment was that it was no longer unacceptable for 'science' to contradict scripture...to ignore revelation...to reject the miraculous and the spiritual...and so on...

also one of the great ironies is that while many of the scientists of the enlightenment were faithful christians...a similar proportion of the theologians of the enlightenment became serial compromisers...often adopting the counter biblical notions of irreligious 'science'

premodernism...truth as objective fact revealed in scripture...
modernism...truth as objective fact contrary to scripture...
postmodernism...subjective truth including but not limited to scripture...

postmodernism (injected into Christianity) is just existentialism.

i can't know anything and i don't want to, but i want to sound cool.
and i want to follow my passions.

it's demonic.

Premodern ascribed creation to the Creator.
Enlightenment ascribed creation to the creation.
Postmodern ascribed creation to ''it's yo thang, do wot yo wanna do' :)

I would refute this,
but I'm kinda busy
waiting for Godot.

"The four archetypal personalities or the four aspects of the soul are grouped in two pairs: the ego and the shadow, the persona and the soul's image (animus or anima). The shadow is the container of all our despised emotions repressed by the ego. Lucky, the shadow serves as the polar opposite of the egocentric Pozzo, prototype of prosperous mediocrity, who incessantly controls and persecutes his subordinate, thus symbolising the oppression of the unconscious shadow by the despotic ego.......er.......uh......what?

LOL...mkay.
