I had a solo LP of his that was really quite good
John Alec Entwistle (9 October 1944 – 27 June 2002) was an English singer, songwriter, composer, musician, film and music producer. In a music career that spanned more than 40 years, Entwistle was best known as the original bass guitarist for the English rock band The Who. He was the only member of the band to have formal musical training. His aggressive lead sound influenced many rock bass players.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Who in 1990.
Entwistle's instrumental approach used pentatonic lead lines, and a then-unusual treble-rich sound ("full treble, full volume") created by roundwound RotoSound steel bass strings. He was nicknamed "The Ox" and "Thunderfingers," the latter because his digits became a blur across the four-string fretboard.
In 2011, he was voted as the greatest bass guitarist of all time in a Rolling Stone reader's poll. According to The Biography Channel, Entwistle is considered by many to be the best rock bass guitarist that ever lived, and is considered to have done for the bass what Jimi Hendrix did for the guitar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Entwistle
Oh, I know of Entwistle's legacy : p Hes credited with creating what is modern day bass guitar playing. And I like him and all, I like how he actually treated the bass guitar like a real instrument, haha. But with that, being innovative and all, I would still give Armistead the edge : p Where the vast majority of bass guitar players take a rhythm/ support stance with music, ABSIV takes a melodic position with his bass guitar, not even just on his own solo work, but even with the bands he plays in.
Like with Pinback, if you were to watch them live, or look at their tabs, youd see that the vast majority is done on Armisteads bass guitar. He mixes rhythmic bass guitar playing with chord work and fills in the sound of his music with his own harmonies on his bass guitar. (Heres a 1 minute long video of him playing live)

On a technical standpoint, Entwistle is really awesome, and he also deserves credit for being an innovation for bass guitar playing. But on a song writing standpoint, I definitely throw my vote in for Armistead : p He may just be a small indie musician, but hes extremely talented.
