Though I wouldn't necessarily agree, I hear you, Stilly, and here's the link for all those who don't get the Unicorn/Candy Mountain/Kidney/Shun references...

Disclaimer...I wouldn't call the show 'good' or even 'worthwhile' in any way, but just posted so you would know. It gets worse as you go, and I found the latest episode (4) to be quite blasphemous. Just sayin'...

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

Haven't seen episode 4, but I'd have to say that the others are aren't worth the time. But now it's part of pop culture...

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

GRA, that is sort of where my brain was going initially, thinking about combinations of all these things. J

You’re right, one person’s Volvo may be another person’s unicorn. J At least I hope so.

My perspective comes less from what I want and more from what might be better for the other person, although I think at times they can be one and the same. While my life by no means requires a Porsche or a Maserati, some Volvos have had a little trouble negotiating the curves, and it hurts me to see them hit the wall or even become a little dinged up in the process.

For me, a Mustang is the best of both worlds. It’s a classic, but, when the situation calls for it, there’s a little extra rumble under the hood. And…well…I like a little rumble in my man now and again. ;) Just sayin… :o:p

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

Let's expand the topic of discussion.

1.Name some things that are definite relationship deal breakers.

2.Name some things that are simply petty things that you should work through.

My hypothesis is that unicorn hunters turn even petty things into deal breakers, because they just can't cave on their "standards". Train wreck-fanatics turn the deal breakers into petty things to work through.

Of course hypothesis are meant to be proven wrong.

;)

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

1) A turtle personality. When trouble comes walking by, she retracts into her shell. And of course, a lack of seeking God would be a problem.

2) Just about everything else. In the presence of true commitment, there is nothing else that can't be overcome.

According to your hypothesis, I guess I must be a train wreck fanatic. :) Unfortunately, all I have are two relationships to base any proof upon. Guess I'll just have to accept my inner trainwrecker.

;)

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

I didn't really know what I needed or wanted. The Lord showed me a promise of a man. Im waiting until He brings Him, and He feels I am ready. It's like my car. I secretly desired a Mercedes but didn't think I should have it. Next thing I know, the Lord delivers me a Mercedes, affordable, low payments. God's match for me, will be in the right timing and exactly what He believes I need. I briefly settled for a used broken down car of a relationship and God showed me what can happen to my spirituality and life when I settle for something God does not want for me. Although I know what you are saying, He only wants the best for us.

I wish I could post pictures of my car. hahahahha

Deal Breakers, bitter heart, always angry. Rude to everyone he meets, especially the Waitstaff at a restaurant. Completely disregards for others feelings and not understanding why certain things humiliates people. (Fortunately, I've never dated a man that was any of this. But can't say I've never fallen for a guy that was like the last part. Where was my brain at the time?) One who drinks alcohol. (For most people this is not a big deal, for me it is for personal reasons, and I would not want to force someone to give up something they might enjoy drinking.)

Things that need to be worked through. (Refuse to call them petty things, because some of this is not petty, just stuff that people deal with.) Depression,

Deal Breakers,

Things that need to be worked through. (Refuse to call them petty things, because some of this is not petty, just stuff that people deal with.)

Since the computer decided to post before I was even halfway finished, I added the rest below.
=======

(For most people this is not a big deal, for me it is for personal reasons, and I would not want to force someone to give up something they might enjoy drinking.) One who refuses to do anything. Lack of Manners (Also including this in the below list) A non-Christian

Things that need to be worked through or should not just walk away from. (Refuse to call them petty things, because some of this is not petty, just stuff that people deal with.) Depression, the past (sometimes one has to deal with the past, despite the fact they want to ignore it.) People who don't like to deal with problems. (Although, at some point, a person may have to change it into a deal breaker if the said bf/gf still refuses to face problems.) Stubbornness. (But then, I'm a stubborn person). Health problems, and I'm talking severe health problems that can one to become handicapped. A job loss, one whose not exactly well to do, but works hard. Lack of manners. (I'm not talking about etiquette, but of just general nicety. For example, if the person is not opening doors for others because he's just not generally aware of his situation, or was not raised that way, that should not be a deal breaker, but something to work through. However if he doesn't use manners out of a lack of respect for others, then this is where it becomes more of a deal breaker, as it could be a sign of how he treats others and how in the future he might treat you. But then, that just goes back to general rudeness as I mentioned in the above paragraph.)

I'm curious about what your responses to both of those are? I would hazard a guess that a lot of unicorn hunters and volvo hunters probably have more similarities than differences in terms of what their deal breakers are, and what they're comfortable with overlooking.

Personally, my own deal breakers for marriage are being with someone who is actively struggling with alcohol, drugs, gambling, is older than my father, is not a Christian, has no ambition (doesnt hold down a job or lacks altogether the desire to work and provide). I can talk to and be friendly to just about everyone, and some of my closest friends struggle with those things, but I'm not interested in marrying a man who does. I also have no interest in marrying someone who cheats, steals, is racist, is violent, or hates my family.

I think anything can be worked through if you seek God first, and if you are sincere in your desire to maintain your commitment. As far as petty characteristics...I would say more material things like bad credit, temporary unemployment, poor physical health etc can often be fixed if one is willing to put in the effort, and I admit that it bothers me more when someone doesn't even want to try.
I do try not to expect more out of someone than I'm willing to do myself, when it comes to romantic relationships..I know I have a strong personality can be incredibly self critical, but I love to see people trying to be their best selves and succeed and be healthy and grow, so that's mostly where my line of thinking comes from with dealbreakers.

Id love to hear what your thoughts are, though, stillwaters, it seems to be a topic that you reflect a lot about. What do you consider to be dealbreakers, and what do you consider to be petty things that can often be worked through?

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

DEAL BREAKERS... Smoking (other than occasional use of pipe or cigar), currently on psychotropic medication or history of, in counseling/therapy/A-non groups, doesn't know what "castle doctrine" is, is a wuss, fails to demonstrate "gentlemanly" courtesies either public or private, lacking self sufficiency skills...I am sure there are more but these are what I thought of when thinking about certain professing Christian men I wouldn't consent to.

Petty things... hmmm... what ever isn't a deal breaker but creates a degree of conflict would be a "petty" thing you work on.

Deal breakers.
1.Not a Christian.
2.Drug/alcohol/prescription drug/"recreational" drug addictions.
3.Pentecostal/charasmatic.

Deal breakers for me are not physical things. Emotional Imbalance, Neurotic outbursts, bi-sexuality, Anger, Hatred, Bitterness, Passive Aggressive Behavior, gossip, Bi-polar, BPD, OCD, Fibromyalgia, Lack of Self control, ridiculous irrational fears, shallow insecurity, greed, emotional invalidation, anxiety, impulsive spending, unforgiveness, and my biggest deal breaker is people who take themselves too seriously. (girls who are obsessed with horses too)

Things that can be worked through... Bad habits, Weight, Financial Dependency, drinking, smoking, poor study habits, television, diet, debt, fussy clothing, no cooking skills, no education, no assets to speak of, poor prayer habits, very little life inexperience, criminal record, no friends, no hobbies and no ministry.

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

Dealbreakers:

1. A difference of belief in fundamental ideals. This doesn't disqualify one from friendship, but if I'm going to raise children with someone, there has to be basic agreement on such things.

2. Sharp disagreements in personal taste. Obviously a lot of room for disagreement. That and my tastes are fairly eclectic and moldable. But hey, if you can't stand to hear my alternative rock collection, science fiction, or books in general, it would be better for you to stay away from me.

That's it, really. If I start with things like mental illness, drug addictions, theological beliefs, etc, I'll be writing long lists.

Amen..just amen.
A man to these women is a hay bailer.

I guess I don't mind that as much. My mothers side of the family were once avid horsemen. Some of them still are. Needless to say, that would take care of the famed mother barrier pretty fast.

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

Deal Breakers:

No faith in Jesus, Drug/alcohol dependency, "Dealing" with problems by walking away, Using one's fists to teach their woman a lesson, Being so set in your ways that you are unwilling to grow. (i.e. the woman is the one to do all the molding) I don't believe in trying to change a man, but a little give and take is going to happen from time to time, and how you deal with that is very telling.

In my opinion, everything else is work-throughable. As long as both parties are willing to work, it should be great!

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

1.Name some things that are definite relationship deal breakers.

Non-Christian, smoker (I have asthma and can't be around it at all), criminal activity, substance abuse (legal or illegal), cheating, stalking, spying, clinging, violent behaviors, temper issues, bad manners, negativity/whining, gossiping, addictive behaviors that haven't been dealt with, and/or trying to "train me" would be huge dealbreakers off the top of my head...

Yeah I can see someone trying to clicker train the redhead.

That hand would either be bitten off.
The clicker may get firmly implanted in someone's ear.
Or maybe both!

Re: Unicorn Hunters. Train-wreck fanatics. Volvo "settlers" - 3 Types Of Daters

Hmm... I'm curious what could be percieved as training.

If I show them how to clear their snorkel, so you don't get a lung full of seawater, is that training?

If I take them skiing and they conquer their fear of heights, is that training?
