Why are all my Seoul mates so far away.
I am a totally tactile and visual person, and though we might have different styles, the paper itself is CRUCIAL. I love all kinds of paper, but as much as I love the glossy finishes, they're not practical at all for holding written ink. My favorite papers have a texture and visible fibers that right through the pages.
Several years ago, I inherited a stack of incredibly unique paper--almost like a cross between onion skin, parchment, and old-fashioned typing paper--and I'd like to think it's still waiting for a very special recipient.
A friend of mine is part of a ministry that serves international students, and she needed someone to write up about 30 introductory "Welcome" notes to include in their care packages. She wanted them to be hand-written for a more personal touch.
I was glad to volunteer. I got a chance to use up some of my "special" papers, cut the edges with fancy scissors (the kind that makes the edges of paper look like lace), and buy some tiny "back-to-school" stickers designed to be miniature pencils, notebooks, backpacks, and even an apple for the teacher.
My friend's group serves students from some of the most influential families in their countries who are coming here to get high-level doctorate degrees.
Hopefully, they'll appreciate the humor of a "Welcome" note that looks like it was designed and written by an elementary school child.

Well it depends on the situation, but I think I like face to face best. Written forms of communication are good too because I can speak carefully and make sure I catch the more subtle facets of my conversation partners words. In that regard I like more words rather than less because you have more points from which to judge someones posture on the subject. Sometimes one sentence is not enough to understand a person's meaning.
So my main form of communication is face to face and if it's someone special we might have two conversations going at once both the plain words and the subtext of the conversation, though this is a rare bird to find and a bit dicey because you can never be certain if you're reading each other correctly. On the other hand it is so much fun to watch someone react to the subtext of a conversation when they fully understand what's being conveyed. In that regard I'll apologize because I can be and have been quite a bit dense on that with some of you. Of course the third level of this is that you make the subtext plain talk and there is no off limits conversation, but I've only crossed a few of these people in a lifetime.
If none of that works I might fall back to communicating through lack of eye contact and mumbled words. I find it really empowers others when you look at your feet and speak softly. Sometimes you have to let them know who's boss, and clearly it's not going to be you.

Ummm... Seoul, it's passenger pigeons that are extinct. Carrier pigeons are alive and well. At least in Canada.

With my work, I prefer e-mail because I can deal with it on my schedule, although for quick questions I'll use the phone. I also use Skype video chat with a certain person on regular occasions, mainly because of intervening distance.

Another reason I like handwritten letters - I have very nice penmanship. As much as I loathed many of the skills my Mother found it important to foster in me, I did learn to have very nice penmanship. I still get to use that skill too because I prefer to take handwritten notes during lectures and when I am jotting down my thoughts about a topic I want to talk about in my paper or whatnot.

Communication is essentially taking the thoughts in my head and putting them in a form that recreates the thoughts in the head of the person who receives them. For the most part I don't care what the form is, audio, text, short, long, whatever works to get the thought across.
I do seem to prefer more time for deeper topics. In chat, with light banter going on all around me, I can snap off comments on whatever the topic is at the time. For something more complex I like to take my time and sort out what I think, how I want to put that in words and how I plan for the words to be perceived by the person hearing or reading them. The more strongly I feel about the topic at hand, the longer I want to take to make sure what I think is conveyed as accurately as possible.
And that is why sometimes I will read a post or text at lunch break and then go back to work without replying. I'm thinking about it and I'll get back to you, probably that night.

the best way is face to face....however, that is not really possible in all scenarios....so I say whatever way I can that does not push my non technical side into mass confusion making me feel really old.
