assuming that the story of the rich man and poor lazarus is a parable does not change the reality that the story is expressing about the afterlife...

jesus' parables always used real life situations to teach a spiritual lesson...things that could actually have happened in the real world...

for example the prodigal son did not jump on a unicorn and fly back to his father...he went on foot...

jesus' parables describe realistic situations that can actually happen in real life...so to be consistent we have to conclude that jesus' story of the rich man and poor lazarus was giving an accurate description of what happens to the dead...
in that case trees can talk Juges9:8-15
One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’

9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’

10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’

11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’

12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’

13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’

14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’

15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!

So when the breath of life leaves, how can a soul remain in the grave if the soul no longer exist?

Psa 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
psalm 16:10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
talking only about faithful ones, and the soul still exists

Thats the thing about the word soul, and spirit. It has different shades of meaning. It is a fallacy to place only one meaning to these words. You have to look at all the verses in the Bible where these words are used to get a true sense and feel of what these words can mean.

If someone has a nice tan I assume they have been out in the sun. If someone believes in soul sleep I assume they have been in a cult. There are exceptions to every rule.
i half belive in soul sleep, jesus did say the wicked will only be burned at the end of the world, now maybe there is soul sleep, ormaybe there is a hades waiting place(like a prison) im open to either(and i wouldnt call SDA a cult)(and no, im not SDA)

when god breathed spirit into man he became a LIVING soul, that implies he had a non-living soul before, i belive the bodyis a shell, soul is you, and gods spirit is the thing thatgives the soul life

You cant define the word off of one verse. Look at all the verses where these words are used and notice the different shades of meanings and then come to a conclusion.

I agree that the body and soul are different. The Bible says Body + Breath of life = A Soul. The text does not say man was given a soul But, man became a soul. When a person dies it is the opposite
actually the bible says man became a -living- soul...

Yes I agree the Bible does say that, it does not say man was given a soul. Since man became a soul through God giving a body + the breath of life then do we still have a soul without either?

The text is clear " The dead do not know anything" You people are putting your own interpretation into it and are passing it off as truth.
the context in the same verses makes it clear that they are talking about the physical bodies of the dead in this world...not about the spirit or consciousness in the afterlife...

a doctrine based on the fallacy of equivocation is a false doctrine...

ill have to agreewith RBS on this one, the fact thhat it became a living soul implies there was an unconcious one before

in that case trees can talk Juges9:8-15

15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!
we are talking specifically about parables of jesus...other parable tellers in other places at other times might have had a different style...

so your mention of a parable by a different person about 1,200 years prior has no bearing on the subject of the realism of jesus' parables...

so there are no confusions: here is what i belive on soul sleep: the rightous are immideatly ressurected, but the heaven they go to is not the same as the one there will be after the world ends(new heaven) the wicked may go to a holding place of some kind, or they may be unconscious,i am open to either side on that, however the bible is clear that they are not burning right now, and that the heaven the dead are in now is not the heaven that will be made at the end of the world.

We are not as far off from each other in our views as you may think :)

(18) And he that killeth
a beast shall make it good; beast for beast.

Leviticus 26:16
(16) I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow
of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

All the words in
red are translated from the same word as soul. So then according to this what is the soul?

Soul in the New Testament, words highlighted in red

Matthew 10:28
(28) And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the
soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 10:39
(39) He that findeth his
life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Ephesians 6:6
(6) Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from
the heart;

Philippians 1:27
(27) Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one
mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

All the words in
red are translated from the same word as soul so then to put all of these verses together from both the OT and NT what is the soul?

Thats the thing about the word soul, and spirit. It has different shades of meaning. It is a fallacy to place only one meaning to these words. You have to look at all the verses in the Bible where these words are used to get a true sense and feel of what these words can mean.
yes that is very true...for example a verse commonly distorted by annihilationists is the one that says 'the soul that sins will die'...but when you actually study the passage in its context you see that the word 'soul' is being used in the sense of an individual...like when we say 'i will not tell a soul'...and you also see that the death it is talking about is an execution for civil crimes...the whole passage has nothing to do with the question of conscious existence after death...

well, the soul is the individual isnt it?the body is a shell, and thespirit gives the soul life,so, i guess you can say the individual that sins shall die, but that really means the same thing

By my logic you will notice in previous post's I said "not always" and there are "exceptions to the rule". Like Rachel said though...USUALLY false doctrines come in packs. I actually own a study Bible by a guy who believed in soul sleep.
