Here's three version that don't come close to saying that God exalts his word above his name.
Psalm 138:2 New International Version (NIV)
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple
and will praise your name
for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,
for you have so exalted your solemn decree
that it surpasses your fame.
Psalm 138:2 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
2 I will bow down toward Your holy temple
and give thanks to Your name
for Your constant love and truth.
You have exalted Your name
and Your promise above everything else.
Psalm 138:2 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
2 I will bow down toward Your holy temple
And give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your [
a]truth;
For You have magnified Your [
b]word [
c]according to all Your name.
Psalm 138:2 King James Version (KJV)
2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
This is the kind of subtle stuff that you're going to find from the newer translations. De-emphasis on the inerrant preserved word of God, the deity of Jesus Christ and emphasis on things that WE need to do instead of what Christ has done for us.
