Using our own understanding to study God's word would be like me using a piece of straw as a cane...doesn't hold up too well.
HAHHAHAH I literally laughed out loud...Yes, as the understanding of man has been darkened because of sin and our sin nature....Thank God we have the light of the word of God which enlightens our darkness and shows us where we stand and where we should go.....!

Ok whew I thought I might have been reading the wrong book. That's a huge relief because the book I am ready says Holy Bible on the spine. Does yours say that on the spine?
LOL

No, it says Accordance, a computer program. But I do also read some that say Holy Bible or Santa Biblia on the spine.

worse to use a reed:

"Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 20 Thou sayest (but they are but vain words), There is counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou hast rebelled against me? 21 Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him." 1 Kings 18

"5 Thus saith YHWH: Cursed is the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from YHWH. 6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited. 7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in YHWH, and whose trust is YHWH. 8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, that spreadeth out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when heat cometh, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit." Jer 17

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
And similarly: commit, trust, rest.

5 Commit thy way unto YHWH;
Trust also in him, and he will bring it to pass.
6 And he will make thy righteousness to go forth as the light,
And thy justice as the noonday.
7 Rest in Jehovah, and wait patiently for him:

Just some of the verses I read every morning. Amen!
Wonderful.
Is the Christian life rocket science?
It says "in His law he meditates day & night . . . prosper."

Such a simple thing so often forgotten.

For sure!

We so easily take a simple thing simply and make it hard and we can take a hard thing and simply make it simple.

For sure! How easily we take a simple thing and make it hard.
Yes, the whole counsel of God is glorious.

No doubt....to bad that many will pick and choose verses that eventually are taken out of context so as to support a view that collectively the bible does not set forth for sure.....ALL scripture is inspired and profitable for sure HAHA...here comes the rain and probably the satellite feed as well...mid Missouri storms today....makes me think of the rain falling on the just as well as the unjust!

No doubt, and often times we forget what the scriptures teach about not being removed from the simplicity that is found in Christ. Humanity constantly makes things harder, and or more complicated than what they really are for sure....!

P.S.:

Signs can operate differently in the OT and NT.
They can be efficacious, as in OT circumcision,
and inefficacious, as in NT baptism.

John says Jesus' miracles are signs, and he is using an entirely different meaning of the word
than is used in OT circumcision or the sacrifices, and in NT baptism.
Agree with this one as well.....a lot of people miss this nugget of truth fro sure......!

The thing about pick and choose is that no matter what verse you choose to choose all by itself, not just eventually, but almost immediately is taken out of context. Most people don't understand that when studying the Bible there are more than just the words we need to understand. Who it was written too, what type of writing is it, when it was written and by whom it was written. How many people know that many if not all of the Psalms were sung? OK now go try to sing Revelations lol. Context context context! One sentence in the Bible in context is most always defined by the other passages around it.

Exegesis..to draw out or explain...the act of interpreting or explaining the meanings of verses or passages of Scripture. (Do you do this correctly or incorrectly)

Pick and choose is totally in no way correct exegesis.

Matthew 16:18 "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

I guess Peter forgot his name. Where is the rock that Jesus showed Peter? And wow must be a huge rock cause its gonna be a giant building!

UM?!! I think this would be known as wrong exegesis. And totally taken out of context but pretty good example to show how quickly it can be done.

So what yinz think? Should we study properly or just pick and choose?

Oh without a doubt...line upon line, precept upon precept and a little here a little there........Taken in the whole for sure.....most people pick a subject and (hang) scriptures on it to the detriment of the scriptures!

No doubt about that......It is amazing how many think God inspired the word in English and then God contradicted himself when He said HOLY men of God spoke as they were moved by the H.S.<----God did not inspire Episcopal priests who teach baptismal regeneration and works for salvation to pen his word!

Yeah really sometimes "inspired" is used way to liberally. Now I do believe God still inspires people to write preach ect ect but not in the same sense as God's Word is inspired.

I noticed that the workers and soakers for salvation seem to have disappeared...good because the more heresy they post the more chances there are to make someone twofold the child of hell!

Yeah I know....he consistently spreads Cambellism for sure.....I have never seen anyone who twists and contradicts himself more than anyone that I have ever seen for sure.....

Works will never earn a ticket to heaven and God's kingdom as the work of Christ was and is sufficient and the simplistic message of...It pleased God thru the foolishness of preaching to SAVE them that BELIEVE is to difficult for people who trust into their own works for sure......!

The reason I had to put him on ignore was because of what "yelled" earlier. I got tired of him adding word to my posts that I never said. I got tired of him ignoring certain posts and I got tired of him taking my God's words out of context. Plain and simple he got me to the point where I was pissed off royally. Not really that easy to do with me.
