Matthew 7:22
On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?

What has always struck me with this verse is the audience to whom it is directed. Who but the signs and wonders crowd does (supposedly) these things ??? For goodness sakes....it couldn't be made any CLEARER !

Well if you finish the passage you will see who he is talking about, 'workers of iniquity''
Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

It would not be to reveal new truth but to confirm the truth we already have
You know, when you really think about it, weren't many of the prophets doing mostly that? I mean, it seems to me that most (not all) of the OT prophets messages could be boiled down to "Just follow the law and the Lord won't punish you according to what He ALSO said in the law!" Sure, you had cases where Samuel was telling Saul exactly what was going to happen to him as he went away, and of course the Messianic prophecies, but for the most part, many of the prophets were really just saying "Follow God's law! It's good for you!" Which ... it is!

In fact, thinking about the prophet Jeremiah, how is it unbiblical that God would not raise up a prophet to say "Turn away now. It may yet be that I will forestall divine judgement upon the nations." Even knowing that judgement would come to Israel, he still commissioned Jeremiah the prophet to warn His people.

When it comes to prophets existing in the present, my personal opinion is that *if* they're here at the moment, they're working in places where they're needed and directed by the Holy Spirit, and that done quietly, helping individuals and not nations. Beyond that, we know there have to be two prophets appearing in the future, as documented in Revelations. That much is certain, at least.

I agree with this post. I believe God's prophecys are in line with the Scripture. I believe most people doubt it because they are not used to it. Prophets may be a rare thing. So many churches don't have prophets. Because prophets are rare, people think of them as myths. I believe if someone is really seeking the Lord for the miraculous, they will find what they are looking for. In spite of all the threads in Christian Chat, alot of people believe in the miraculous. Don't let the doubt hinder you from your faith. Believe God and you will see the miraculous happen. God would pour out from Heaven is someone would believe.

Again......What were these workers of iniquity claiming to have done in Jesus' name ? Maybe Jesus didn't mean to say...... "many will say to me on that day....didn't we etc. etc." ?

Again He was speaking to sinners, not saints

Matt 7 23, I thought those who had no love nor compassion in their heart, they might have positioned themselves as such but God looks at the heart not outward appearance. My 2cents

that is because nations are no longer ruled by kings who can make decisions for the whole country and individuals might actually listen and turn from their sin and accept salvation through faith in the remission of their sin in the shed blood of Jesus Christ

It does not matter to me personally if a person believes that prophets exist or not. I am more concerned if they deny that the Holy Spirit still prophecies. if they try and limit how God can speak to His children.

then I might have issues, but I haven't seen anyone do that yet. so can I have some smore's and cookies even though I believe in the existence of prophets?

I would agree. Let us all do likewise in seeking our Father's heart in Christ thru faith...... and not towards any outward signs :)

Im still waiting for a comment on ..."impressions of the spirit" The great leader said was prophecy.
And how could that qualify you as a Prophet.

And still i was kinda hoping to hear more on the use or need of a Prophet...what purpose would he serve?

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hand on the sick, and they shall recover." Mark 16:17-18

If you back up a couple verses to vers 14 you will see that Jesus was actually talking to the 11(apostles) and rebuking them for having little faith. 14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.

After that, the apostles went out and preached the gospel. The Lord was working with them confirming His Word through accompanying signs. The "them" is referring to the apostles, therefore, there is no evidence that all believers can do what the apostles did.

Signs, and wonders are not for those who already believe. They are for the ones who do not believe in order to make them believe.

I dont believe there is a Christian who isnt annointed according to 1 john2:27 So in Wagners paper of laying on hands
to give out annointings is bogus. And alone that is overlording and xxxixix. But prophecy as it was intended to be
I do believe works in a way to be prompted by the Holyspirit to bring relevant scripture application to another. Happens
all the time. But that only makes you a member of the body, not a prophet.
