"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hand on the sick, and they shall recover." Mark 16:17-18

If you back up a couple verses to vers 14 you will see that Jesus was actually talking to the 11(apostles) and rebuking them for having little faith. 14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.

After that, the apostles went out and preached the gospel. The Lord was working with them confirming His Word through accompanying signs. The "them" is referring to the apostles, therefore, there is no evidence that all believers can do what the apostles did.

Signs, and wonders are not for those who already believe. They are for the ones who do not believe in order to make them believe.

Yes and there are very specific stories told in acts to see the fulfillment of it by the Apostles.

no signs and wonders do not make people believe or have true faith. if the person basis their faith on those signs and wonders or the person who does them then their faith is upon shifting sand and not the rock who is Christ.

Only the Holy Spirit does and only when they are brought into godly sorrow for their sinful state and repentance for their disobedience of their Divine Creator and His will for their lives and this world. then they through faith accept their forgiveness and divine pardon through the remission of sin through Jesus Christ death on the Cross.

Abiding the purpose of any child of God no matter the occupation, title or spiritual gifts or the lack thereof is to speak of Jesus and give testimony to His saving grace and tell people of the Gospel so they might be saved and be brought into a right relationship with God through Christ sacrifice for Their sins.

they first must realize they are sinners.

what was the purpose of the OT and NT prophets?

2 Peter 1
19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed,[a] which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God[c] spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

One sows, another waters, it's God who brings the increase. If we sow in strife, water in strife don't expect an increase, as good as planting a seed that's dead and watering it with poison. For me, these signs show follow those who believe, comes down to what you actually believe by it, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence not yet seen. Do you believe?? Jesus said believe, what's impossible for man is possible with God.

Jer 32:27 I am the Lord God of all flesh, is there anything too hard for me.

Yet He does according to His will not ours, it's not that He doesn't it's up to Him when He does if He so chooses

Does anyone here believe that prophets are all false? or do you believe that someone could prophesy? Do you believe that God still has prophets? or do you believe that God is all out of prophets? It seems sad to think that God has no more prophets. Why would he be without prophets? God is the same yesterday today and forever. If he wanted to prophesy, why wouldn't He. People always had doubt, but God still did the work.

It is amazing how people are not willing to try to understand where others are coming from, and suddenly condemn their views. If you want to try to encourange someone to believe differently, then it may be a good idea to at least give scriptures.

Also, I have seen where some have taken others posts and completely taken them out of context and distorted what they are really trying to say.

Also, all I did was make the thread. I pasted info from ONE website and therefore did not give myself credit for this opinion in the OP. None of you know whether or not I believe in modern day prophets or not. I just set the foundation for the discussion, and asked peoples views. ;)

So now, let's discuss the defintion of a PROPHET.

In religion, a prophet, from the Greek word προφήτης profitis meaning "foreteller", is an individual who is claimed to have been contacted by the supernatural or the divine, and serves as an intermediary with humanity, delivering this newfound knowledge from the supernatural entity to other people.

Another term for a prophet would be a seer, or fortuneteller. In Christianity the word most commonly used is PROPHET.
We all know there are TONE of "psychics" out there, and if you have to pay money to get your fortune told then it is bogus anyway.

Now. If God wants to call on someone and give them a message to go out and preach to a crowd then he will. After all he is God, and God will do what he wants. God answers prayers, and his presence is made to me everyday. Am I a prophet? No. Do I recieve "signs" from God that tell the future of our fates? No.

I also think that many today use the term "prophet" loosely. For example, we all know Jesus will come again. That has been prophecied, but someone saying that today ISN'T a prophet. That has already been told. All we know is he will come and none of us know the hour or the day this will happen. We all need to be ready when he does come though.

A perfect example of a false prophet in modern times was that genius that foretold that the rapture woudl happen this past May. Obviously he was wrong, but what did he do? Said he got the dates mixed up and now the rapture is to happen in October. Will the rapture happen then? Probably not, and if it does it certainly would not happen because HE said so. He was not speaking from God. He was just stupid.

Unfortunately, there are many false prophets in modern times. When I turn the TV on and see men "healing" people I seriously doubt their gifts. I see no humility in them and it looks to be nothing more than a scam. I am not saying God doesn't HEAL, but God doesn't have to work through people to heal others either.
When a man in a 2,000.-00 suit claims to be a prophet of God and lives in a huge mansion, and has thousands of "followers" he is nothing more than a theif in my eyes. People give this man money to support his extravagant lifestyle and it looks to me he is makig his reward in Earth, when a Christians reward is in Heaven.

Jesus wasn't wealthy. He had no throne on Earth, but his kingdom is in Heaven. Was Paul considered wealthy? I don't believe so. He certainly didn't use his abilities for his own gain, and that is where modern day prophets bother me. MAny frauds out there.

Also, like I have stated before in other threads. Certain signs, and gifts were given to men in the first century before the recorded bible was complete. Prophets were used because they did not have a bible. I totally believe that, but today we have the bible, and we have faith. We knoe Jesus will come. We know to be ready. Do we know this from a modern prophet telling us? No. We knoe this because of the bible.

Also, all these modern prophets need to be careful in what they teach. Do not add to the word of God; meaning the bible...

Revelation 22:18
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.

Beth, that is very good and it hits alot of areas in a practical way with good understanding. Keep building yourself up in the faith.

Matt 7 23, I thought those who had no love nor compassion in their heart, they might have positioned themselves as such but God looks at the heart not outward appearance. My 2cents
God also lays out some pretty clear guidelines about false prophets, alex.
He already told us the heart is deceitful and wicked above all things, who can know it?
now yes, a born again christian has a "new" heart, but would a new creature in Christ continue to pretend God is speaking through them?

that's what this thread is about.
trying to get people to stop doing this thing and plead for mercy.
shouldn't we do that?

if the person doesn't stop after the second admonition, then what since this is where we assemble?
and what about the newbie who thinks its kosher?

like, what i'm asking is do you think God chuckles at false prophets? what saith the scriptures?

It does not matter to me personally if a person believes that prophets exist or not. I am more concerned if they deny that the Holy Spirit still prophecies.
how would the Holy Spirit prophesy except through prophets, ananda? or rather, isn't that how He always did it?
no cessationist has ever remotely suggested God can't do whatever He pleases, whenever He pleases.
the question is razor sharp: is God sending prophets today?

what is His Plan and how has He chosen from the beginning to speak to men? has it always been the same way?

Why would there be for what purpose would the Prophet be?

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer.(NLT)
