Rachel,

So going on,Jesus very clearly in that passage tells them that that generation would be held responsible for all the shed of all the prophets from Abel on. So wouldn't that mean that if in Revelation John is referring to Rome,New York,Paris,London or some other city, that Jesus shifted the responsibility of the shed blood of the prophets to a gentile nation after telling the Pharisees that it was that generation (IE tied to Jerusalem) that would be held responsible? So the question would be why did He do that and not make it more clear if it was now a gentile city that He was talking about?
jesus specifically spoke of all the prophets from abel to zechariah...he said nothing about prophets after zechariah...he didn't even mention the greatest prophet john the baptist who had recently been executed...

when jesus says something so specific...it isn't for no reason...

And going on how do you reconciled these verses also? NT by the way

Matthew 23

36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.
37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.

Luke 11

47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.

Luke 13

33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!
34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[a]

1 Thessalonians 2

13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. 14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews 15 who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone
16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.[b]

Can you show me where God places the death of the prophets and Jesus on any gentile nation or city or is it squarely on someone else? And if no where else it's never mentioned that it was because of the gentiles how can one say that the city is something else other than Jerusalem?
the description of babylon in revelation says that the blood of 'all who have been slain on the earth' is found in babylon...

jesus mentions prophets and apostles being killed in jerusalem...but not -all who have been slain on the earth- which obviously is -not- restricted to jerusalem...

like i said...when the bible is specific...it isn't for no reason...

Boiled down it appears when one says it's not Jerusalem in Revelation,it comes across as if Jesus is contradicting Himself when He already made it very clear that it was Jerusalem that was responsible for the blood of all the prophets.
babylon is responsible not only for the blood of prophets but also for the blood of the apostles and -all- people slain on earth...

on the other hand jesus only says jerusalem is responsible for the blood of the prophets from abel to zechariah...

the only way to say babylon is jerusalem is by applying an equivocation hermeneutic where you ignore specifics and details as if the bible records them for no reason...

Taking it one step further can anyone find any other place in the NT that Jesus or the Apostles ever gave any hint that it was someone else other then Jerusalem? Did Jesus ever say that it was Rome,New York,Paris etc or was it every other time Jerusalem? How about Paul? Peter? James? So the question if they never say that it was someone else then how does one come to the conclusion that it's NOT JERUSALEM?
in the gospels jesus never speaks about babylon at all...nobody does...

you would think with everything jesus spoke against jerusalem that he might have thought to refer to them as 'babylon'...unless of course babylon is -something else entirely-

To try and make Heb 13v12 negate the fact that Rev 11v8 states that 'the city, the great one' is the place 'where also our Lord was crucified' is NOT Jerusalem is laughable to say the least.

If you ask anybody in the world where the Lord Jesus was crucified six and a half billion people, bar you, would say Jerusalem!

If you claim to be a bible student, at least act like one and stop twisting the Scriptures to fit your erroneous view!

I thought better of you!
how is it 'twisting the scriptures' to actually believe what the author of hebrews says about where jesus was crucified?

jesus was not crucified in jerusalem...he was crucified outside the city gate...in other words outside of jerusalem...

anyone who -actually believes the bible- cannot conclude that the 'great city' of revelation where jesus was crucified was jerusalem...

Sometimes splitting hairs that can't be split, makes things more difficult than needed.

Two major things I'm starting to look for in discussions on Bible are...

1. Are they splitting hairs that can't be split?
2. Are they blurring lines that can't be blurred?

People have a bad habit of drawing distinctions between things that aren't distinct.
People have a bad habit of blurring the distinctions between things that are distinct.
i wouldn't call the difference between being 'outside the city gate' and 'inside the city' a hair that can't be split...

especially since in the case of cities of refuge this was a difference between life and death...an 'avenger of blood' had legal right to kill his target even one step outside the city gate...

as for blurring the lines...i would say this hermeneutic that operates on the principle of 'close enough' is blurring lines... the bible is inerrant in all its details...when the details of one description don't line up with the details of another description...it is because -they aren't describing the same thing-...

no, no match - CONCERNING WHICH CITY GOD KEEPS TALKING ABOUT:rolleyes:

let's see...which CITY was did HE SAY He set "in the center of the nations, with countries all around her."
and which CITY did HE SAY would eventually be laid waste.

OR

Ezekiel 5:5
"This is what the Sovereign LORD says: This is Jerusalem, which I have set in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.

Revelation 17:1
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters

Revelation 17:15
Then the angel said to me, "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.

hmmm.....
you have to be -incredibly dishonest- to claim that 'who is seated on many waters [peoples multitudes nations and languages]' is a direct quotation of 'in the center of the nations with countries all around her'

i mean this is just brazen 'day is night and night is day' dishonesty...the kind of thing you get from someone with zero concern for truth...

here's one of israel's prophets (all the Apostles were clearly also prophets):

Acts 3
Peter Speaks in Solomon’s Portico

11While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s. 12And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk? 13The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servantb Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. 14But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. 16And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesusc has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.

17“And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. 19Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, 20that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, 21whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. 22Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. 23And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’ 24And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days. 25You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ 26God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”

okay..that's really clear.
Peter said all the prophets proclaimed those days - the very days Peter was living in.
look how many times he talks to Israel about their prophets.

"Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you. And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet shall be destroyed from the people.’ And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came after him, also proclaimed these days."

did this actually happen?
well, yes, it did.
the ones who did not listen and repent, were destroyed.
peter said all the prophets from Samuel all the way to Jesus the Last Prophet proclaimed THOSE days.
the days peter was in...warning them about what would happen if they didn't REPENT and be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.

and it did. didn't it?
how is it we skip over what God caused to pass?
this makes me scratch my head.

~

still just looking to see who Jesus said was responsible for the blood of the prophets.

unless we agree (and i don't) there's been a continuation of the office of prophet (Old and/or New) and prophets have been being killed in a particular modern city or mystical world city, who killed the prophets?

did any of the reformers persecuted by the Papacy claim to be prophets?

anyways.....

according to Jesus - whose prophets were they? to whom were they sent?

Matthew 21
The Parable of the Tenants

33“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country. 34When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servantsc to the tenants to get his fruit. 35And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36Again he sent other servants, more than the first. And they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39 And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”

is the above passage referring to anyone but the wicked chief priests; scribes and Pharisees; rulers and unbelievers of Israel?

no, of course not.
Jesus said he was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of israel.

He sheep knew Him, heard His voice and followed Him.
He said some did not hear Him, because the were not His sheep.
He also said he had other sheep (gentiles) that were not of that fold - Israel.
and He would bring them also.
and He did, and is:)

He did not travel anywhere but that region. He didn't go to the United nations or anywhere else.
no prophets have been killed by the UN; or NY cops; or as far as i know, the Papacy killed tons of people, but none of israel's prophets

(NOTE: disclaimer - the Papacy is antichrist...horrible awful antichrist....k? really bad horrible antichrist.....but there are many antichrists, and many instead-of christs (false christs))

Jesus clearly said above, the Father had sent many servants (prophets) to them, and they mistreated or killed them all. WHO DID?
(we already know Jesus referred to Himself as Prophet)
He was sent to Israel, that's where He walked and taught; and that's where He was killed.
some believed and some did not.

and they continued to persecute the faithful:

Acts 12
1Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church in order to mistreat them. 2And he had James the brother of John put to death with a sword

The Herods had made themselves kings of the Jews, and had supporters.

Acts 4
1And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

5On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”

8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11This Jesusa is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.b 12And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.

15But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.

17But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” 21And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

23When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,

“‘Why did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers were gathered together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed
’—

27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.

~

for truly in this city (Jerusalem)

there were gathered together (and the rulers were gathered together)

against

your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, (the Lord and against his Anointed)

both Herod and Pontius Pilate along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel (The kings of the earth.....and the rulers were gathered together)

[Rome & Herods; and their respective sympathizers and comrades]

to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.

~

“‘Why did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?

so, is it at least reasonable to say that the unfaithful Israelites, in Jerusalem, at that time, who conspired with the Romans......were committing adultery with the nations (gentiles/romans)?
jesus blames them for the deaths of the prophets...
revelation blames babylon for the deaths of -all who have been slain on the earth-...which is obviously -much- more than just the prophets...

clearly mystery babylon is something much bigger than jerusalem...though under their sloppy eisegetical equivocation hermeneutical rule of 'close enough' i guess some people would say 'all the prophets' and every single person killed throughout all history is pretty much the same thing...it's only a difference of a few billion people...

and no 'conspiring' is not the same as harlotry...numerous scripture passages make it clear that harlotry is a demeaning term for idolatry...

mystery babylon's primary guilt is -idolatry-...not plotting with the romans...

The sages of the Talmud see a direct link between themselves and the Pharisees, and historians generally consider Pharisaic Judaism to be the progenitor of Rabbinic Judaism, that is normative, mainstream Judaism after the destruction of the Second Temple.

All mainstream forms of Judaism today consider themselves heirs of Rabbinic Judaism and, ultimately, the Pharisees.

....

The Oral Torah comprises the legal and interpretative traditions that, according to tradition, were transmitted orally from Mount Sinai, and were not written in the Torah. According to Rabbinic Judaism, the oral Torah, oral Law, or oral tradition (Hebrew: תורה שבעל פה, Torah she-be-`al peh) was given by God orally to Moses in conjunction with the written Torah (Hebrew: תורה שבכתב, Torah she-bi-khtav), after which it was passed down orally through the ages.[1][2] Later to be codified and written in the Talmud (Hebrew :תַּלְמוּד ). While other cultures and Jewish groups maintained oral traditions, only the Rabbis gave ideological significance to the fact that they transmitted their tradition orally.[3]

....

maybe we haven't looked into why there was in such conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees.
something about traditions.
that came from BABYLON.
the babylonian talmud wasn't completed until around 400 years after john's time...john wouldn't have expected his readers to make the association between mystery babylon and a book that they wouldn't have known about because it -didn't yet exist-

and you call this kind of misinformed slop 'research'?

Luke 19:43
Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
41And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
number of times 'babylon' is mentioned in this passage...zero

this is a reach even within an equivocation hermeneutic...'jerusalem gets destroyed and mystery babylon gets destroyed therefore jerusalem is babylon'

well, this is getting boring.

2Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

now since certain dishonest people keep misrepresenting my position...here is what i actually believe about what 'mystery babylon' -really- is...

matthew 12:26..."If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?"

so it is established that satan has a spiritual kingdom...who belongs to that kingdom?

matthew 13:38..."and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one;"

now how do the sons of the evil one behave?

galatians 5:19-21..."Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

revelation 22:15..."Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying."

what generalities can we infer about the priorities of these children of satan?

we can say that they are worshippers of self and worshippers of the things of this world...in other words idolaters...or figuratively speaking...harlots...

and we can say that they despise God and their neighbors...where are some examples of people in the bible despising God and despising their neighbors?

despising God...exodus 5:2..."But Pharaoh said, 'Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.'"

where did pharaoh rule? egypt!

despising your neighbor...ezekiel 16:49-50..."Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy. Thus they were haughty and committed abominations before Me. Therefore I removed them when I saw it."

who is this selfish 'sister'? sodom!

and by the way...the rest of this chapter in ezekiel reveals that sodom is the sister of -jerusalem-...and you can't be your own sister so jerusalem cannot be sodom...

now we have accounted for the harlotry...and the references to sodom and egypt...

but what is the 'great city'?

jonah 1:2..."Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me."

guess what else nineveh was known for...

footnote to genesis 10:11..."Nineveh with its city squares"

city squares in the great city? sounds like the place in revelation 11 where the two witnesses were killed to me!

nineveh was the capital of a major international empire...the first such empire to affect israel directly...

so nineveh was the great city to jonah...and babylon was the name of the great city in john's vision...and babylon sat on seven hills which is something rome was famous for...

nineveh and babylon and rome...each one had its turn being 'capital of the world'...each one oppressed God's people...

so what is mystery babylon? mystery babylon is the pinnacle representation of satan's spiritual kingdom throughout history...in jonah's time it was nineveh...later it was babylon...still later it was rome...elements of mystery babylon have made inroads into the church in our time...which we can see in any church that preaches worship of self and worship of material gain...and eventually the final form of mystery babylon will be revealed as an apostate church dependent on an imperial state...

it makes perfect sense...especially considering that john's vantage point for most of revelation is in the -spiritual- realm...so that much of what he was seeing are representations of -spiritual- realities...babylon is no different...

it makes such good sense that it would be hard to understand why some people reject this fact...though it isn't actually hard to figure out because they make their reasons so obvious...

some people have struggled with fear of the future and satisfy an emotional need by believing that babylon and most of the rest of revelation are in the past...
and some people need God to hate the jews as much as they do and satisfy that emotional need by making jerusalem the ultimate object of God's wrath...

Mark 7:13
Followers of Tradition
1The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem,2and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders;4and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.)5The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?”

6And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,
BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.

7‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,
TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’

8“Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”

9He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.

oh. Jesus was well aware of the Oral Traditions that nullified the Word of God.
the people had returned to Jerusalem...from Babylon.
and the elders brought their Traditions.

the Oral Traditions LATER codified and written down.
as a parallel and false religion, competing with and in opposition to Christianity - filled with pagan and occult doctrines.

and nullifies the Word of God on nearly every page.

maybe time for a Talmud thread.
then people might understand the intense conflict between Jesus and those he called vipers.

and maybe we'll get some Talmudic apologists to step forward and defend it.

all the thrashing just to deny Jesus was crucified in Jerusalem because it was outside the gate.
'outside the gate' is outside the city by definition...you are just trying to blur the lines to make jerusalem fit a description that actually -rules out jerusalem-...

the only one 'thrashing' here is you...all because you need God to hate the jews as much as you do...so that maybe then you will be able to justify the murder in your heart...

Only way you are in Jerusalem is inside her gates jeremiah explains this also psalms and many other verses

Jeremiah 17:19 Thus said the LORD unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah come in,and by the which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem;

Psalms 122:1

King James Bible
Let Us Go to the Lord's House!
1{A Song of degrees of David.} I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.
2Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.
3Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:
4Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.
5For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.
6Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
7Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.
8For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.
9Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good.

Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together God bless :)
Revelation 11:8
Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city--which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt--where also their Lord was crucified.

could you please explain using this verse, according to any theory other than that this great city is Jerusalem - where the Lord was crucified?

where was He crucified? why is that added to this verse?
what great city?
thanks....
