I mean, has there ever been a time in history where christians ran around literally washing feet?
Hi Stunned,
Yes, the early church washed the feet of the saints. There was a widows list. My guess is that they helped these widows with day to day needs.
1 Timothy 5:9,10
A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man, having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.
Washing feet was the dirtiest job at the time. Or at least that's what I remember from one of our pastors teaching. So to wash feet was a humble job. Those who are proud and arrogant could never do this act of kindness.
Some word sandals and others were barefoot. So who knows what they may have stepped in during the day.
And Jesus used it as a sign.......if you want to be great in God's kingdom, learn to be the servant of all. Many here could learn something by washing others feet.
