Back to the OP for a moment, I have purchased two engagement rings, have popped the question twice, and have been married once. In both cases, I spent a lot of money, about a month's salary. My ex-wife was not a gold-digger when we got engaged, but she did have a ring "picked out", which I bought for her.
I tried to return the first ring; no luck as the store closed (how convenient!). So I sold it privately, for a third of what I paid. Having seen how much markup there is on diamonds at jewellery stores, I am disinclined to buy another, though I would very much like to get married again (someday....). Personally, I think expensive engagement rings are a scam, because love is not measured in dollars, and DeBeers has convinced many women that it is.
If and when, I would discuss the matter with my gf/fiancee. Hopefully she would see the ring for what it is: a token, the value of which is found in the real-life relationship, love, honesty, respect, commitment and integrity we share, not in the price tag or 4-C rating.
Okay, maybe I'm sounding a little cynical; my apologies.
Blessings,
Dino
