So this lady came in to have her taxes done today, and there was already a lot of confusion because she was Eastern European and she didn't always use the right English words for what she was trying to say, but more than that she acted pretty rude and entitled. If she were had actually been paying for our time, I would've understood, buuuut this is a free volunteer service. She kind of harassed me to a point where I was a bit flustered and having difficulty finding certain forms that I needed to find to enter in her information and said she might just leave at that point, and I was so hoping she would lol. But alas, she didn't. She was pretty condescending too, acting as though she could clearly tell that I was new at this.

Eventually my professor rescued me a bit. She wanted to claim some business expenses that she had no documentation for, and we can't just submit information that we don't know for sure is actually accurate, so he told her she would be better off filing on her own if she wanted to take those things, and so she finally left.

I have to think there's a reason why she acted that way other than sheer arrogance, but it doesn't really matter. I just want a nap now :p
You got to remember when dealing with the eastern bloc (I assume she is from a former soviet nation). over there they invented red tape. seriously getting anything done is a hassle, plus nobody likes to follow rules.

One of my big beefs about working with the public is how entitled so many people think they are. And, when asking for help, they always assume they know more than the person they're seeking to help them. I appreciate polite, patient customers because they're a rare breed these days.

Several years ago I went with some friends to serve in some soup kitchens, which was something I'd never done before. I was amazed, in a bad way, at how many of the patrons, who WERE RECEIVING A FREE MEAL, put up a fight at every turn. they complained because we had chicken and they wanted ribs. They complained because they wanted to be able to help themselves to everything (an extra this, an extra that) but because supplies are limited (it's a soup kitchen, not a freaking buffet, people!), everything was rationed to feed as many people as possible. They argued as if they were in a 4-star restaurant and expected to be waited on hand and foot.

My friends, who have worked with the homeless for many years, told me that's the secret behind many who are homeless--not all, of course, but many--believe they are too good to be working for anyone and won't take any kind of direction, which is why they don't have jobs, and of course, in turn, are homeless. I'm certainly not knocking anyone who has fallen to hard times, but I know for me, it was a life-changing experience. And I was in awe that my friends, after many years of seeing this, still serve every person with a genuine smile and a warm heart.

I live in an area now where panhandlers actually fight over the "good corners" and you often see the same people there everyday. I sometimes get to talk with a woman who works in local social services that regularly talks to and serves the homeless here and she said that many of the people they try to give care packages to refuse them--because they don't have the "right" kind of products or exactly what they wanted. She told me about one man who refused their help because they were giving out a free hygiene pack with a 3-blade razor... and he insisted that he only used 4-blade razors, and only a specific brand.

Sigh. I've come to believe that a good percentage of people's problems, including poverty, isn't so much a matter of money, but rather, pride.

Which is something I have to remind myself of as well because when my attitude turns south, I'm probably not very far from turning into the same thing.
I was walking to my car in a fast food parking lot today and this guy comes up to me begging for change and just before he came up, my phone started ringing and it was the hospital and so I was fumbling in my pocket trying to get it and answer it and the guy can see that I'm trying to answer my phone and still keeps on asking me for change so I say to him, "I'm busy." And to that he replies "I don't give a ####! Do you have a quarter?" Yea, he actually yelled that to me. I just kept walking and ignored him..

I was a little scared because he was much taller than me. I'm not sure if he was homeless though. His clothes weren't dirty or anything.

one time, when i was at a stop on the road, an older lady approached my passenger window. i cracked it open a little (cuz you never know), and she said she and her kids were hungry. "so in the name of Jesus, if you have anything you can give, i would appreciate it." i had just bought a burger, and the bag was sitting on the passenger seat. so i said it's all i had but would gladly give it to her. and she said no. she saw the bunch of half empty water bottles in my car and asked for one. i told her they had been there for a while, and i drank out of them. "it doesn't matter. i'm just thirsty."

i... don't understand why she rejected the burger but not the water.

Maybe she was a vegetarian?

In local news we found my dog today. Well, the family was over and Aunt Lucy found my dog. A few days ago I noticed the dog wouldn't come out of her house even for breakfast, and she didn't look very happy. She was a very old dog though, so perhaps arthritis. Next day she was gone, and today she was still gone. Aunt Lucy found her out at the edge of the woods where she lay down and died.

My other dog seems to not even notice the absence, and this dog lived a long and mostly peaceful life, but it still kinda hurts. Of course the other dog is an australian shepherd, so he'll be full of energy no matter what.

I'm thinking about getting a cat after the weather warms up a bit. It'll have to be an outdoor cat so it'll have to get used to winter, but I don't want to get a cat and leave it out there in midwinter. I'd rather get a cat when it warms up a bit and let it get used to winter as it comes up next year.

I saw a picture of a tattoo with an anchor and words next to it "I refuse to sink".

THAT IS WHAT AN ANCHOR DOES.

I'm really sorry to hear about your dog. I know it's not easy losing a pet.
