I loved attending to the children at the women's shelter where I had volunteered. Most of them were troubled inner city kids. I was raised in Philadelphia, PA so I could really relate to their fear and restlessness.
One day while I was serving lunch and laughing at the children's tables, a boy about 7 yrs old shouted out that I was "ghetto". I guess to someone else, that may sound like an insult. But when several other little ones yelled in agreement, "Yeah, she ghetto like us!" and rushed at me to get hugs, you can understand that it meant they truly connected with me.
I'll never forget that. ♥
