We can't have it both ways. There obviously has been a misinterpretation based on the way English translations had to word their translation of the original text. There were no words in English to accurately translate the full meaning of the original text; otherwise, these verses appear to contradict each other. It’s not possible to live forever in torment and also suffer a second death.
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28
There is no returning from the second death. Jesus Himself says we should fear God who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell, when the wicked are destroyed.
If the wicked are destroyed, both soul and body, in the lake of fire as Jesus says, they cannot be tormented for ever and ever.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal lifein Christ Jesusour Lord. Romans 6:23 (As in, you do not have eternal life except through Christ).
For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more. Psalms 37:10
But the wicked shallperish; Andthe enemies of the LORD, Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away. Psalm 37: 9-11, 20.
May sinners be consumedfrom the earth, Andthe wicked be no more.Bless the LORD, O my soul! Praise the LORD!Psalm 104:35.
For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up, Says the LORD of hosts, That will leave them neither root nor branch.
You shall trample the wicked, For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet On the day that I do this, Says the LORD of hosts.Malachi 4:1-3.
Behold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves From the power of the flame; It shall not be a coal to be warmed by, Nor a fire to sit before! Isaiah 47:14.
The LORD preserves all who love Him, But all the wicked He will destroy.Psalm 145:20.
The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. Ezekiel 18:4, 20.
For as you drank on my holy mountain, So shall all the nations drink continually; Yes, they shall drink, and swallow, And they shall be as though they had never been. Obadiah 1:15-16.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 2 Peter 3:10.
So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:36-43, 49-50.
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.1 John 5:11-12.
