Sometimes I think women can be a woman's worst enemy. Once a girl is rejected by her female peers, it is very difficult to get her back on track.

Unfortunately I've met plenty of Christian men who want an attractive woman, and or one who is slim. I feel totally inadequate to ever meet a man who can see me for who I am.

sassy lady no worries, there is a man out there who will see you for you and not your physical appearance. No woman should feel inadequate in the eyes of man. The kind of man that you should have is when you are on your worst days and your hair is a wreck and you look exhausted and he says your beautiful and you say I look like a train wreck and he says no that's not what I meant I mean YOU are beautiful:)

I think this thread and the heart behind it is awesome. I hate that women are constantly having the message communicated to them that they are not enough. Not skinny enough, pretty enough, smart enough, hard-working enough, etc. To every woman here, there is so much inherent beauty in you because you are a woman and because you were created by God. You really are precious, and you really are enough.

With that said--and I think I've posted this before--I think it's good to also be careful about hounding women for wearing makeup because they don't need it to look beautiful. While there may be some women who think that they are only beautiful with makeup on, I think a lot of women wear it simply to enhance their beauty or facial features, and that is completely okay. There is nothing wrong with a woman wanting to look and feel beautiful and doing hygienic things to feel more beautiful than she may potentially without it. That doesn't necessarily mean she thinks that she's ugly without it, but that it simply enhances the beauty God has given her. So I just try to be balanced in the way that I think about it.

I think I said this in another thread too, but I am trying to avoid Hollywood and advertising photos now, not because those women are somehow more beautiful than the ones I know, but because many of the pictures have been altered significantly to enhance the features of the woman in the picture and are downright fake. I would rather not have what I consider to be beautiful to be shaped by pictures that are unreal (in the most literal sense of the word). Plus, with pictures you only get a still, physical representation of a person and you get nothing about their soul or who they are as a person, and I don't want my standards of beauty to be limited to the physical realm either.

Little girl, fourteen
Flipping through a magazine
Says she wants to look that way
But her hair isn't straight
Her body isn't fake
And she's always felt overweight...

Just wanted to post this because it's pertinent, but mostly because it's really, really cool. Gets me emotional for sure.

So the online media is flooded with snippets of Victoria's Secret's failed "Perfect Body" campaign. I am so glad. It is high time we stand up against companies who tell us how we should look like. Here are two links related to the campaign -

Victoria's Secret Ends "Perfect Body" Campaign In Wake Of Backlash
The Perfect Body | Dear Kate

Here is another personal example. The dominant race in the southern part of India (where I live in) are Dravidian. They are characterised by a pronounced nasal ridge, wavy/curly hair and dark skin (dusky to dark). Guess which cosmetic is sold the most here? It is fairness creams. Every major cosmetic brand has a "Fairness cream" for the masses here. People believe that only fair people can achieve success in life. And it is disturbing to see that not only do people believe in it but they also teach this to their children. It gets passed down from generation to generation. Not only women, even men are pressured to become fairer. Here are some of the products -

It will come one day. It just takes one company to start it there.

I think some of these products are already being sold in Africa and parts of Southeast Asia.

There is a cream for everything in India - fairness, freckles, wrinkles, acnes, pimples, etc. Name it, you have it.

But that's besides the point. It's shameful that people are not confident about their bodies.

We allow ourselves to be overly influenced by society's standards of beauty. God made all kinds of hair, straight, curly, blonde, red, brown-God didn't make ugly hair. In the 60's we ironed it straight in the 80's we had puffy perms. God likes all skin tones, from pale to creamy, olive to ebony, bronze to freckles. The scriptures say it best though a meek and getle spirit is the most beautiful asset we can have.

Roh_Chris: Any ladies who are concerned about being too dark skinned should take a vacation in America. They'll have tons of men striking up conversations and flirting with them. Dusky-skinned guys would also have a lot of girls' attention.

Besides... making your skin white? Isn't that what a certain singer did? Look how he turned out. >.>

Here's the reality: $MONEY$ $MONEY$ $MONEY$

Corporations make billions of dollars off of anything they can sell you to make you think you'll be more acceptable. Makeup, cologne, hair products, cool cars, fashion, weight loss products, exercise equipment, etc., etc.

But first they have to make you feel you don't measure up. That way you'll happily hand over your hard-earned money to these greedy manufacturers.

The fact is, you ARE acceptable as you are. But if you know that, they won't make any money off of you. So the campaign is, "We have to make people feel like trash so we can get them to give us their money."

Yeah, but it's not THAT bad. We are talking about becoming fairer by a few skin-tones.

Yup, that's how it is in the Philippines too. My dad is over there right now and he was trying to buy sunscreen, but in shopping at 3 large shopping centers he could not find a single sunblock that did NOT include whitening agents. He was so frustrated when he told me about it. "Have you seen me? Whitening agents are NOT what I need" xD

It's interesting to me that in first-world countries, a healthy tan can sometimes signify wealth, because if you've got enough time on your hands to relax out in the sun instead of working indoors all day, you must be well off. Contrast that with third-world countries, where fair skin means you're fortunate enough not to have to labor out in the hot sun all day.
