Hey Everyone,

As a single person, do you do much decorating, baking, or preparation for the holidays?

Are there any traditions you love that you keep every year?

I used to love the holidays but a Series of Unfortunate Events kind of curbed my enthusiasm for many years. Last year was the first time I'd put out any decorations in a very long time. I had a set of chairs by my kitchen island that I draped in colorful, blinking lights (it was sort-of-a-tree but with less hassle) and I put a beloved colored glass Christmas ornament in the shape of Mickey Mouse on my lamp (I bought it on a special trip with my parents). Voila!! Beware the contagious holiday spirit!!

I have also been looking for a Nativity Scene that catches my eye--my Mom has a Precious Moments one that I just love but I'd like something a little different.

For many years, I also sent out as many as 60+ hand-written Christmas cards every year... because it's important to me to try to catch up on people's lives. (I think it's also a way of showing God's love to others... to let them know I'm thinking of them.) I'm going to have to cut back a bit this year because of time, but it's still something I love doing (though it takes several weeks.)

The most unique holiday tradition I've heard of in the past few years was from a Puerto Rican co-worker--she said that instead of setting out milk and cookies for Santa, her kids put out a tray of hay for the 3 Wise Men to feed their camels. I thought that was pretty neat!

How about you?

Do you go all out for Jesus's Birthday, or is your style more "Bah, Humbug!"?

For the past few years my style has "Bah, Humbug" but this year I am putting more effort into it. Also, next week is our first anniversary, also, 2 days before Christmas is my wife's birthday. It's going to be busy until the end of the year, that much is for sure. Yes, the birthday of Jesus will be part of this equation.

Please note that I am NOT at all advocating the celebration of Jesus's Birthday through mass commercialism and/or decorating.

All I'm really saying is... Even my church puts out decorations and celebrates with potlucks at which special foods are made... So I'd be interested in hearing what you do in your own life as well.

When my kids were young, we decorated the entire house like a tacky department store. LOL!! We had lights & decorations everywhere. We even had Christmas sweaters for the cats to wear. The local Christian radio station started playing Christmas music right after Thanksgiving so we'd have the radio on most times and sing along. We watched all the Christmas movies together like "It's A Wonderful Life" and "Scrooge" and "A Christmas Story". We went caroling at nursing homes. We made cookies & tarts & little loaves of bread for family & friends. We went sledding and played in the snow together with other families in the neighborhood. Also, there were plenty of Christmas light displays that we visited: the zoo, the mansion at one of the state parks, downtown, etc. Our kids played in the school orchestra so we went to all of their Christmas music performances. I could go on and on.

Now that my kids are grown and my grandsons live miles & miles away, I send gifts through the mail. Actually, I send gifts all year long. LOL! But I don't really get into decorating so much now although I still love to look at Christmas displays everywhere. I always loved lights & shiny things!!

This was always my family's favorite Christmas song. We would always sing it together! \:D/

I couldn't care less about Christmas decorations but my grandmother likes them so I put up the tree anyway. I couldn't care less about old Christmas carols because I have heard them too many times. Aside from that I love everything about the Christmas season. It provides so many excuses for my family to get together for family dinners, breakfast, etc.

I decorate - still have a school aged kid with me. I have a fake tree that I got when newly single and broke. It was on sale for a ridiculously low price. Now that I am better off financially, that tree has looked smaller and sadder each year. I looked really grand the first couple of years I had it though. It's funny how our perspectives change depending on what we have. I am kicking the idea of getting a real tree, but this fake one kind of keeps me humble - plus I don't have to deal with tree sap.

As far as holiday baking - I am doing a few "pracice runs" today - making more persimmon bars...tweaking the recipe again. The weekend of Thanksgiving will be a baking frenzy: persimmon bars, eggnog bread, white chocolate/cranberry/nut cookies, and Mexican Wedding Cakes. I'll make the rounds that weekend dropping them off at friends' places and visiting. Every other weekend until Christmas is booked with some sort of music gig: out of town Nutcracker performances, community band stuff, orchestra stuff, church cantata...

Between these and the baked goods... I totally know whose house to Christmas Crash this year.

(I was working Halloween and didn't do anything... so in order to make up for it, I think I need to go door-to-door with a pillowcase, demanding holiday baked goods from each house.)

Lights and nativity scene, although I kinda wish Christmas lights were holiday-neutral, because I really like having multi-coloured lights up

Where have YOU been, Still? :)

It's actually an addendum to an 8-part series.

You just missed it. :p
Oh busy not being Batman, not being the CIA, not being the FBI. Busy not doing a lot of things. Busy doing other things. :p

Yes.

Busy not reading my 8-part series, apparently. :p

Don't worry. Maybe I'll be like George Lucas and write a series of ridiculous prequels instead.

(Even more ridiculous than my regular writing, if that's possible.) ;)

The last few years l've told my daughter that she has to give away every toy from last year's Christmas that she doesn't play with anymore.
I tell her that she will be making some kid's holiday a little better.

It comes down to about 95% of them, and she's completely cool with it.
She's such a good kid.

I also tell her that she can't give away the Legos though........Daddy still plays with those.

My family does tamales every Christmas. In case you don't know what they are. They are made from a corn husk and we spread corn flour on it and put some type of meat (usually pork) inside. We fold them up and cook them. They are so good! I don't actually like Mexican food which is weird b/c I am Mexican myself, but I love tamales! :p;)

My mom, brother, and I usually travel to Dallas for Christmas to be with my grandma, aunts, uncle, and my cousins. Our family is small (9 altogether), so we're really close and we try to get together as often as possible. Everything starts on Christmas Eve. We usually play games like Hedbanz or Monopoly. This is also the time where we cook the tamales, bake cookies or cakes and anything else we have planned. Sometimes we bake Jesus a birthday cake. That's a fairly new tradition that we started a few years ago but it's so fun! We sing to him happy birthday.

They are Catholic so we usually attend midnight mass and it's very beautiful. This church is huge and they always have a large nativity scene at the front. They decorate nicely. They also sing Christmas songs during this mass. Even though I'm not Catholic myself, I really enjoy it!

Then we go back to my aunt's house and finish everything up. We send the kids to bed (my cousins) and we start bringing out the gifts and stocking stuffers. One time my younger cousin got up to use the bathroom and started peeking! Oh no! We sent him right back to bed! hehe

All nine of us spend the night together in my aunt's house. My other aunt has her own house but we usually sleep where the kids live. It's just easier that way. Finally we all go to bed and wake up by the kids' screams. They wait anxiously for us to all get up and brush our teeth to meet them in the living room. We have a rule in the family. No one opens a single present until all the family is present. As kids, we hated this rule because Aunt Mel takes forever to get up! LOL But now that I'm an adult I understand it, it's nice to see the kids' faces when they open up their gifts and a huge part of the Christmas joy is seeing that. So we wouldn't want anyone to miss it.

My other aunt (my cousins' mom) starts recording their reactions for home videos. So they open the gifts and after opening each one, the kid has to go give the giver of the gift a hug (if they are present). It's for respect to the elders of the family.

Finally we eat lunch together and continue the rest of the day watching movies...sometimes we'll go to the theater and watch something there.

Christmas is awesome and my family makes it even better. :D

As far as decorating goes...yeah we go all out. I'll try to post pictures of the decorations later.
