If you study the word of God on the bk:genesis2:18-24.Its very clear that the reason and purpose for a woman and i quote;genesis 2:18 ;the Lord God said,"its not good for the man to be alone I will make a helper suitable for him"..Also in the bk:1corinthians11:7-9 and i quote from verse 9:neither was a man created for woman but woman for man.Actually you dont need to agree with me or believe me because its not important but the word of God remain to be true no matter the ideology outside there because God is not democratic,He rules and reign and Hes King of kings and Lord of lords therefore we have to conform to his laws.If women take back their God given position ;the whole human race will be transformed to Gods will and likeness.Kindly share your views in relation to the word of God.

It was so that Adam would be able to fulfill God's purpose for him (starting the human race). But this doesn't extend to all men and women because there are many of us whom God works through without the need for a spouse at the time, or ever in some cases. Eve was created to serve God by means of serving Adam. Not all women are created to serve God in that way. And it is not always "not good" when a man is "alone."

God made woman because man needed someone to tell him when he is wrong.

As you stated, Genesis 2:18 works for me (plus I can walk away from this one unscathed :)).

I don't mean to attack you, but I think this question will open the sluice gates for a lot of woman-bashing.

This is how I look at it - God created a woman for the same reason for which He created a man. According to the NIV, in Genesis 1:26, God decides to create mankind so that they may rule over His creation on earth. Today, the word mankind refers to the human race, irrespective of gender. And God intended for man and woman to work together as a team that is committed to each other, in order to achieve this objective.

The fact that God created a woman to be a helpmeet for man has been misused to justify many acts like domestic violence, oppression of women, denial of the right to vote and govern, harassment, unequal remuneration, etc. since the ancient days. Jesus, when He was on earth, sought to set a precedent through many of His deeds. For instance, after His resurrection, He first appeared to the women. It was Mary who was given the first charge of preaching the Gospel and not the disciples. Nevertheless, when it comes to the dynamics within a family and within a couple's relationship, the man is given more authority than the woman. This does not mean that the woman is expected to kowtow to his whims and fancies; on the contrary, it puts greater onus on the man to behave in a way that is deserving of the woman's respect and adulation.

TL;DR - Woman was created for the same purpose of man - to rule over God's creation on earth. In a relationship or in a family, the man is the head over the woman, but this means that he must behave in a manner that is worthy of her respect.

Lynx, I hate to tell you this...

But I think you're wrong. :p
My wife fits this bill, and I DON'T mean that in a negative way. I can't tell you the times my wife has saved me, in a loving way, from doing something that was either dumb or, looking back, the Lord didn't want me to do.

Chris has this right!

There is a big translational bias with the word "helper" being used in Genesis 2:18. It makes it sound like man is in charge of dominion, and woman is just supposed to stay at home, and help keep a nice household where the man can rest after a hard day of caring for the earth and following God. (She is the man's assistant, wife, mother of his children, and manager of his home!) This leaves out up to 60% of women in the US, and millions worldwide, because these women are single and not married!

The use of the word "helper" or "helpmeet" has lead to the belief that God gave primary roles and responsibiliites to men, and secondary, supporting rules to women. This in turn, can lead to treating women as second class Christians.

In order to eliminate translational bias, the best thing is to compare the word in the Hebrew to the other places where the same word is used.

"Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him" Gen. 2:18 ESV

However, Hebrew says something quite different in the bolded words above in Gen. 2:18. First the word "fit" in this ESV version, which is sometimes translated "suitable" or in the KJV "(help)meet" is the word in Hebrew "kenegdo." This word indicates the woman is the man's match. Kenegdo suggests that what God creates for Adam will correspond to him. Thus the new creation (the woman) will be neither a superior nor an inferior, but an equal. The creation of this helper will form one-half of a polarity and will be to man as the South Pole is to the North Pole. The woman will be his strongest ally in pursing God's purposes and his first roadblock when he veers off course.

The word "helper" is the word "ezer" in Hebrew. It appears 21 times in the Old Testament, twice in Genesis for the woman, three times for nations to whom Israel appealed for military aide (Isa. 30:5, Ezek. 12:14, Daniel 11:34) and sixteen times for GOD as Israel's helper! (Exod. 18:4; Deut. 33:7, 26, 29; Psalm 20:2, 33:20, 70:5, 89:19, 115:9, 10,11; 121:1--2, 124:8, 146:5; Hosea 13:9)

This upgrades "ezer" from a mere "helper"to a "strong helper!" If you look up any of the other uses of the word "ezer" as listed above, you will find that ezer is consistently used in a military context. Israel seeks military aide from her neighbors. God is his people's "shield and defense," "better than chariots and horses", standing "sentry watch over his people."

Even in Eden, this word is used to denote that God's image bearers need to be on high alert and that fierce resistance lay ahead. Because a powerful enemy is plotting an attack.

So putting the facts about word useage together, ezer is best explained by the word, "warrior." God created his daughters to be ezer-warriors with our brothers. He deploys the ezer to break the man's aloneness by soldiering with the man wholeheartedly and at full strength for God's gracious kingdom. The man needs everything the woman brings to their global mission.

So sisters in Christ, who might be single, God has not left you out of his purposes and plans! Rejoice that God's mission is ongoing and we are all a vital part of that! The woman, like the man, is also God's creative masterpiece and a marvel to behold - for she is fearfully and wonderfully made!

I've heard that nearly 25% of all women here in the States are on some type of medication.

To me, that's so horrifying.

That's close to 75% of girls left untreated.

I expect to lose a few friends on this post. ;)

I remember Bill Cosby saying maybe she was called woman because when God made her He stepped back and looked at what he had made and said, "Whoa, man!"

On the flip side, someone suggested it was woe unto man...
