There has been a lot of scuttlebutt on cannabis/marijuana/weed over the years. I don't know a lot about it or the legal battle that has raged, but there has developed quite a dichotomy in U.S. culture over it - with one side stigmatizing it, and the other championing it.

So, question time!

  • What is your position on the "war" on marijuana? (Is it laudable? Is it pointless? Etc.)
  • Could you be romantically involved with someone that uses it, whether for recreation or for legitimate medical purpose(s)?
  • Would you befriend/fellowship with a person that uses it, whether for recreation or for legitimate medical purpose(s)?

Feel free to go beyond those questions if you have more to share. :)

Im not single but I did vote. Drugs in all forms are against what God wants for us. He wants us to have a clear and clean mind dedicated to Him. It is 100% against God's will for a Christian.

Okay, so we weren't talking about meth...

My feelings on this subject are extremely mixed. I don't think it should be used or legalized, but at the same time I wonder if legalizing won't help take out these cartels (you don't understand how remarkably evil these guys are unless you've had up close and personal experience).
Would I be romantically involved with someone using weed?

Befriend? Maybe, if I thought some good might come of it. Become bosom buddies? Unlikely.

Thanks kayla! No worries. I left this here in the Singles forum because of the traffic it gets, as well as the people that frequent it most.

OK my view on this is complicated and has a very rich history. I do not think it's good for abuse, I don't think it's good for younger people, I do think it can have medical benefits, and I do not think it should be illegal at all. I personally smoked it for most of my life, and really loved it way too much. It got me in trouble, had me doing very illegal things, and made me strait up lazy as a young man. As I grew up and my tolerance built I still smoked every day, but could and would work and function on it well enough. Then I got in a bad motorcycle accident that left my right arm function less and in constant pain. It was one of the few things that actually helped that pain, but it was already a huge part of my everyday life so that was by no means the "reason" I smoked. This actually led me to the Lord and salvation (the accident not the weed) and I still didn't feel that it was "bad" in a completely sinful type way. Honestly though I have now stopped using it at all, the Spirit led me away, so in that way I don't think "I" should do it, but I still don't see it as a real "bad" thing in that way. I definitely think it can be a stumbling block, and honestly for the most part don't think it brings many good things to ones life, but at the same time I don't feel I would judge others for it, and do think it has some medical uses.

- War on marijuana is good. Look at Holland. Even my nephews use it.

- no, did that twice, missionary dating, not a success

- well befriend, I would hang out with them to save them, but not all the time when there is no change

Great question, but it's one that's difficult to answer. The root of the problem here, really, is not whether or not governments are doing enough to tackle drug smuggling or whether schools are educating young people about the dangers of Marijuana use, etc. etc. The real problem is that the US and all other countries where this is a real issue are no longer Christian nations. I really believe it's as simple as that. So the first question was "is the war on drugs laudable or pointless?" - of course it's pointless; you cannot tell a morally relativist, hedonist society that something that they find pleasure in is wrong and deserves to be illegal. You can try to fight it, but if people want it, they'll get it. It's just prohibition for a new age. In saying that, of course I don't agree with making it legal, however I do believe it nonsensical in a country that is not expressly Christian.

I have friends that use marijuana, in the same way that I have friends that have premarital sex, lie, steal, and do all variety of sinful things. That doesn't mean that I condone their actions in any of these areas, and they are aware of my views.

I'd rather be on the road with a pot head than a drunk any day.

I've used marijuana before and I've been drunk before.

I would apply scripture about being intoxicated to weed the same way it's applied to alcohol. Drink but don't be drunk. Don't let it control you. Don't use it often. Mostly beneficial for medical use and not recreation.

I think legalizing it would remove much of the greater crimes involved in dealing it since it could be grown and cultivated locally and without having to break laws to acquire it.

Best practice is to avoid all drugs and alcohol altogether though (for some). IMO.

Edit: I think there are a plethora of FDA approved drugs, both over the counter and RX only that are more harmful than anything.

I did know a gal who used it for pain because she had bone cancer. She preferred pot over pills. There are certain circumstances where I personally dont have a problem with it. The thing is this: The actual number of cases where its really needed are few compared to the cases where it is used for recreational purposes. People like that "escape" and thats why they do it. Pharmekia.....God has told us hasnt he.................satan can get in your head when it isnt screwed on right:p

I smoke once in a while in the privacy of my home or a friend's home. Spiritually I'm okay with my very limited use of marijuana, but I take Kaylagrl's words very seriously, we are to stay focused on the Lord.

I grew up in the heyday of the "Just Say No to Drugs" and "This is Your Brain on Drugs" public service campaigns, so my automatic knee-jerk response is, "Drugs are bad, bad, bad!!!"

However, I have to wonder if the identity of who uses drugs has changed over time, kind of like tattoos. It used to be that only the "wrong" people got tattoos, but now even my pastors have them. When I was growing up, drugs were always associated with the "wrong" crowd, but the more I talk to people, the more it seems that all too often, the "average drug user" is someone just trying to get by from day to day with less pain, whether mental or physical.

I've always worked in environments where some of the employees are expected to do constant, heavy lifting all day, and most suffer from chronic, constant back pain. Many take drugs in order to alleviate their pain. One person I talked to even said that he could take street drugs for a fraction of the price of prescription drugs, so he would take street drugs to relieve his back pain and then sell his prescription drugs to others for a huge profit every month. This wasn't some "lowlife scum of the earth", this was just a regular, hard-working guy trying to support his family. In situations like this, I feel torn, especially when it's said that some of these drugs can relieve pain for cancer patients, etc.

Sometimes we treat animals better than people. When animals are in chronic, constant pain, we put them down. But with people, God didn't give us that choice, and living in constant pain every single day is miserable.

I've also found that Christians have a very wide and varied view of this topic. I've met many Christians who felt things like weed are "natural" and can't be wrong because "God made them". They feel that these substances are just as legit as prescription drugs, it's just that the government regulates what's legal and what isn't. After all, as described above, many people today (often senior citizens) are selling their prescription drugs for profit, and sometimes just to get by (just as with street drugs.) This brings us to the question of what should even be considered an "acceptable" drug or not.

I once went out a few times with a guy who smoked weed everyday. We went to an amusement park one day that was in another state, and I offered to drive. To tell you the truth, I was so naive at the time, I didn't even think about it. When we got home, it dawned on me that he had taken a stash with him and I could only imagine the trouble I would have gotten into since he was carrying it in my car (at the time, it wasn't legal in ANY state.) Several years later I also had a boyfriend whom I'm pretty sure was using drugs, but again, I was just too naive to really think about it until after the fact. I realized how much trouble I could have gotten into just by association and I will NEVER put myself in this situation again, at least if I can help it.

Sometimes someone will ask me what I think of someone they're interested in and will add, "Oh, he just smokes a little weed," and my automatic mental reaction is, "A little weed? How about a little jail time!" I do have a lot of compassion for the people who smoke it as daily pain relief. However, I'm still not comfortable with being around any of it personally. I had friends in college who were experimental drug users but they didn't do it around me. I'd leave their houses before "the party" really got started.

I can only become so close with people who use what I consider to be illicit drugs, or are using drugs in an illicit way (I wouldn't be comfortable with someone selling their prescriptions, either.) I might be friends with them in public social situations (work, groups, etc.) but I wouldn't hang out with them much on a one-to-one basis. There's too many other factors involved with the culture that I wouldn't want to be a part of, not to mention risking being put into prison just because of being around the wrong things at the wrong time.

There needs to be a poll choice for medicinal use only. I'd choose that one, probably. I haven't studied this extensively, so I am still kind of on the fence about it, as far as legalities go. I do know that it has medical benefits, so we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. But we do need to be careful in how it is used. I don't condone any use for recreational purposes. I've heard all the arguments... it's better than drinking, it kills your brain, it cures cancer, it causes accidents, it's used as a crutch, etc. I just finished browsing through countless articles on-line, half of which said crime and accidents in CO are down since it was legalized, and the other half saying they had skyrocketed.

I have a family member who is a pot smoker, and he's had more accidents and gotten into more trouble than anyone I've ever known. If you loan him your car for more than three days, he WILL wreck it. Maybe that's unrelated to marijuana use, but I have a hard time believing that.

I'd be interested to hear from Colorado residents on how they feel it's effected their local culture.

Not sure i get this mindset. It's acceptable, but only rarely? If it's ok to do, it's ok to do. In moderation, of course. How is it ok to do once in a while, but spiritually unhealthy to do it more often? Seems to me if it's wrong to do it once a week it's wrong to do once a month. If it's ok to do, it's ok to do. If it's not, it's not.
Kind of like saying i'm spiritually ok with having sex outside of marriage, long as it isn't too often.

I believe that it should be legal and freely available and should not be considered a criminal act. Personally, I have never used this product or any other type of drug. I used to drink but stopped that years ago. I would not hold this against anyone but would be uncomfortable to be around when someone fires one up.

I would not date someone who used drugs recreationally. Either illegal or prescription.
For medicinal purposes? I'd be pretty reluctant. Won't say 100% i wouldn't, but it would be really unlikely.

Yes,when I moved to the US I had lost a lot of family during that time in my life. I happened to talk to the doctor about it.I was still in grief and I guess depression. He went out and came back with a bag. As I looked inside I saw tons of Prozac. I put it in the garbage when I got home. Being a Canadian I was shocked. Just handed me a bag of drugs. So Im against that type of abuse of drugs also.
