Well, I have a dilema. I have my nieces wedding in July (2nd). Thats not the problem, the problem is my trusty old suit has seen better days, also it has gotten to be a bit tight... So, I have decided to buy a new one (probably, I'll wait till June), But I don't want to have to go to another size (why do all clothes seem to be in smaller sizes these days???).

I have been on a diet now for about 2 weeks, and the only thing I have lost is a couple of pound's (£'s) out of my pocket :(

Any suggestions for an easy diet....? that is still tastes good and easy to make lol.. I am looking to lose around 1 stone..oh ok maybe 2.

Stay away from processed foods and don't eat anything that grows in the ground(potatos, peanuts, onions, carrots, ect). Drink ALOT of water and eat 5 small meals a day. This really helped me when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes

1000 calorie diet but I always cheated with the counting of them
bread diet: one day eat what you always eat, next day only eat bread with cheese or something
Those are real old ones but they worked good.

Funny, I was expecting a thread entitled something like, "Here It Is... Dieters, What You Really Want!" :D Just kidding.

Now this is the million-dollar answer, and if we had the answer we'd all be thin (and rich, from selling our secrets to Jenny Craig and Oprah.)

The ladies have already posted some great advice here, but I wanted to add my story is because what works for me is often very opposite from what everyone else does or says. For instance:

1. I've always drank a lot of water, but found it interfered with my sleeping. Even if you stop drinking water 2 hours before bedtime like they recommend, your body has reserves it fills throughout the day and then releases at night. I actually had to cut back the amount of water I was drinking by about a third.

2. Almost every article will tell you to eat small meals throughout the day but that's never worked for me, because any time I eat, I'm tempted to overeat or misjudge how much I've consumed. For me, it's easier to cut my eating to 2 meals a day and 1 snack.

3. I eat a lot of things they tell you not to, such as potatoes. I dunno, I figure, if I'm going to die from eating potatoes, so be it. But a common meal for me might be a large sweet potato, 2 boiled eggs, broccoli, and a bowl of fruit. I work a lot, so things like this are just simple and quick. I've also cut way back on anything with plain flour (including bread, as the stuff here in the states is almost all white flour) and simple carbs like pasta and rice. It's a killer sacrifice, but it seems to help. I also eat very little prepackaged food or even "everyday" things that most people have, like tacos and pizza, because it's way too easy for me to eat an entire batch in a day. (The people who've met me here can vouch for the fact that I can eat... A LOT.) I do, however, allow myself a couple of weekly splurges and sweets are always my downfall.

4. Don't underestimate the power of exercise! While I'm the type of person who wants a cheeseburger immediately after a workout (I've learned to refrain!), exercise isn't a free-for-all license to eat, but it does help.

I've battled weight gain all my life and it's been really hard because most of the conventional advice just doesn't work for me, and it took me a long time to figure that out.

I've never lost huge amounts of weight but my only "proof" that these methods work for me is that, like everyone else, I've gone up and down a little (maybe 10 pounds), but for the most part, I've maintained my weight for about 22 years. Right now I'm actually 2 pounds lighter than when I was 20. I have clothes in my closet that are 10 years old and still fit, and some of my t-shirts have actually become a little loose, as I work out more now than when I was younger.

Even after the wedding, you might want to continue to experiment to find your own personalized routine.

Best wishes to you, and tell us how it goes!!!

You're looking to lose one or two stone? Are we talking this size

Tattooed-Martha-Ocean-Stone-Bath-Mat-4.jpg

or this size? :p

One way or the other I'm no help (other than being a smart alec). I've worn the same size pants for 33 years.

You're young. Hit the gym, but don't increase your food intake. The pounds will fall off.

If you're drinking Soda...stop doing that. I had a friend who I had seen a year and he wasn't even recognizable. Asked him how did he do it, he said he just stopped drinking soda. Either he was drinking ridiculous amounts prior, or soda is just that bad. So yeah, if you're drinking it, knock it off. Quidit.

Also fast from some of the stuff that's killing your progress. Fast until you're doing it less and less, it will kill any cravings and possibly put you on a schedule where you're not eating/drinking whatever it is as frequently.

The only way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you burn. It's really pretty simple, though definitely not very fun. Go to www.myfitnesspal.com, create an account, and start tracking what you eat. The phone app has a very handy bar scanner that allows you to scan packaged foods and automatically enters the nutritional information for you. The truth is that MOST people seriously underestimate the amount of calories they consume in a day.

Counting calories changed the way I look at food. I now view food as fuel for my body, and I am much more aware of what nutrients are in the foods I eat, and how important it is to choose wisely when "budgeting" my calories. Give it a try!

This is another piece of advice that's never worked for me, though for other people, it works like magic. Oh, how I wish.

I've been working out for 6 months, 2-4 times a week, 1-2 1/2 hours at a time (my typical routine is an hour on the treadmill, half an hour to an hour on the exercise bike, and then half an hour of weights), and haven't increased my food intake. If anything, I'm eating less, and have cut down restaurant/fried food to maybe twice a month (closer to once a month.) I've had a fairly healthy routine all my life, as well as regular activity (walking 30-60 minutes 4 times a week used to be my workout of choice, and I am constantly on the move at work, often carrying large stacks of boxes.)

And I've lost maybe 3 pounds on the scale. I've been like that my whole life. No matter how active I am, my weight doesn't drop much. When I was younger, I went on one of those diets where you substitute 2 shakes a day for meals and then eat one of the plan's prepackaged meal. After 4 months of adhering to their strict regimen, I hadn't lost anything significant and couldn't stand it anymore so I gave up. I tried numerous experiments over the years but nothing budged.

I can tell a difference in body composition and tone when I work out, but my size/shape has almost always been constant.

On the doctor's scales, I qualify as obese for my height (I've always weighed heavier than I look), but I wear a size 6, and the people at the CC meetup I went to last year thought I weighed about 30 pounds less than I actually do. Heh heh... one person even threatened to dead lift me on a scale in order to prove my weight.

I do think that some people have a body type or set point that can't be altered all that much, and I've just accepted that I'll never be a rail.

My dad loses weight so easily. He just stops eating sweets and pies for a month or two and the extra pounds are gone.
But he's vegetarian and my mom only cooks potatoes with vegetables and a piece of cheese. Morning and lunch: dry bread with cheese.
Check out the Dutch cuisine and you will be thin in no time. It is so uneatable you rather have bread.

It was so funny. Once went to the States. We asked someone where we could just buy normal bread and cheese because we couldn't find it anywhere. They only had cakes and doughnuts in the mall. He said: Bread and cheese? They eat that in prison here.
That war criminal for Yugoslavia was in a Dutch prison and he complained that it was inhuman torture, the meals he got hahahahahahaha.

Water, lots and lots of water. Drink a full 16 ounces first thing in the morning, then have a smoothie for nutrients. Then more water and before every meal a full 16 ounces, you will eat less and hydrate for all the exercise you should do to tone and get a healthy heart!!!! I can't wait for warmer weather to swim, its the best toning and exercise.

Hi phil,
Here i go again... i thot i knew what, how to say it but as i clicked on Reply... am translating things in my head again. Altho we grew up bilingual there are times its a quick composing a few lines/paragraphs, But someitmes the words just get entangled in Eng.and Filipino as we sometimes communicate w/ other filipinos and take longer to compose.

Here...Once i thot Paleo was the healthiest diet when i first heard abt it... then i saw an article ranking several (none of wc i really knew abt perhaps because i never thought weight gain an issue). Mediterranean also sounded pretty healthy, then i saw all the others and said, There is all those? Whatever they are, fads and not, Jeni's tip on water should be good, as well as taking many fresh fuits and veggies when u can. I wondered, why do ppl who claim to eat more raw, not highly processed or fresh foods not for 2 wks but months and yrs also recover from many ailments, and cancer specifically. Insted of packaged (and most often adulterated) juices, we hear they drink freshly squeezed citrus, coconut, aloe, etc and not just get well but also get to and maintain weight. They eat boiled sweet potato and saba (a cooking banana here), both just mildly sweet u can forego sweeteners, purple yam, not processed cereals for breakfast, so maybe that could help.

I have two suggestions for you, feel free to pick the one you like -

1) The GM diet is a quick-fix solution to shed those extra pounds to fit into a nice tux or gown. It is a 7-day diet program developed by General Motors for its employees. The GM diet, if coupled with regular exercises and consumption of 14-16 glasses of water everyday, can make you shed at least 10-12 lbs in a week. It is a common crash-diet followed by people in India, just before their wedding. There are some side effects to it - hair loss, fatigue and headache, but these side effects are primarily due to dehydration. As long as you drink copious amounts of water, you should be fine. Nevertheless, check with your personal nutritionist or personal doctor before you begin this program.

2) Given that you have 4 months to go, you can do it the regular way of maintaining a strict diet with 1 mini-cheat day and 6 days of exercise. The exercise schedule should be 3 days of weights + 500 calories burnt in cardio in 1 hour and 3 days of only cardio where you burn at least 1,500 calories. You will shed 1-2 lbs within a week, so over a period of 12 weeks, you will be able to achieve your target. As Elizabeth619 advised, your diet should consist of 5 small meals over the day, scheduled in such a way that you do not feel hungry - eat small portions, but keep your food intake steady. And avoid any kind of processed or fast-food. Here is an example diet -
Breakfast at 8 am - a bowl of oatmeal
10 am - a glass of juice or a few almonds
12pm - boiled veggies or grilled chicken
2pm - a banana
4pm - pre-workout meal consisting of 2 slices of whole wheat bread with peanut butter, then workout for 1-2 hours
6pm - protein shake (if you have one)
7pm - a light dinner

If you start exercising, your body will need some carbs which is why I have suggested a pre-workout meal consisting of whole wheat bread.

Due to my insulin resistance I do low carb (no breads, no sugar) it works for me. Just note.. if you don't make it a way of life you'll gain it all back quickly. I'm down 75 lbs in less than a year.
