Gr8grace I think, is on the right track to what taking the Lord's name in vain means.

I heard a Pastor say that if WE call ourselves by His Name (Christians), and act in a manner that is un-Christ-like, then WE are taking His Name in Vain, and seems to me to be a much greater offense than merely saying G.. D....
Very well said Sir.

he already has used my situation for my good, although I would love to live in a much more Christian place I am constantly being tested constantly having my skin thickened constantly having the choice to either express my feelings and my anger which is of course extremely tempting or show instead humbleness patience and love.

Believe me I have much to say and express to him I very much want to let my anger loose and let him have it but this is not the path I chose the path I chose is one of only the deepest love for God with God and for all others i don't care what the cost is what I have to go through what I have suffer lose or sacrifice when I became I christian I spoke my heart God and I made a promise to him that I was not after an ordinary love and relationship with him I swore I would be Love above all else no matter how far he and I have to go I am even willing to go so far as to burn in the very fires of hell itself for the sake of just one lost child no matter how dark or cold and evil their hearts no matter how blood stained their souls or what they have done the Love I am after will compel me to go that far for just one of them because I saw how far Jesus was willing to go for us and he would have done all of that a thousand times over for just one of us if he had to.

If this is the cost if this is what I have to go through for the Love I am after then I have it easy, the bond and Love I am after with him for him and for others is a dangerous one because it very well could cost me and I very well may have to suffer greatly and intensely and I very well may have to prove my words but I accepted the cost from the beginning.
You are in a very trying situation, but it is awesome to hear your testimony of love through your trial. God is giving your roommate a good example and a chance to see a true Christian. I pray for you and that your roommate will become saved. God is long suffering, not willing that any should perish. He is giving your roommate a chance and time, but eventually it is going to be his choice and God will bring you through this trial one way or another. If you continue as you are doing I am sure you are going to come through this trial like pure gold. Once again it is awesome to hear that you are living your life as an example and testimony of Jesus's love.

^Thanks for your input ,guys. Will ask my pastor about this.
Ask yourself one simple question......why does it surprise me when people sin against me or against God....is it because my expectations are too high?

Right after they say it I say: Plz forgive him/her Lord" It always prompts a reply from them like " What did you say? "
So then I explain that God will not hold them blameless. Then I say"Plz dont blaspheme my Lords name. It is offensive to me.

God has called us to be the light and the salt. We cannot be those things we are called to if we are silent and just blend in.
The same that tell you to just brush it off this and that are the same that will not spread the gospel to the lost. Its just pure cowardess and rebellion and disobedience towards the one they claim to serve.

Hi all,

Just wondering what you do when someone in your company uses our Lords name in vain or as a cuss word.
It has often shocked and surprised me to even hear professing christians doing this and it angers me profoundly that in one breath they call on His name for help and aid and in the next breath dishonour him by casually using His name as an expletive.

And then there is the issue of non believers who do this.I have one such person in my life who frequently desecrates His holy name when angry, surprised or shocked but because I am trying to win her over to Christ I am not sure how I can tell her that I find this highly offensive and view it as a personal injury especially since this is the Name by which I have been saved.

And why is it that when someone injures their thumb with a hammer names such as " Hare Krishna" ," Mohammed" or " Bhudda" are exempt from being a word of derision?

Anyway, I am looking for pointers on how to confront people on this terrible sin while maintaining the balance of being firm yet still being winsome and conveying love.
Thanks!
Hi! Yeah, I've had the same problem! With professing Christians, while it is not your place to change them, we should lovingly show others their faults. Lovingly point out to them James 3:10, and be prepared for ridicule or rejection.

With non believers, that isn't going to hold water with them. Instead of making them feel like you're judging them, or like you're trying to change them, simply state that you would prefer they didn't use that expression around you. Again, be prepared for ridicule or rejection. (And use common sense...don't do this to someone you pass on the street that you'll never see again, and don't bluntly bring it up with a co-worker when you're in a meeting with a whole bunch of people).

If they just don't hear you, remember that THEY are not your responsibility...if it gets too bad, maybe you need to find another job.

Yeah this was a bit harsh and uncalled for. I think Jesus can defend Himself just fine. I'll add another point, if I know the person is a self proclaiming Christian and using the Lords name in vane or cursing like a sailor then I will call them out on it. My father is real bad about cursing in front of my kid and he is a Christian. I call him out on it all the time.
I agree it was a bit harsh

When someone does something you don't like in your presence, you really only have the right to tell them once. After that you are just nagging.

I usually say sorry to God, they don't know Him or His Ways and Word and ask Him how I can introduce Him in their lives - which is more often than not - by the fruits of the spirit. I say something along the lines of I love you Lord, you're the greatest and I'm sorry, please let them know You like I do.

Because everyone, even unbeliever's, recognize consciously or unconsciously, that there is power in His name.

So when I was helping the appliance guy the other day with a double oven install by taking the doors off and the little spring loaded clip that holds the door on, snapped down on my finger and gashed it opened and I said the sh word and bled all down the front of a brand new appliance....I am ignorant unlearned and vulgar?

Depends who does it, where and why.
I can use some foul language myself when I get angry
but I do get upset when Christians i.e. in Christian forums use cruse words and defend themself by claiming it isn't a cruse word to themselves.

One or the other, or all three at the same time? Intelligent people can be vulgar. Ignorant and unlearned are closely the same thing. If they are ignorant or unlearned, then they didn't know any better. Glad its just your opinion instead of any factual evidence.

So if Sirk were to instead have said, "Good glory, praise Jesus, that hurt!" Is that proper application of the Lords name?

You could have substituted the S word with something different.. But you CHOSE to say the S word, instead of saying something like "ow ow ow that hurt".. So yes, that IS vulgar, unlearned and ignorant behavior. Especially when you tell others not to swear around your son, then you go and swear yourself. Irregardless of whether son was there or not..

People CAN control the words that come out of their mouths. Some just choose not to.. THAT IS factual, btw.. :)
