So disagreeing is going to war? Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Quit judging me! :D
Its not about changing people. I already said that. It is about letting people know that they will be judged. Sometimes they dont even realize how bad blasphemy is.
Ummm, was that facetious? Because you've been judging people left and right throughout this thread.

on thread topic, yes, it bothers me when people call on the Lord without actually intending to call on Him, but use His name flippantly.

i respond differently at different times, but i am never 'unbothered' by it.

i like to give the benefit of the doubt in the spirit of meekness, and assume that they really are calling on the name of the Lord -- so i may often shout "amen!" in response :)

I grew up like most American kids. Don't curse in front of grownups, but carefully study the words and use them properly in front of other kids. And there really is etiquette even around curse words.

But a side effect of that develops into habits as adults. What is called OMG today is proper etiquette for truly using the Lord's name in vain. So is "Lord, help us all" used in a traditional setting, simply we're not usually seeking God at all when we say either/or.

I am not a potty mouth, but I do curse, and I do take the Lord's name in vein at times. The cursing part isn't good simply because folks are eyeballing me in particular because they know I'm a believer. That works for me and against me sometimes. For me, because I don't curse much, so when I do curse everyone knows it's one of two reasons. I hurt myself badly or it's time to listen to me. Both times, I get people's attention. The second one makes people stop just long enough to think over what I just said. (Same reaction "dagnabit" gives me often, so I'll use that if I think that one will work fine at that moment. No one says that anymore, so people take the time to figure out I just said something oddball enough to make them pause. lol)

BUT taking the Lord's name in vin? Anymore, when I do say "Oh my God" or "Lord, help us all," I really have had enough time to think out my words and mean just that to God's glory. Because I don't use those words willy-nilly, it does have the effect you just described. So, thank you, because sometimes you're right in that assumption. AND, it tickles me pink when someone gives an Amen of agreement!

Ahhh, come on! She is trying. She's simply in the same boat I'm in -- sometimes we forget we are trying. It's hard to notice the mistakes when we start trying just because there is a lifetime of used-to-be-that bucking us.

Question for those absolutely opposed to both cussing and taking the Lord's name in vain. (And, honestly, every Christian knows the latter isn't good, but being truly convicted of that and then trying to change that comes along at different points in our paths.)

What do you do with in-lieu-of words?

In-lieu-of...
S - we say shoot, shite, sugar, sheesh, crap, poop, etc.
F - fork, fudge, Fernando, furgitbowit, mother, (and how Mom ever got in there, I don't know), etc.
Hell -- Heck, hades, H-E-double hockey sticks. (Only word that can be used as a real word or a curse word on this board. lol)
A -- donkey, jackass, schmuck, fool, idiot, etc.
The Lord's name in vain -- OMG, Oh my goodness, oh my, Yeesh, Geesh, the famous adding an H. in the middle of the full title of Jesus, (and actually adding an H. to the name makes it worse in my mind, and that's the one I do say when I royally screw up), etc.

Exactly what is that difference other than appeasing your mind or looking good in front of others? If the idea is to be more Christlike, how does in-lieu-of words make us more Christlike? Deep down, don't you realize all you've done is hide the impulse with lesser-than words?

Something I just never got because I find myself doing the same thing to appease those who would not want me to curse in front of them.

I wouldn't confuse correction with judging if I were you, no disagreeing is not going to war but how one responds decides if there is war or not, I notice sometimes you respond in a hateful tone and speak in a crude way to others.

You something that has always confused me is the word whore is used several times in the bible and I was raised that that is a cuss word but the word of God being holy would never cuss and so I am a little confused by this. Hell itself is not a bad word and is not taking the Lords name in vain and I suppose how one uses the word hell would be the deciding factor of if it's a curse word or not but again what grounds do we have that saying it in that way is a cuss word other than that is how we were raised to believe?

I am not defending the usage of that phrase I am simply wanting to understand

The bible says not to use lewd language or talk. It does not necessarily say not to cuss. But if your a person is telling crude nasty jokes, using nasty language, etc, I guess that would be considered sin. I don't think that the Lord just made a list of words that are to be blurted out on television. If anything "man" decided which words were innappropriate to use and which ones should be censored. However, if someone feels convicted not to say a cuss word, that is their business. My opinion is as long as the word is not lewd and nasty, it is ok. The word poop is not a cuss word. But other words that mean the same thing are. Now, is the word poop worse then the other word. I don't think so. But to each his own.

I never thought whore was a cuss word. It basically just means a woman that sells her body. I don't think they even bleep out the word whore in television.

There are certain scriptures in the bible that some people "interpret" to mean that it is not ok to cuss. I just think they should think more deeply about it and research it. For example, did they even have cuss words back then? If so what was considered a cuss word. If you ask me, I would guess that what was and wasn't considered a cuss word was probably invented long after those particular scriptures were written. My guess is that what is a cuss word and what isn't is more of a cultural thing and about having manners in certain sitautions, rather than a list of words that God banned from our mouths. I don't personally believe that God himself made a list of words that we can't use, that still exists today. Many of those words probably didn't even exist when those scriptures were written.
