and as long as you just write the problem out on one line, both answers are theoretically correct, as we don't know what belongs where. It wasn't meant to be written out the way the OP displays it, which is the entire point, you WILL get two potential answers.

this really is the point, and this applies to a lot more than just math.

in the Bible discussion forum -- and really everywhere we preach Christ, we should make every effort to be precise in the way we talk about Him, and be clear about the gospel, and glorifying God.

sometimes people say things - preachers and evangelists and everyone, no one is above others - that can me mis-interpreted to mean something very different from what they wanted to say, as different as 16 is from 1.

people can take a verse out of the scripture, and quote it, and make it sound like something is true that is absolutely not true -- there has to be context, and there has to be harmony with the rest of what's written. otherwise you get things like anyone who doesn't have the right haircut is going to hell, or we have to follow all the laws of the old testament, or the earth is flat and has 4 sharp corners, or if you don't speak in tongues you have no part with God, or if you haven't sold everything you own and given it all away, you're not saved, or Christians should be santa-clause, taking out loans to buy all kinds of things for whatever random stranger meets them and asks them for money, or it's a sin to hurt someone's feelings, so even if they're wrong or absolutely crazy you should never say so, or anyone who drinks a drop of alcohol is going to hell, or anyone who plays a musical instrument, or ... whatever.

people get into all these things and think the Bible is telling them so -- and they preach it and deceive people because they're not reading the Word clearly.

just like in math we can go very wrong if we don't follow the right precepts, and we don't say things very clearly, so it's the same with spiritual things. :)

I heard that the answer is 1 so this is my bad. I was only off by 15. My answer was reasonably close.

that's within margin of error lol

we could just say the answer is a non-negative number and be safe

I've heard it's 1 and that it's 16.

What's I've been contemplating a bit is: what kind of real-life situation would reflect the equation given?

I just got into some sort of argument with someone on Facebook because my answer to this statement:

Is 16.
And hers is 1.

What do you think?
I don't understand the notation. What is "2(2+2)"? Is "(2+2)" an exponent? I've never seen an exponent written that way, but then I haven't had a math class since 1973.

no, common notation is something written outside a parenthesis is meant to be multiplied by what's in the brackets. so

a(b+c) = a*(b+c) = a*b + a*c = ab + ac

the usual way to write an exponent in text, if you can't actually make an exponent, is using the ^ symbol ((shift+6, called an upper-carat))

like this --

x^3 = x cubed = x[SUP]3[/SUP]

most math programming languages ((that i know of)) accept this notation or something close to it to form exponents.

the answer to the problem as written is 16...

however that is dependent on how accurately the typing of the problem on this forum reflects the actual problem...

if the original problem was a fraction with 8 in the numerator and 2(2+2) in the denominator...then the answer would be 1...

Okay. The way I am used to displaying multiplication is with one of these: *. Therefore, I would have written: 2*(2+2). So the answer to the original equation (8/2(2+2)) is 1. Did she offer a monetary reward for solving this?

if we let
a = 8
b = 2
c = 2+2

then
8/2(2+2) = a/bc

now, does that look like it should be
