I woke up this morning and after reading a text message from a friend about a book he bought, i remembered that some 6 years ago I bought a book called the "Complete Works of Flavius Josephus" the first century historian. At the time I thought, "What a great buy!" Then I lent it to my then girlfriend. A while later we broke up. Then she left town and I thought "Bye bye good buy!"

What have you ended up parting with when you parted with someone you were dating?

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. But I did give it to her. Still, I miss it.

Nothing.

After marriage? Everything.

I understand completely. My first marriage was a total disaster. One weekend my ex asked if I could watch our dog for a couple days. I never gave the dog back. That was the only tangible thing that I was left with. I got the best of that deal.

I wasted years of both.
Even if you haven't wasted them, life can take a toll on you so that you feel even a decade older than you really are....I feel like that....even though I'm still young I feel like life in general has aged me to the point where I feel like I'm 40.....not physically but mentally/maturity wise...due to dealing with difficult situations...it's both a good and bad thing b/c you're more mature for your age but at the same time you don't have that youthful optimism about things that others your age often naively have....its both a blessing and a curse....

You can become jaded and cynical.

The shirt off my back.

Ha ha! I actually did give an ex a concert t shirt I had. I found it at a bargain store and thought it was neat. I'd wear it now and then and he loved it so much and when I'd wear it he'd constantly say how much he liked it and wished he had one. Finally I just said, here take it. I didn't take it off, I had just washed it or something. Just shut up and take the shirt, lol.

I lost the "cautious" attitude and became more "adventurous". I focused more on me and learned to live and enjoy life doing what I want.

This pertains to death, but I find it fitting for heartbreak as well...

As far as the time I've given that I didn't get back, the pieces of my heart left behind, etc...I'm in the "it's better to have loved and lost" camp...As devastating as it can be when things dont work out, I'm still grateful to have experienced my great loves and I quite like who I am growing into these days. I don't think there's anything I've given -tangible or otherwise- that I would like to take back.

It's funny you mention the book set Tintin...I recently acquired the entire Narnia series because someone anonymously left a whole set with a sticky note that said "free" in the lobby of my apartment...i think I only read the first two when I was younger, but planning on reading all of them after I finish my current reading (an alexander hamilton biography)...if you'd like I can ship it to you afterwards, I've no use for storing physical books, and I was just planning on donating it anyway

For some reason I'm reminded of an old country song:

"I'm going through the big D, and don't mean Dallas
I can't believe what the judge had to tell us
I got the jeep and she got the palace..."

In an ironic twist, Lynx's song reminds ME of a song:

"She Got the Goldmine;
I Got the Shaft." -- Jerry Reed

(And of course... it can go either way.)

I've always said that when my ex-husband left, he ripped out my soul and took it with him--and I've spent all these years trying to grow another one back.

Thanks be to God (and family, and good friends, including right here on CC), I think I'm almost there. :)

He always gave back what he borrowed. I did give him one of my many stuffed animal penguins as a "when you miss me" token. I wish I would have asked for it back lol.

Oh also... all the money I spent in our relationship -_-

The only 'thing' of value which my ex took was my kids. :\
