If a person can have the false belief that they are saved, which seems to be accepted by most here as correct.

How can anyone be sure of their own salvation?

Is this assurance necessary? Is the lack of this assurance a sign of unbelief? Is a unflinching answer of "yes I am 100% sure of my salvation" a virtue or a sign of arrogance?

God.
No.
No.

Forgiveness of sins and salvation are two separate occurrences.

We receive salvation because we believe that He forgave us on the cross and accept the free gift of resurrection by the Holy Spirit.

We were once dead, by the Holy Spirit we are alive. Saved from eternal death, into eternal life!
I see it this way, they are one and the same, as in they occur at the same time, We are saved because we are forgiven.

The penalty of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ

Once sin is forgiven, the penalty is removed.

I was trying to get people to see a point yesterday.

if we think salvation is just saving us from the power of sin, or from ourselves, then we really have no security, or knowledge that we are definitely saved, We may have a hope, but that hope would always be tied to the fact of how well are we doing as far as sin goes. Every time we commit a certain sin, or fall back and have a prodigal moment, we would have to question if we are even saved at all.. God was supposed to save me from the power of sin and myself. Yet here I am doing the things he was supposed to save me from

If he saved me from the penalty of sin, I not only can know I am saved, I will be encouraged and strengthened by words like those spoken by John, that I can KNOW I have eternal life, and by it continue to believe. even if I have a weak moment and do certain sin, or have a prodigal moment, because my security is in Christ, not my ability.

How can you have peace without assurance of salvation? Jesus promised peace that passes understanding but how could we attain peace without confidence in our eternal salvation?

I think you must look back to the moment you received Christ as your Savior. If you were really under conviction about your sin and the prospect of an eternity in the lake of fire was real enough to feel the heat and smell the smoke you could never rest if you were not certain you were saved.

Non' chalance is not a biblical attitude. Showing up at the White House without an appointment won't work you will not get in. Standing before the Great White Throne judgment is not the time to ask if you are saved you won't receive what you seek.

Prior to my conversion several years ago, I had absolutely no assurance of salvation, because I was trusting in works for salvation, being raised in the Roman Catholic church, which taught that assurance of salvation was the sin of presumption.

It was not until I placed my faith (belief, trust, reliance) in CHRIST ALONE for salvation that I knew without a doubt that I had become born again and was saved. Praise God! :)

1 John 5:11 - And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

Romans 8:16 - The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

Very good! Now, if you want to enter into total sanctification, denounce the chiefs and embrace the RAIDERS! :D

NEVER! LOL :D

Back in the 90's, I have a cousin who went to visit some family members in California and they surprised him with tickets to a Raiders/Chiefs game. He was very excited and wore a Chiefs shirt to the game. Big mistake! They were surrounded by a sea of rowdy Raiders fans and he was harassed throughout the first half of the game (they left at half time) because it had gotten out of control! He was booed by Raiders fans and hit with peanuts numerous times during the game and a drunk man wearing a skull mask with spikes on his shoulders got right in his face and said, "you are a long way from home boy!" That was the final straw and fearing for his safety, they left.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21)

For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees [i.e. Hypocrisy..saying but not doing], ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20)

Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3)

Yes, been there myself and saw this with the mules fans who came, not safe for opposing fans, and this is becoming a problem everywhere.

But does sincerely believing you are saved equal actual salvation? It seems this is what you are suggesting.

Many people have left cults confessing that they once sincerely believed they were destined for heaven. They were using the same reasoning as you are.
