You say that as soon as a person repents that he receives the Holy Spirit. I beg to differ with you because in the 8th chapter of the book of Acts they all believed and they were all baptized but no one had the Holy Ghost. Peter and John had to go down and pray for them and then they received the Holy Ghost. It seems that when you say that the scriptures are not understood by those who are natural and unconverted that you are talking about yourself.
That's because you are misinterpreting Acts 8. You have not made the distinction between receiving the Holy Spirit to the quickening unto eternal life and the filling of the Holy Spirit to labor in the Lords work.

Men cannot be saved by water baptism. Men can only be saved by the quickening of the Holy Spirit. John 20 show the Lord Himself breathing on those disciple the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost those same disciples received a filling of the Holy Spirit to do the work the Lord had for them.

Just how did you come to know the Lord? By baptism or by belief? By grace through faith apart from works? Did the Lord draw you by convicting you of your sin, His righteousness and the judgment of God upon sin?

Water has nothing to do with Holy Spirit baptism. Salvation has nothing to do with water baptism.

When a sinner repents and receives Christ as Savior he is Holy Spirit baptized and the Holy Spirit remains as a gift or a seal of his redemption.

Interesting that the scripture teaches that the things of the Holy Spirit are not understood by those who are natural and unconverted. I hope you are going to emerge from your confusion and fully comprehend the Holy Spirit in the conversion of sinners into Saints.

Roger, it was a yes or no question. Are you afraid to answer it? Here it is again.

Are you saying that Peter was commanding them to "Repent and be spirit baptized so that your sins will be forgiven and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit"?

If we want to know what is required for salvation, we must look at approved examples found in the Scriptures. The conversion account found in Acts 2, of the conversion of 3,000 Jews is the first record after the resurrection of our Lord.
(1) they heard the message, the gospel, the word of truth. (Acts 2: 37, 40)
(2) they believed. (Acts 2: 44, 41)
(3) they were pierced to the heart. (Acts 2: 37)
(4) they repented in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins. (Acts 2: 38; Luke 24: 47)
(5) they were baptized in water in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins. (Acts 2: 38)
(6) they called upon the name of the Lord. (Acts 2: 21)
(7) they received the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2: 38, 39)
(8) they were saved. Acts 2: 41, 47)

Does this tell us all we want to know about the way of salvation? Of course not. but it is a solid, approved beginning.
We can use this account to add information to it from other conversion accounts and other Scriptures. We are all saved in the same way, by the grace of God. (Acts 15: 11)
God bless.

(1) Jesus instructed His disciples to preach the gospel to all creation. (Mark 16: 15) We must hear to believe.
a. The gospel is God's power for salvation to all who believe (Rom. 1: 16) and obey (2 Thess. 1: 8)
b. Faith is received in conjunction with hearing the word of God. (Rom. 10: 14- 17)
c. Jesus did many signs that are not written in the book, but these are written that you might believe. (John 20: 31)

Roger, it was a yes or no question. Are you afraid to answer it? Here it is again.
Why are you unable to receive the word of God? Will Paul's words to the Corinthians help you?

1 Cor 1:14 ¶ I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
17 ¶ For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Ac 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The only baptism that remits sin is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. If you do not have the experience illustrated here in Acts 2:38 there is a real problem. Receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit is the baptism that remits sin. We are baptized into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit and we are never separated from Him again.

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

The promise of God is not in water but in the Holy Spirit.

Correct.... we have to read scripture as it was written, and put it in perspective of who it was written to...
I think it is at the culmination of what we were told to do. Believe and be baptized for the forgiveness of sin... Just like Jesus and Peter said.

Are we "saved" if we are not baptized? Why does that question even come up, unless someone is trying to wiggle out of doing what Jesus told us to do?

That is new age religion stuff.

....I don't think baptism is necessary, because I found a couple of scriptures that didn't mention baptism when talking about salvation".... What about the scriptures that say it IS necessary.... just toss them out?

Because those address another point. We then look for another scripture which addresses ...baptism...many are there.

Jesus taught baptism, for a reason. If we try to remove that, or render it as just some "simple sign", then we have told Jesus that we know better than him what we should do to be saved. I will not do that, nor will I teach it.

No amount of twisting and parsing and conjugating can take away from what Jesus and Peter SAID, and what all the apostles taught and practiced.
h...,

We must look at all scriptures having to do with ...baptism....not other topics not involving the target topic...baptism.

Yes The Bible says for us to repent...that has to do with repentance....nothing else.

The Bible says for us to ....maintain our righteous standing until the end...death. That doesn't speak to baptism.

Roger, again what are you so afraid of? Just answer the question. Its not a trick, I just want you to answer this simple question.

Is the baptism mentioned in 1st Cor. 1:14-17 also not water?

No Peter told them ALL to repent. He only told a select group to be baptised. (Those who recieved remission of sin)

How many times do you have to be told and shown this before it sinks in?

Acts 2:38 GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

38 Peter answered them, “All of you must turn to God and change the way you think and act, and each of you must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins will be forgiven. Then you will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift
Tell me eg, what in the above verse would make you think such a bizarre thing?

Just stop and think about it, why would Luke use such verbiage to present your understanding of the verse. You read the above verse and you think it means: Peter told them ALL to repent. He only told a select group to be baptised. (Those who recieved remission of sin).

Come on, be honest if you can. No one writes in such a convoluted way.

You can try baptising In Fanta, that might help?
That brand of soda pop was popular when I was growing up in Detroit. Not sure about whether being baptized in Fanta will work. Perhaps Perrier water. It's my beverage of choice. It's got a good mineral taste and is fizzy. When I was baptized as in infant the priest just sprinkled holy water on me. Not sure if he used Perrier. It could've been Dasani for all I know. I would never know the difference.

Your belief system is convoluted. Where did you go to find that translation?

So you give me another translation and think that proves you right?

The greek does NOT say what they english translation says, not even close.

Nice try, but no cigar.

Well how about:Acts 2:38 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

38 Peter said to them, “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Then God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

or maybe:

Acts 2:38 Good News Translation (GNT)

38 Peter said to them, “Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit.

or even:

Acts 2:38-39 J.B. Phillips New Testament (PHILLIPS)

38-39 Peter told them, “You must repent and every one of you must be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ, so that you may have your sins forgiven and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For this great promise is for you and your children—yes, and for all who are far away, for as many as the Lord our God shall call to himself!”

There more versions that translate it this way. But I have a better idea show me a version among the many translations of the Bible that reads "because of" in place of "for". If English is not your strong point, pick any Bible in any language you want.

I am curious to see Bible you read from.

Take preston's advice and stick with what the Bible states.

Does any Bible "say" what you think the Greek means? Any?

The greek says he told EVERYONE to repent and they will get the gift of the spirit

And he told those who repented to be Baptised on the basis that they had recieved the gift of the spirit.

then he said those who BELIEVED were baptised (proving this fact)

But we all know you feel you have to save yourself.. Go ahead man, Do not let us stop you/. Go to God and when he says why should he let you in, boast of all your works.

Me? I will boast int he work of Christ.
