Many carbs, like rice, pasta, and potatoes, turn into sugar in the bloodstream when broken down.

Now yes, some carbs are beneficial, especially when mixed with fiber.

But the way many carbs are prepared -- stripped of most of their nutrients and fiber -- makes blood sugar issues worse.

This is why many people aren't seeing the progress they're hoping for by only cutting out sugar in its most recognized forms, but not simple carbs in general.
Well that is why you are meant to eat veges with your meal.
I don't think anyone actually eats white rice by itself. Always have veges with it.

Hmm

Mean Girls was all about dieting it seems. I don't know why Regina was so obsessed with counting calories and foods. She actually wasn't overweight in the movie.

She didn't know that Kalteen bars made her gain weight, but the weight you saw in the movie was obviously just padding underneath her clothes.

It was always interesting to watch american movies set in schools where they had cafeterias. They even had food fights!

When I went to school there was never any school lunch, let alone a cafeteria.

You either bought your own or starved. There was a tuck shop though, or canteen but the food was just snack food or something hot like a pie. It was never actually a full meal. Most kids/students lived on sandwiches, packets or chips and an apple for lunch.

Sugary drinks were banned a few years ago, though I do remember one time there was a vending machine in the seniors common room, and one microwave. I remember we used to nuke apples in it. It didn't make them taste any better.

I do know people who eat plain rice as a snack (or rice cakes, rice cereal, rice crackers...)

And if someone with insulin sensitivity eats a mountain of white rice with only a sprinkle of veggies in comparison (which many do), it's not going to cancel out all the rice.

My family went to a Thai restaurant a few weeks ago and my Mom's meal was probably a 1/3 veggie-to-rice ratio. (Which is typical in restaurants because rice is much cheaper than anything else.)

And I know you're going to say, "Well, that's why people should cool at home."

But those with diabetes often have problems with even with the smallest amount of simple carbs, needing to eliminate the rice entirely and only eat the veggies (and only non-starchy veggies at that, because again, the starch turns into sugar once broken down.)

Mum would complain that I had too much veggies and not enough rice (I think she didn't want to waste the rice she cooked) but I always just would have one bowl and not want to have a mountain of it with my food. I'd never just eat a mouthful of rice by itself, or a bowl of plain rice with no accompaniement that would be like eating bread with no butter or a sandwich with no filling.

I mean if you were starving and had no other food, maybe, but thats not really how rice is meant to be eaten.

I think people who aren't Chinese don't understand that we take food very seriously (food is medicine) and there are certain unspoken rules about how its meant to be cooked and eaten.

But also the region my mum came from had fresh food all the time like you went out and got it everyday, for it to be as fresh as possible. Doctors and nutritionists even study the 'china diet' like they do the 'mediteranean diet' when really, its just the availabilty of fresh food that makes it healthy. Those who are blessed to live where food can be grown year round (ie. sometimes two crops of rice in one season, fruit that can be picked year round, food that doesn't have to be super processed and refined) will always be healthier and get all their vitamin and mineral requirements than those who don't.

The main reason Maori welcomed Europeans though was because they were starving and didn't have food that could grow here like potatoes and fruits like apples and peaches. They'd bought their taro and kumara from the islands but those can only be grown in hotter climates and couldn't be stored. They'd eat rotten corn (and grew to like it) and food they could catch and eat like fish, and eels. Anyway it is interesting how food can affect peoples lives. Like sugar came from the Brits and they enslaved millions of people to grow it for them in tropical countries just so they could have their cakes and desserts.

I call High Fructose Corn Syrup poison. Compared to HFCS sugar is a health food. Of course, if you're not comparing, one is best off avoiding sugar as much as possible. Your body will convert most of what you eat into sugar at some point, but that's different than just eating sugar.
yes well that just goes directly to your blood I would think, its very fast acting.

With sort of the starchier foods/carbs, at least the sugars/glucose in that are slower to release so you have more sustained energy than a direct hit.

Potatoes are probably the best carbs you can eat if you prepare them right and they have vitamins and minerals in therm as well, while refined flour does not. White sugar is empty calories, absolutely no vitamin or mineral content.

Salt we do need in small doses for taste and preserving food. But too much may give you a stroke.

Alcohol is probably the worst poison of them all, causes all sorts of health problems. Alcohol is just rotten sugar pretty much.

I mean fermented sugar, but basically it is the similar process as rotting food ie. decomposition.

But if you ARE going to cook ice cream...deep fry it in a wok!

Make sure you batter it first

There was a Chinese restaurant here called Green Island and we had something similar to that. It was like a big bumpy waffle but inside each bump was ice cream. It was sooooo good. There's also a Mexican dessert out here called fried ice cream where they dip it in some kind of syrup and they fry it real quick.

Oh. Boy. That. Looks. Good. (and fattening/bloating)

I would eat too much of that pretty quick. Imagine being able to make it? 😋
