Gift cards are always bad, because it's not a gift it's a way to say, 'I realised I don't really know you, so have this empty gesture'
Maybe a touch cynical :D but I got one of these cards for a day out doing something fun like skydiving of rock climbing etc...
Problem is the card was for £20 and the average day out was £150 less transportation, so my gift was actually an obligation to spend £130, am I wrong to find that kind of ridculous!
Maybe it's good if 8 people all get me one, but then it's 'only one card redeemable for one day out'

I feel your obligated pain.

My aunt gave me a gift card to this really expensive clothes store, the gift card was like 15 dollars. Im thinkin gee thanks i cant even afford the material it takes to make the clothes in that store WHY WOULD YOU GIVE ME A GIFT CARD TO THERE!!! but alas i pasted on one of these bad boys :D and said thaaaaanks

Snailracer's post reminded me that the Christmas I was pregnant with my son my husband asked my mom what she thought I would like for Christmas. I'd mentioned to her how concerned I was about getting back into shape after the baby was born and that I was thinking of getting an exercise bike or something I could use at home while I was with my son rather than trying to find time as a new mom to go to the gym or whatever. I had also mentioned to my husband that my keyboard was pretty banged up..*hint hint*...

So....one afternoon I was sitting on the couch looking at the Christmas tree...PREGNANT LADY HORMONES TOTALLY RAGING....and I looked at the gift he'd wrapped for me, which I had assumed was a keyboard (and was so proud of him for catching on)...and I thought....hmmmm...that's waaaaaay too big for a keyboard. So I started trying to guess what it might be and remembered what I'd told my mom...and started SOBBING uncontrollably. :) He called me from work while I was still crying and I didn't want to say why...but I finally asked him if it was an exercise bike. He was VERY quiet and asked...."Ummmm....why?"

Needless to say, the bike disappeared and was replaced by a new coat. :)

Guys...let this be a warning...NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER get your pregnant wife anything that might even remotely ..in her WILDEST imaginings...suggest that she is not the most gorgeous woman on the planet to you..ESPECIALLY EXERCISE EQUIPMENT!

REMEMBERING THIS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!

P.S. - He never asked my mom's advice re: gift giving again EVER :D

Hmm I think I might be the opposite. lol I wanted to exercise my whole pregnancy and was thrilled when a friend got me some home workout equipment and videos at 6 months prego. Hehe but I think that generally speaking most women aren't as weird as me and you men had better listen to Jullianna. ;)

 Why would you say something like this?

I taught dance and worked out the entire time I was pregnant. My mom and I simply didn't think it would be a good idea to take a newborn baby to a dance studio or gym....very germy places, so we discussed the bike.

I wanted the bike...I just didn't want my husband to think I needed one. Had it come from my mom, there wouldn't have been an issue. If I hadn't been hormonal, there probably wouldn't have been an issue. :) I'm glad some people got my post. :)

GABE: Thank you. Christmases are very different now, but it helps when I keep my focus on the Lord. It's all about HIM, not about me. It touches my heart that this occurred to you though. :) You are a blessing.

WYLER AND NOD: I totally agree about the card thing...so impersonal. The only time I give a gift card is if someone close to me has expressed a specific need that would involve them selecting a certain item personally.

Oh I totally didn't mean it like that! Lol I just meant I don't think I would have been sad, with my prego hormones raging, to get an exercise bike. Not that there was anything wrong with you at all. I'm so sorry if I sounded mean or anything. :( silly text cannot get across my tone! I love you lady! I'm sure you were a gorgeous prego.

And I was going to ask, do white elephant gifts count? Because a fish smacker is not really something I need at Christmas....or really ever I guess. Haha

Ok, I have to be the dumb one and ask the obvious question :D: what on earth is a fish smacker??!!! (And, when exactly, do you get to smack the fish???!!!)

The humorous thing is I always tell my family to get me gift cards to Home Depot or Walmart, they will always get used. My Mom has figured out that clothes are a bad idea usually, and I've figured out if I ask for something general, I'll get the wrong thing (I need a cordless drill and end up with a low quality homeowner grade instead of the professional grade that will last.) My interests tend to be very different from the rest of my family, soooo I can be difficult to buy for. However I do prefer to not give them.

And...I'm not exactly sure when. Maybe once you've got the fish in the boat or on land?

I agree with you in how empty this gesture would be, despite that, i almost buy a card last year, my mom is usually hard to please with a gift so i saw a card that included a massage and i thought that maybe would be perfect to her. :)

LOL!!! Thanks for the visual, Cat. I need a whole collection of those for some of the people I encounter... Let's see... "Prejudice Pounder", "Whacker for Whiny People", "Clueless Clubber", "Stupidity Smacker"... :D

And... *hangs her head in shame* I am totally guilty of giving gift cards and money--I never know exactly what to get, so I frequently hand out cards for people's favorite stores and restaurants. *Prepares to be whacked*

Well if it will save you a hassle, this year I'll just take the chocolate, see how some problems fix themselves! :p

Not mean...just critical and judgmental. I'll get over it.......maybe someday I can be perfect too.

I suppose some who have never had to face yet another Christmas without a spouse they loved more than life itself might not understand how deeply hurtful it is to have such a precious memory...something he and I had laughed about many, many times, tarnished by criticism and judgment. I would have thought this to be a safe place to share my heart............I was wrong.

God bless...Merry Christmas.

Thank you. I may seem tougher than most people for some reason, but I am not invincible...particularly where my husband and son are concern...particularly on one of the most difficult days of the year for us.

I will heal.

Jullianna, believe me i understand losing someone you love more than anything and diffucult days, especially days like today. Christmas. I dont think Catlynn meant any disrespect towards the memory you shared here in this thread though.

Thank you, Nod. I'm so very sorry for your losses as well. I have lost my parents, grandparents, a sibling and even an unborn child...but having someone who has been the other half of you for many years torn from you is indescribable, isn't it?

In recent weeks we have seen people injure single moms, unwed moms, older christians, non-virgins, those who've been sexually abused, those who have lost their families to divorce and so many other horrible situations in these forums with their careless words, all of which I would like to believe were also not intentional. There are times when I have read such things and have actually physically felt my stomach turn. When that happens, I tell myself that I'm never coming back here. And then I receive awesome emails from loving friends here thanking me for my threads, posts, prayers, encouragement, support, defenses, etc....and it truly blesses me. I so often feel out of place here and wonder why God wants me to be here, but for whatever reason, He does.

I've been praying for all of us all day today. If anything here causes someone to stop and consider the impact of their words at some point, it will be the good that comes from this, as we know God can bring good and growth from all things.
