That man has totally screwed up Paul's intentions and meaning in (Phil 1), as well as all the other passages he commented upon, just to prove a point about believers not going to heaven when they die. If you are getting your doctrine of understanding from this man, you are in heap load of trouble. I do not know what is wrong with you and him, but I do know that your understanding does not come from the word of life of our Saviiour and much rationalization has taken place through adding and taking away from the words and intent of the scriptures. Error is just that, taking away or adding to the words of this book and contriving an understanding that does not add virtue to our faith.

Even if something is symbolic represented in a parable, it still illustrates truth and that can not be dismissed or ignored. When something is to be understood literally and is made figurative or symbolic, and the meaning of truth changes by doing that, that is bad interpretation and you come to the wrong conclusions even when you compare it with other scriptures. You can't make a parable to mean anything you want it to mean nor can you ignore the truth that it is illustrating. Context is only part of it and believe you me, Jesus was not always in context when He gave an answer or teaching when certain individuals were around. You also can't take a parable and fabricate details through an illustration that violates the truth. A parable can make an emphasis by amplification but not by fabrication. The story must be relevant not just to the truth but in the truth for it it to be understood as truth.
The truth it is illustrating is in v31:
31) And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
The truth is that dead people are dead. They know nothing.
You are dictating your opinion as to what a parable can be. The pharisees Jesus was talking to believed as you do, that when people die they immediately went to heaven or hell. He was talking to them in concepts they could relate to. He was making the point that even though someone were raised from the dead, many would still not believe. He was right.
Our hope is in the return of Christ, when the dead will be raised and the living will be changed.
